In Miami, Spanish becoming primary language

MIAMI - Melissa Green's mother spoke Spanish, but she never learned — her father forbid it. Today, that's a frequent problem in this city where the English-speaking population is outnumbered.
The 49-year-old flower shop owner and Miami native said her inability to speak "espanol" makes it difficult to conduct business, seek help at stores and even ask directions. She finds it "frustrating."
"It makes it hard for some people to find a job because they don't speak Spanish, and I don't think that it is right," said Green, who sometimes calls a Spanish-speaking friend to translate for customers who don't speak English.
"Sometimes I think they should learn it," she said.

In many areas of Miami, Spanish has become the predominant language, replacing English in everyday life. Anyone from Latin America could feel at home on the streets, without having to pronounce a single word in English.
In stores, shopkeepers wait on their clients in Spanish. Universities offer programs for Spanish speakers. And in supermarkets, banks, restaurants — even at the post office and government offices — information is given and assistance is offered in Spanish. In Miami, doctors and nurses speak Spanish with their patients and a large portion of advertising is in Spanish. Daily newspapers and radio and television stations cater to the Hispanic public.
‘The Anglo population is leaving’
But this situation, so pleasing to Latin American immigrants, makes some English speakers feel marginalized. In the 1950s, it's estimated that more than 80 percent of Miami-Dade County residents were non-Hispanic whites. But in 2006, the Census Bureau estimates that number was only 18.5 percent, and in 2015 it is forecast to be 14 percent. Hispanics now make up about 60 percent.
"The Anglo population is leaving," said Juan Clark, a sociology professor at Miami Dade College. "One of the reactions is to emigrate toward the north. They resent the fact that (an American) has to learn Spanish in order to have advantages to work. If one doesn't speak Spanish, it's a disadvantage."
According to the Census, 58.5 percent of the county's 2.4 million residents speak Spanish — and half of those say they don't speak English well. English-only speakers make up 27.2 percent of the county's residents.
In the mainly Cuban city of Hialeah and in the Miami neighborhood of Little Havana, 94 percent of residents identified themselves as Hispanic.
Andrew Lynch, an expert on linguistics and bilingualism at the University of Miami, said that the presence of Spanish-speakers first became an issue in Miami-Dade County in the 1960s and '70s with the arrival of Cuban immigrants and intensified in the '80s with immigrants from not just Cuba, but Argentina, Venezuela and elsewhere in Latin America. The exodus of English speakers soon followed.





Difficulties for both sides
James McCleary, his wife and two children left Miami in 1987 for Vermont, where he is now a farmer. McCleary, 58, said his inability to speak Spanish made it difficult for him to find work — it once took seven months to get hired as a cook.
"The job market was very tough. It was very, very difficult," he said.
His wife, Lauren, was born and raised in Miami and they visit at least twice a year, but she feels that it's no longer her hometown.
"I don't like being there anymore. It is very, very different," she said. "I cannot live there anymore, I can't speak their language."
Nevertheless, she likes the diversity of the population of South Florida and regrets not learning Spanish in school.
Librarian Martha Phillips, 61, believes those who speak Spanish will continue to have more opportunities and she doesn't think that's necessarily fair. Phillips said she is sorry to see non-Spanish-speakers abandoning Miami, and said she's concerned that the area "will be like a branch of Latin America."
"I do resent the fact that people seem to expect that the people who live here adjust to their ways, rather than learning English and making adjustments," she said. "Obviously I don't expect an older person to learn to speak English, but younger people come in and they don't seem to make much of an effort to learn to adapt to this country and they expect us to adapt to them."
Some Spanish speakers say they have their own trouble with those who only speak English.
Mary Bravo, a 37-year-old Venezuelan business owner, moved to Miami nine years ago. She understands English but only speaks a little.
"This land is theirs. We should try to speak English," she said, "but they don't even try to understand us."

What happened to English being the primary language? This is BS! I get so pissed when I go shopping and they speak to me first in Spanish because I am Mexican? Idiots!

A lot of what was written was true...Having lived in Miami since 1951 except for time in the U.S. Coast Guard I find it difficult sometimes doing business.

I can tell you that I was VERY SUCESSFUL in the businesses I was in. If you know your "CHIT" better then everyone else in your field you don't have to "speakie de language". The only problem is the other 99% of the smucks do need to learn it.

It is one of the reasons I want to leave the area but I will tell you it is low on the list.

I can tell you Miami (southeast florida, miami, ft lauderdale, the keys) is a melting pot of many cultures and it gives you a very large variety of things to do...

Also there are different versions of spanish with words having different meanings. The best example is the word Papaya. To most spanish speaking people it is a tropical fruit but in cuban spanish it means Pussy and not the cat version. The cubans call it fruta bomba...

I couldn't get used to people pronouncing CHurch .. shursh, and CHair ... shair. And lastly, I taught school in Coral Gables briefly ... but when my 1st graders all spoke English as a 2nd language, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE BORN IN THE U.S. .. I decided it was time to move. :crying:

This could have been solved by our Founding Fathers by designating English as our official language. It could have been solved years ago by politicians by writing a simple bill.

It can't be solved today because the Latin vote is seen as too important to risk losing.

Politicians are weak kneed and afraid to do anything of any real substance. If a democrap is elected president next, the wall construction along the southern border will cease. Everyone will be granted "rights" they already have, but they'll be made special using language that will designate many different ETHNICITIES as having rights. Whites will be left out of these special rights.

It's a slippery slope and we're too far down it to turn back without someone with ginormous brass ones to lead the way.

It should be noted the language issue is being handles on the state level in many cases. why the state level? They're the ones that have to pay for all the dual language learning material, voting material, road signs, etc.

They're parasites that drain the life out of the cities. The only way to come back to life for these metro areas is to drive out the poverty stricken and redevelop by pushing the low lifes of all three races to the margins. It's been done for years and it will continue for years.

George Washington was really the 8th President of the United States!

George Washington was not the first President of the United States. In fact, the first President of the United States was one John Hanson. Don't go checking the encyclopedia for this guy's name - he is one of those great men that are lost to history. If you're extremely lucky, you may actually find a brief mention of his name.

The new country was actually formed on March 1, 1781 with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation.
This document was actually proposed on June 11, 1776, but not agreed upon by Congress until November 15, 1777. Maryland refused to sign this document until Virginia and New York ceded their western lands (Maryland was afraid that these states would gain too much power in the new government from such large amounts of land).

Once the signing took place in 1781, a President was needed to run the country. John Hanson was chosen unanimously by Congress (which included George Washington). In fact, all the other potential candidates refused to run against him, as he was a major player in the revolution and an extremely influential member of Congress.

As the first President, Hanson had quite the shoes to fill. No one had ever been President and the role was poorly defined. His actions in office would set precedent for all future Presidents.

He took office just as the Revolutionary War ended. Almost immediately, the troops demanded to be paid. As would be expected after any long war, there were no funds to meet the salaries. As a result, the soldiers threatened to overthrow the new government and put Washington on the throne as a monarch.

All the members of Congress ran for their lives, leaving Hanson as the only guy left running the government. He somehow managed to calm the troops down and hold the country together. If he had failed, the government would have fallen almost immediately and everyone would have been bowing to King Washington. In fact, Hanson sent 800 pounds of sterling siliver by his brother Samuel Hanson to George Washington to provide the troops with shoes.

Hanson, as President, ordered all foreign troops off American soil, as well as the removal of all foreign flags. This was quite the feat, considering the fact that so many European countries had a stake in the United States since the days following Columbus.

Hanson established the Great Seal of the United States, which all Presidents have since been required to use on all official documents.

President Hanson also established the first Treasury Department, the first Secretary of War, and the first Foreign Affairs Department.

Lastly, he declared that the fourth Thursday of every November was to be Thanksgiving Day, which is still true today.

The Articles of Confederation only allowed a President to serve a one year term during any three year period, so Hanson actually accomplished quite a bit in such little time.

Six other presidents were elected after him - Elias Boudinot (1783), Thomas Mifflin (1784), Richard Henry Lee (1785), Nathan Gorman (1786), Arthur St. Clair (1787), and Cyrus Griffin (1788) - all prior to Washington taking office.

So what happened?

Why don't we ever hear about the first seven Presidents of the United States?

It's quite simple - The Articles of Confederation didn't work well. The individual states had too much power and nothing could be agreed upon.

A new doctrine needed to be written - something we know as the Constitution.

And that leads us to the end of our story.

George Washington was definitely not the first President of the United States. He was the first President of the United States under the Constitution we follow today.

And the first seven Presidents are forgotten in history.

The last glacial epoch started in 70,000 B.C. and ended around 10,000 B.C....correct? It was those who had left between 80K and 70K that became trapped behind the glaciers...correct? There was no "adaptation to changing climate in Africa", Africa was, is and always will be hot, until this world ends. You're sticking to a false premise regarding African climate.

P: HELL NO! In fact the opposite has been the case. Again, the Negro gene is "dominant" and erases characteristics in other races...this is a fact and the reality. Maybe I don't understand what you mean here...provide me an example of how Negroid genes are erased when a negro and any other race mix? I mean I see where a white and black mix, the child is no longer white...we call them "mulattos" correct? But, I haven't seen a pure white child (blue eyed and blond) come from a true negro and white mating.

P: Again you've got this completely backwards. Negro is the original human, people of color, absent of all "recessive" traits. White's picked up "recessive" traits from being in "colder" climates. Therefore, when they mix back with the negro, who possesses the original and dominant traits, the "mulatto" is produced...melanin begins to produce color again. Do you understand this?

P: You're wrong. The Negro gene had all the adaptability it needed to deal with the various climates. But, when mutations occur, as from prolonged exposure to a particular climate (like cold, for instance), "natural selection" takes away from the original gene quality in favor of traits needed for survival in the current environment. Problem is, once that happens, it's hard to get back to the original state.

P: This is true, the colder it gets the lighter people get. Man originated in the heat and much later moved to the cold, and then came whites and other races...correct?

P: Again, where are you getting this from? Negroid genes? There are no "negroid" genes...that's a racist remark. Everyone has the same genes. Being able to darken in light and get lighter in the dark/cold, is the normal behavior of genes. This is the "oldest" gene. But, the problem is that once those genes go through great and extreme change (i.e. melanin production is totally suppressed) it's difficult, nearly impossible to get it to produce color again. You sit in the sun and you tan/burn...but alas, it peels off. This is the melanin cell's attempt at normal functioning.

P: No, they follow the scientific method advanced by Mendel's Law. Tiger is darker than his Asian mother. Colin is darker than his Scottish parent, Maria is darker than her white mother, Lenny is darker than his jewish father. The melanian producing cell apparent in black people is a genetically dominant trait and a normal functioning of that cell/genes. Do you understand what "recessive" and "dominant" mean in regard to genetic science...here's the definition:

Of, relating to, or characteristic of a pattern of inheritance of an autosomal trait that is expressed by a gene that ALWAYS manifests itself phenotypically
(In other words, the genetic dominant trait will always manifest itself in mating)
Note that you can't search and find "genetic recessive" on goggle, it takes you to "mutations" and "disorders". Recessive genes are not normal...and as such could never be the original condition of man. Now, I'm inclined to allow you your conceptions, considering you're speaking from your own experience. To you, since you are recessive, you're inclined to think that must be "normal" and the way things have always been. But, this is part of the delusion that characterizes the Racist mind. For you own salvation, and that of your offspring, it is important that you know the truth and make decisions that would lead to your successful existance, among normal people, for ever. As long as you make yourself the center of reality, it's no better than a mule trying to say the same...it's a short lived existence.
