View Full Version : To buy or not to buy the extended warranty

I'm in a bind here and can't make up my mind. Funds are a little tight and I've never been a guy who goes and buys any extended warranty what so ever.
However, reading this forum has got me thinking about the GMPP extended warranty.
Here's a couple things I need advice on.
I'm only driving about 8k miles a year, give or take and I've got 32k on the clock.
If I buy the 4 year GMPP at 8 k a year that will drop me off at 64k miles. Seems to me that 64k miles is just about when things will start to go wrong and really more of the mark an extended warranty would be needed.
The extended warranty is 1550.00. There are a lot of things I can fix myself and if the chance of repairs going much over that aren't that high I'd rather bank the money and pay for the repairs over the next four years.
What do you guys think?

If the truck is just a daily driver and some highway on road then save your money. The H2 is really a very dependable truck. Not to say that something could not fail but that can happen to any vehicle. I only have the extended GMPP plan on my H1 and it has more than paid for itself several times in fact but the H1 is a different animal.

I want an H1....... ;)
Thanks for your input.....
I just had the 30k service and a side from the service there was-
Lower control arms that made noise- replaced
Navigation kept resetting- fixed
A/C leaking coolant-fixed
Key not coming out of ignition- fixed
It seems a lot of little things... I guess if that was it after 30k then thats not too bad... I just like the luxury of taking it in and saying here- call me when it's done, and not having to worry about the bill.
I've read these forums too much is what it is...

I personally like the piece of mind that a warranty provides knowing that once I purchase it I dont need to budget for a surprise unexpected repair. We purchased a GMPP for our 2006 before it went out of warranty but ended up trading it in less than 1 year later on our 2008, GMPP pro rated the warranty and we got around $1,000 back from them. I dont remember the exact plan we bought but it was either a 3 or 4 year with lower miles as we dont put many miles on our H2 (wife takes the train downtown and I typically drive my TL for work)..... mostly for hauling the skis around in the summer and going snowboarding in the winter.
BTW PDX.... noticed you are on the Greenhulk forums, I just got a new motor together and installed in my RXP after grenading it last month, you still have your RXP-X?

LOL.... small world even when it's cyber huh? Man I've posted a lot over there. That place has changed a lot......
Did you PM over there asking about my engine?
I still have the P-X and honestly it's killing me to sell it but the wife really wants a boat and just doesn't enjoy skiing as much as I do.
I've got an 81-82 MPH setup, easy, I just need to finish the little things but I'm afraid if I do I won't sell it. Plus we just did a complete gut and remodel on the home so that took most of my summer.
I like that piece of mind also. Like I said in my OP though, I've never ever been one to pay for extended warranty. That 1550.00 could go a long ways for repairs or it could be a small chunk (thinking tranny) of a repair bill.
I've just read so many things on this board about these Hummers and the nickel and diming on top of the major problems (again, the tranny/tranny cooler).
I would just kick my self if I bought the damn thing and barely got my money out of it just to have a major repair 3 months after the plan expires.
What really gets me is the mileage is just too low now, and the plan will expire when I'd think I'd really start to get some use out of the warranty.... 64k..
Hi my truck is a 2008 and i had the back up camera fixed and the front diff oil leak fixed they spit the front diff and replaced the axle seals. They also replace the sun roof frame and motor because the glass moved up the down when it was closed making alot of noise going down the road. The sun roof repair alone was over $1500. I bought the extra warranty and glad i did, in 5000 miles i will be on the extended warranty that covers just the power train.

Thanks Tracy!
You think most of the stuff you listed was stuff that was "new defects" and now that you got it out of the way you've got a solid truck?

Tracy..... my roof on the 2008 is doing the same thing, when its closed I can move it with my hand, going downt he highway I can feel if moving from the wind and it makes noise over bumps, I also have a squeak in the interior coming from the back over bumps. It will be going into the hummer in the next couple of weeks, we only have a couple more weeks of being able to get out on the water here and I dont want to have the truck tied up at the dealer
Thanks Tracy!

Hi I have been a mechanic for 25 years and one trip to the dealer could easy cost the 1500 bucks IMO buy it. Hopefully nothing else goes for a sh"t in my truck for awhile.

Hi I could move the glass up and down at the back almost 1/4 inch it was driving me nuts. They have to drop the headliner to fix it and parts alone were $1900 but I live in Canada. I dropped the headliner myself so it didn't get fu'ked up. They had to order the 2 parts it was a week to get them.

I opted for the factory extended warranty which I paid about $1000 for. Have put 10,000 miles on in two years and have made up this $1000 more than a few times. I NEVER buy extended warranties for ANYTHING except for the car...

My regular warrenty just ended in June. I've been thinking about extended also but like some others on here I never buy extended warrentys. I always here about the warrenty companys fighting not to cover things. I always believed extended warrentys to be more of a scam than anything else. But I have heard some good thing about the GMPP warrentys. If anything I woudn't go with one of those other independent agencies. Ive been up in the air too with the H2, I know repairs for the beast can become costly. Can anyone go and buy an extended warrenty from GMPP?

Just got off the phone with the dealership in PA. 2006 prices go up 30-40% in 5 days.
Also, if your original factory warranty has expired, it's too late. You have to get the GMPP before your factory warranty expires.
I'm so torn on this.
On top of the warranty there is a 350.00 Hummer surcharge and for me a 225.00 fee because the truck is titled in the business name.
That's over 2k for 4 years / 32k miles.
I think I'm going to take my chances. With my connections and these forums I'm sure most repairs can be done for much less than book.
Taking it in Monday to go over everything one last time.

When I bought my 2005 in May I got the GMPP for 4 years 60,000 miles. I think it was $17-1800. I'll have to look. The 60,000 miles is 60,000 plus the 21,000 it had when I bought it.

Where did you get that much coverage for that little amount of money?
Has it paid off?

Bought my 2004 H2 in 2006 with 32,000 miles. Got an extended warranty though GM for $1000 which covered 3 yrs or 30,000 miles with $100 deductible. I had a bunch of repairs done under the warranty....you can check some of my previous posts for details....powersteering, water pump, ww wiper, ex manifold bolts, pitman and tie rods. broken shifter wire, leaking diff seal and a few other things. Fixed water leaks myself. The truck already had the updated outside mirrors installed and I'm not sure what other repairs the original owner had done. I now have about 53,000 miles on the truck and have had more repairs done than alot of other Hummer owners. But I have read where some owners have had more done than me. The warranty has recently expired, but hopefully I have corrected most of the main problem areas. The ext warranty saved me a bunch of $$$, but each truck....and the way it is used is different. Some owners have never had to do more than routine maintenance...filters, lube and fluids.
It's a tough call, but was worth it in my case. "Pay me now or pay me later"
Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.;)

They had the best prices when I bought the last 2 GMPP plans I have had (one for my Z06 and for the previous H2)

That's who I looked at, and talked to. They have a 350 Hummer surcharge and a 225 fee because it's licensed to a business.

I'm going to skip the warranty. I don't drive enough, and will be driving it even less next spring, to justify upwards of 2k.
Thanks for all of your opinions!

I rarely buy extended warranties because I feel they are not worth the expense. But because My H2 has so many electrical options I made an exception. In my case, it was money well spent. I am about even and I still have another five years of coverage.
