Need help from anyone who knows the lift gate

Hate to start another thread, but there I need a quick answer.

I have ordered the rear license plate pocket that has the light in it, to replace my pocket that does not have the light.

Another forum member did this swap and said he needed a harness from GM. I ordered both from GM Direct.com, but the damn harness is back ordered nationally.

I even called a few Hummer dealers in the USA and they said not one dealer in the country has one.

The question is... do really have to have this harness?? I don't have the new pocket to see it, but I am thinking this harness is needed due to the plugs on the lights on the pocket???

Is there any way to just tap into the rear roof lights and power the license plate lights??

Hi i guess you removed the spare tire? If you did the old harness is to short to go inside the truck up the 1/4 panel and out then into the hatch. You could add some wire so its long enough but you still need to join it to the one their and the new plate light you may need some new weather pack connectors. Hope this helps.

You're saying use the harness AND CONNECTION POINT that came off the spare tire plate light setup and just lengthen it??


I'm not quite following you....

It would seem that it would be easier to tap a rear roof marker light and run that down to the gate and then to the plate light.

Well after further investigation this part number , 15231078, is used in several GM autos, and it is the same part.

I guess what I need is confirmation that power to the bulb is not some special GM plug. If I can just tap into wires on the bulb and someplace on the other end that's no big deal.

Hell even if it's a simple plug with simple + - I can deal with it...

I posted this in one of my other threads but did not get a response, so sorry for the double post. I would really like to get some feed back about my proposed wiring from people in the know...


I got the OEM pocket, but GM is national back ordered on the wire harness.. so I would like to tap into the rear light gate lights as shown in the picture below.

Don't want to over draw and be blowing fuses or having dim license pate lights either.
