How capable ...or not capable is the base H3? I'm having a real hard time finding an 07 or 08 adventure pack in my price range where I live, and I'm starting to think that I'll have to settle for the base. I don't do anything extreme, just some trail driving, very slight climbing. I don't want to break my **** though, lol.

The base is fine for what you want to do...

You will be fine. I drove regular 4x4's (no lockers or ultra low range) for years.
If you think you will realy get into off roading keep looking for an H3 with the adventure package. There may be some great deals on leased or even new ones soon?

You can always add a rear locker later. But I would try to find an Adventure. :excited:
The traction control does a good job of getting you out of or through most situations.

Hold out for an Adventure. The gearing and locker are well worth it.
What price range? There are many of us all over the US who may be able to run accross a good deal.

:iagree: hold out for the adventure.
The 33 inch tires ,locker, granny low,HD suspention I think it comes with matts also you get a left rear cubby if you dont upgrade the radio.
The 32 base tires I heard dont last to long,I have 49,000 0n the 33's and they still look great and I feel they are good on the road and off the road so no need to upgrade the tires.

well, if your off-roading will be as you described, you're perfectly set with base. That's what I have and so far I didn't need locker. I do use all gearing that I have in my base, including low range lock on some steeper hills where I wouldn't get through otherwise by any chance. I upgraded tires to 33" M/T, and installed rocker panel protectors. I do light off-roading, mainly Joshua Tree area, with some rougher spots here and there but never any problem.
However, I do regret that I don't have ADV (didn't think of it in the time of purchase) because I'd feel much safer and would tackle spots that I currently avoid from fear of getting stuck (I off-road solo)... you can check my pics in the image section to see the actual terrain.. I'm planning to upgrade to '09 with dual lockers I guess at some point and then keep the vehicle forever, or maybe get H2 if I'd find a good deal; but I really like my current truck soo..
good luck with your choice!
here would be pics with some of my typical terrain, also, while climbing that hill there I could see sky only through the windshield later during the climb, not crazy steep, but still fun hill to drive up:
