A competent shop should be able to rebuild for 3-5K depending on what needs to be replaced, and the ammount of machine work needed.

I, too, will be keeping my H2 for a long time, and when the drive line gets old and tired, I'm most likely putting in a LSX376 with a TVS2300, and a 4l80E. Lots more $$$ but Lots more power and fun. And bullet proof.

I would not rebuild the stock motor, replace it a create motor to the same specs. If you rebuild it and need to bore the cylinders which you may, you change the displacement of the engine - meaning the stock computer program will not operate the engine correctly. So if you rebuild the stock engine you will probably have to get a custom tune. If you go that route, might as well replace the cam for low end torque and economy, replace the heads with better flowing ones... get the tune. You will have better economy, more low end power, and a fresh engine.

New rings, bearings, gaskets, no machine work... do it yourself in 3 weekends - $1,500 including the tools you need to get it done. While you have it out, get a reman trans and rebuild the transfer case. You could do it all for $2,500.
