Had the total joyeous failure of my H2 tonight.

Firstly all my gears stopped working. Was cruising at a steady 50mph then all of a sudden no power through transmission.

Managed to pull over much to the amusement to the rest of the rush hour traffic and stopped the car.

Then i switched the engine off.......

leading to problem number 2

It will not start...... The starter motor turns but refuses to engage.

Its got a new battery - no probs with power. In fact there was no voltage drop for the 2.5 hours with my hazards on it took for the recovery truck to turn up.

Now for the fatal words..... any ideas......

Sounds like maybe the starter solenoid as far as the starter goes. Just go under the truck and give the starter a few light taps. Then try starting it again. As far as the no power through tranny. Check your fluid level. Try smelling the dip stick if it smells burnt probably a band.

Could be ignition switch. Believe it or not. Do a search.

As it continues...............

Mechanic came out to scan it today. No fault codes at all. Engine and all gearboxes are clear. The starter is appartently working and turning the flywheel but nothing after that. He reckons the flywheel has come off the engine somehow therefore leading to my loss of transmission and starter not working.........

Sound plausible???

Sounds possible, but unheard of! Did you hear anything before you lost power? Has the flywheel ever been removed for any reason?

Any easy check would be to remove the starter and have a look at the flywheel.

Heard nothing when I lost power - one moment it was there then it wasn't.

As far as I know it has never had any problems with the gearbox/fly wheel but I am going to check it out.

Think it WAS a UFO stun ray.........

After further thought, it sounds like a torgue converter failure. Check your tranny fluid for signs of burning fluid. May not be a bad idea to drop the pan and look for metal.

Sounds possible but weird. Might be torque converter except for the whole deal with the starter and it not cranking the engine over. You can see the fly wheel clearly if you remove the shield from it. It is like a stamped steel piece that is held on by a few screws just remove it and take a peak. Good luck.

On the bright side Karma does strike.

I have a mate works on the radio - early evening show - who took the piss out of the fact i broke down live on air. - I did wonder about the number of drivers who flashed their headlights at me -

When he finished his show his motorbike failed to start and was promptly stranded.

The ring gear is attached to the torgue converter, hence if it fails, no spin on the engine!

well I have personally replaced flywheels on GM products that tore free of the crank bolts. had a couple that were broken but still functioning but with extreme weird noise. the older 2.8/3.1 were great for this. I'LL ask my buddy at the dealer if this has been an issue on more of the 6.0s.

Ok I thought the fly wheel was attached to the crank shaft and the torque converter was attached to the flywheel. So I thought the flywheel was a direct link between the starter and the crank and that the torque converter was the link between the tranny and the flywheel. My bad.

No you are correct. Only Chrysler used a ring gear on the torque converter with a flexplate to the crank. GM has never used a design that wasn't turning the crank first from the flexplate.

You're right on, my mistake:iagree:

Well its gone to get fixed. Asked them about it apparently they have had a load of escalades with this problem but no hummers. I am the first - typical - I was not even hammering it when it went, which is probably lucky. Find out tomorrow how much damage has been done.

2 problems......

1) The flywheel had come off but buggered the drive plate too

2) Parts are taking 10-14 days and I had to drive a Ford Fiesta on Sunday......:crying:

All I can say is thank god I did not take it into the main dealer. Last time I had a problem (a cat collapsed and was causing mis-fires due to the back pressure it) they charged me in excess of ?950 (about $1800) and took 3 weeks to get the parts in. :raar:

Wow that sucks, sorry to hear that, did they say why or how the flywheel came off?

Going to get a full report on it when I go pick it up. I was not even thrashing it at the time - was doing a steady 50mph - Though the previous day it had had a very fast run as I attempted to clear the outside lane of a motorway (see "Freeway", but smaller) but nothing that should have vaguely bothered it.

Just playing the waiting game now for the parts to come over then I can go and annoy BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport drivers again and my life will be complete. Also the school run is totally politically incorrect so will be doing that too!

and finally back on the road again. new drive plate, pump bush and seal.

One trouble of being in the UK is that parts take 2 weeks :raar:
