I just got my oil changed in my work truck. They suggested a synthetic because my milleage is getting up there (106K). I said "sure" and went with a Durablend by Valvoline. I'm big on maintenance and keeping things is great running order. I have always put regular oil in my H2. I'm starting to think about a blend or full synthetic.I know have 29k on it. I was brought up with the theory that if you changed your oil every 3k miles religiously that youd be fine and your engine will run for a good long time. I always change the oil every 3k in my vehicles. I do use Mobil1 in my Grand National because that was what it came with from the factory and the turbo. So....dealing with the H2, I want to keep this truck for a good long time. Is synthetic necassary? will it help prolong the life of the motor? Any issues changeing over to a synthetic? If you use synthetic do you go longer between changes?
Thanks for your help.

I run synthetic in everything I own. Royal Purple in my H2 & Cobra. Rotella T Synthetic in my Duramax & New Holland Tractor. I swear by them.

I see there effects and how many miles they'll go. I work on cars for a living

Hi i have been a tech for 26 years and i use Royal Purple in all my autos and my bikes. I do change my oil at 3000 miles. Some oil companys say you can go longer between changes but i don't. It has less fiction and will increase bearing life. No problem to changing over, it will take about 2 or 3 oil changes to get all the old oil out. To me its worth the extra cash for oil.

Intercooled, I was actually just looking into this too in the last few days... There is way too much positive feedback out there, and benefits (longer between changes for one) on the Mobil One synth or other synthetics in general...

I don't think it's a question anymore of is it a good idea, I think it's a question of, do I want to spend the extra money. I am a cheap bastich (an insult that is apparently a combination of the words bastard and bitch), and believe it or not, have brought my past Hummers to Mitsubishi dealers or whoever had the $14.99 oil and filter change in my mailing coupons. I have never paid more than $17.99 for an oil change and will try to break the habit next time for the Mobil One Synthetic...

I run synthetic in everything. In fact, we were just talking about my JCW mini cooper. According to the algorithms built into the computer, my first oil change isn't till another 4K miles. (I've got 14K miles on it now)

That's 18K miles on a first oil change???

I'm sure the BMW engineers know more than I and I also know that by spacing out maintenance, it's a great selling tool that they are paying for oil changes for the first 30K miles.

I changed my oil at 1200 miles, 5K, 10K and every 5K after that with synthetic.

I don't care what the vehicle is, 5K and synthetic.

I run it in everything! My Twin Turbo gets about 100 to 200 miles a year, so it gets changed every year. The GT2 is coming up on it's first change @ 186 miles. I don't care, they cost too much to be cheap. The H2 gets changed every 5000 miles, no matter what the computer says. The synthetic is just better. It still gets dirty just like regular. Who cares about the extra $$, look at an engine change cost!

I go to Valvoline oil change place for convenience. I will start using the thier synthetic. I think I'll follow the 5K rule with the syn. They get, I think $60 for the Syn oil change. Valvoline makes good products I assume. They dont do Mobil 1 there. Any feed back on the Valvoline Syn?

When I didn't know any better I ran Chevron supreme 10-40 in my 1996 Dodge ram 1500 5.9 gas engine lifted 4x4 PU. I changed the oil and filter every 3 or 4 thousand miles . when I sold it it had 278000 miles and ran perfect . the guy that bought it now has switched to Dello 400 15-40 and it has 302000 miles on it now . he just passed emissions lat month ,and it still runs great . just imagine how many miles you could get with synthetic .:shhh:
