Frozen mirror

I have checked this subject in the "Find" and found that it was discussed once last year. Any new ideas this year? I need to force my PS mirror on very cold days and wonder if I am damaging it. I have tried the mirror heater before and have cycled it in and out as much as it would move but have to resort to manual to fully close or open it occasionally.

May as well take it to the dealer now,because
it will more then likely not cycle anymore.
If it is still working I'm suprised.

Mine do the same thing. They replaced one mirror and adjusted the other one. Now they both don't move when it's cold...again. It's going back to the dealership in the morning. After it sits in the garage overnight they work fine.

I did find those strings in my original search but felt the suggestions failed to find a solution. A pink hair dryer will not cut it. I have had the problem more than a dozen times and have forced it that many. It has always worked after and I wondered if there was an internal clutch that could be adjusted. Sounds like a hated trip to the dealer.

There is no adjustments for the mirrors at all.
There is however plastic gears inside that strip
when forced into certain positions.You've been
lucky.

I had this problem too. Try heatiing up the mirrors when they do not stick to remove any moisture from them. The mirror mechanism freezes easily.

I found this happened right after a long washing of my H2. It seems like a frozen lock issue we have all faced in our lives.

I would be surprised if the dealer did any more than I am suggesting. GM is the cheapest car company in the world.

Having the same problem myself. My H2 is only a month old, but after a slushy / snow mix that fell a few days ago followed by frigid temps the mirrors started acting up. The truck doesn't make it thru my garage doors without folding in the mirrors, so this is going to be a pain if I have to deal with it all winter.

I'll contact the dealer this week, if they do anything in particular for me I'll give you guys a heads up.

Just curious: If your door lock is frozen, do you schedule an appointment with the dealership?

Come on, this seems like a simple thing to me. I must be missing the real crux of the issue. So what if it is frozen. How often do you have to adjust your mirrors anyway?

If your windshield wipers are frozen in the morning do you call the dealership and complain?

Kenp ease up. If it were just the mirror adjustment, I could deal with it but we're talking about mirror folding. I fold my mirrors at least twice a day. When it's cold, it's a pain b/c it doesn't work. They could have engineered it for cold weather but I guess they didn't.

KenP, yes I am Canadian and we have cold weather, sometimes warmer than some northern states, but I don’t think it is too much to ask for a better design on an item expected to perform in all weather. A frozen key is an isolated incident but a mirror that freezes internally consistently is defective. I am glad my dealer agrees with me and not you and will replace mine at my convenience.

Guys, it would seem that water could very easily get in the arm joint and freeze, just as was posted by H2M&W above. As a matter of fact, he likened it to a frozen lock, just as I did.

You know they can't engineer out everything mother nature's capable of throwing at us. In aviation, you take many precautions such as engine preheat, deice, etc. Folding mirrors are not something we find on the run-of-the-mill turd box so we just need to understand the short comings and take precautions. Let your mirrors thaw and dry out and then liberally spray silicone all around the part where it pivots and back behind the glass.

Silicone disperses water and is a good lubricant and makes it more difficult for the ice to adhere once frozen. This also works for your door locks, door gaskets or anything else where you can spray and frozen water is a problem.

I remember it was the only way to keep a distributor cap from fouling up on an old jeep. Everytime it would rain heavy or I would take it out in the mud or through water, it would start missing. Silicone spray under the cap solved that problem.

PIAA also makes a set of silicone blades.

Just a quick update. The dealer is willing to change my PS mirror at anytime. This is the only one that causes any problems and of course, the one hardest to live with (I don’t have a 6’ arm). My concern is that with the number of times I’ve had to manually fold it, I am worried about gear damage. I have thawed it again, lubed it with WD-40 and saturated it with silicone spray. It seems to still operate as well as new. My wipers have been changed to Teflon and I have met very few people that still use a key to unlock their vehicle, so if mine every freezes, I would not know. Today is –22 Celsius and keeping my ass from freezing is my biggest concern. Seat warmers on high.
