From Hummer Guy:

General Motors reportedly had two credible offers from American company Raser Technologies to purchase the HUMMER brand prior to its decision to shut down the brand completely. One before GM decided to proceed with a deal to China?s Tengzhong and one after that deal fell apart.

While neither anyone at GM or Raser has been willing to go on the record, we have had contact with sources familiar with the matter that are confirming that in the latest round of HUMMER brand bids, Raser Technology had a very serious and credible offer that for unknown (at least to us) reasons was turned down in favor of shutting the brand down.

Similar sources told The Car Connection that Raser had met nearly all the conditions for a takeover of the HUMMER brand, and that their intention was to eventually turn HUMMER into a ?green? brand with the use of plug-in, electric technology.

In 2009, Raser worked directly with General Motors on their construction of a 100 MPG Hybrid H3. General Motors used the project to test the feasibility of an electric powertrain in HUMMER vehicles ? which for offroading, has long been the alternative fuel powertrain of choice due to its ability to deliver high levels of low-end torque.

?Prior to the brand?s sale, we began exploratory work on the feasibility of plug-in hybrid technology in a vehicle like the H3,? said HUMMER CEO Jim Taylor during one of HummerGuy.net?s ?Ask Jim? features. ?The project included technology from Raser Technologies and vehicle integration from FEV. This vehicle has been touring the country and is undergoing testing of the component durability and packaging. We will continue to study the impact that plug-in hybrid technology has on the durability and vehicle capability in the off-road environment.?

The question today remains, ?Why would GM turn down a credible offer from an American company?? Is it because they didn?t want HUMMER to become a green brand ? something that under GM they would have never been able to do? Is it because Raser didn?t have experience running a worldwide auto company (neither did Tengzhong)?

We?re working on bringing you the answers ? but the deal is so fresh that many aren?t willing to talk

Must be a good reason why GM has turned down Raser....twice.

Hope to know more info as it becomes available.

I plan on writing my senator about this! I think part of the reason is that GM doesn't want competition to its brands. The H2 would compete against the Escalade and the the H3 would compete against a myriad GM SUVs including the Traverse which Auto Week says GM spent a lot of R&D money on.

When deregulation hit the airlines in 1978, many airlines sold their DC9s for scrap metal instead of selling them for much more to a start up airline that would use them to compete with them. Big companies will do almost anything to stifle competition and raise profits. Perhaps GM would get 100 million in a Hummer sale, but what would it cost them in lost sales down the road?

TOTAL BS!! That right there is whats wrong w/ this government!! They went out in right field to save GM and DO NOT want any other outsider/competition in their way to save face, therefore, will do what they can to eliminate any other possible sales other than a GM model!! TOTAL F'in BS!!

Wouldn't the Chinese deal have created competition? I am sure we will never know what drives these decisions. If they shut down Hummer versus selling it than maybe they will make a Tahoe with a special offroad package. Isn't that what everybody thinks an H2 is anyway;)

You got it, Government Motors doesnt want an awefull brand like Hummer to be around any more. With government involvement in corporate America you can expect decisions like this. Wont be too long before helath insurnace companys start going out of business. The top Buerocrats made this decision. Were under a new Regime now for a while, and its not a totallt free society for the time being. Do you really think a senator is going to back keeping Hummer??

Dear State Rep Jay P. Goyal,
I was very disappointed to hear that General Motors plans to shut down the HUMMER brand despite having viable offers from American companies that would help preserve 3,000 American Jobs.
I urge you to contact the U.S. Treasury and demand an independent investigation into the possibility of keeping the HUMMER brand alive by selling the company to an outside entity within the United States.
3,000 jobs are at stake this week, many have already been lost in the last few days. Please take action immediately so even more aren?t lost for good.
Sincerely,
Ed Sheridan
