it is a dual filament bulb. that is why one circut works and other does not. To change them first lift the tail gate and you will see two torque screws on the insde door jam of each light housing. remove these screws and then you can see the door side of the light housing can gently be pulled forward about an inch or so. after you gently pull forward, you want to try and slide the light housing towards the inside (aka, towards the door or lift gate.) after you slide towards the inside you will feel the entire light housing come loose. Just pull forward and twist the bulb socket and pull out. replace bulb and reverse process. all the bulbs in the rear are 3157 bulbs. Hope this helps. If you need any more help or need some photos or something just let me know.
Thanks

#1 open tail gate
#2 remove 2 screws
#3 pull tail light assembly out
#4 twist lamp holder counter clock wise
#5 remove bad bulb
#6 install new bulb, wipe off oil from fingers
#7 install bulb holders back into taillight
#8 put taillight back on truck
#9 reinstall screws
#10 check bulbs
#11 close tail gate

... slide the light housing towards the inside (aka, towards the door or lift gate.)...Crucial bit. The light housing clips onto the outer edge of the body panel.

You did not tell us you had the
optional lights in the bumper.
Hell the last time you were on here you were selling
your older Hummer with the Carbon Dash and buying an
08.
So what do you have now?

If in bumper it is most likely an aftermarket setup.
Some came with brake and turn signal but, sum were just turn signal.
Depending on how the person wired it to harness below he could have had both, only turn or brake only.

Um, reach up from underneath, rotate bulb socket and remove. Likely the socket is all corroded and will need to be replaced as well.

HUMTECH you might have to draw a picture of that extremely technical procedure for MonsterMatt to understand, for he is a Mongoloid:D
