View Full Version : Almost no output on middle and rear speakers
Ever since my last visit to the dealer for warantee work, I've been bugged by what seems like too much bias to the front speakers in my 2003 H2 (CD/Tape/Radio head unit). I've had to run the fade control more that 2/3toward the back to make it sound balanced to me (2/3 of way from middle on radio display to the left, i.e. way back).
I finally climbed in the rear seats and listened with fade set to zero today and it's clear that 90-95% of the sounds is coming out the front speakers. You can tell the other speakers are getting signal by leaning in close to them, but you've got to get really close to tell for sure. Clearly not normal.
What could cause this? They upgraded my radio firmware during the last visit in an attempt to fix the auto volume feature.
Could something have gotten hooked back up wrong? Or is there a calibration that needs to be done? Or could the software be buggy?
I'd just drop it at the dealer to have it looked at except I don't live near one and don't have a trek to the big city planned just yet.

BTW, this is with Auto Eq set to normal. It's not just on the Driver setting.

Get that gun outta my face and mabye I'll tell ya what the problem is. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
I generally don't shoot guys in drag unless they attempt to use that concealed weapon between their legs to cause me severe bodily harm and/or death.

Thanks for removing your Avatar. A picture of a woman pointing a gun into the camera is unbecoming.
Now for your sound system problem....Bring it to the dealer and have them swap out your unit. It has nothing to do with the speakers.
So what, the head unit's defective? The software's buggy?
How do you know this...you've seen it before.

Sounds like a problem that can't be fixed even if we talked you though it. Buck up and take it back to the dealership. It's the easiest solution.
I was planning on taking it in next week.
I'm just curious about what the cause of the problem might be. Not so I can fix it myself, just so I can know why?

This may seem overly simple but it tripped me up when I got mine. Is your back seat head unit turned on??? It turns off the back speakers when on so as to allow the back seat passenger to listen on head phones without interference. Turn it off and the speakers come back on.
Screeper,
Unfortunately this is not the problem. Thanks for the idea though.
DennisAJC, any one else,
Care to let me in on the secret about what's wrong with the head unit?
I went into my office in the Twin Cities, dropped the H2 at the dealer in Roseville (McCarthy's) and asked them to fix it and do a rotate. I pick up the car at abot 4:30 and they wrote on the service form "Auto Eq set to Driver. Changedto Spacious to balance more sound to rear." as if I'm an idiot and didn't try messing with all the auto eq settings. All the tech's had supposedly left so no one with any apparent knowledge to talk to. Service rep says, "I dunno, but if you want we could just replace the radio since it has a scratch on the volume knob." Unfortunately, he wanted to hold onto it for two days to make that happen.
Then I checked the tires. Being a bit paranoid, I had marked them with a sharpie to tell which was which. Lo and behold they only did a front-to-back "rotate" no cross over like the manual recommends. THen they write on the service form "Rotated tires in manner most appropriate for vehicle to maximize tire life" as if I'm an idiot and can't read the recommendation in the manual.
It was pretty much a wasted trip to the dealer.
So any nitty gritty details on what the real problem with the head unit is would be greatly appreciated. I guess I'll see what Betts Hummer down in Des Moines is like on the next try.
