Windshield cracked!! heartbroken :-(

ok, so i thought this car is built like a tank, i guess it just looks like it... ok, never went offroading yet and i just got a crack on my windshield about 14 inches long!!! i cant bear to look at it.. does anyone know how much it costs to replace and who i should call to replace in nj..
i dont want to be ripped off by the dealer.. and i dont have insurance for glass.. actually i heard in nj they dont have glass insurance. i hate this state!!!

any advice will be greatly appreciated...

Wow that sucks, I thought if it was the front window they had to cover it in any state.
I would have to call about 6 or 8 places to compare. However if you are saying that it broke from body flexing or poor fit the dealer should pick up the tab.

H2 Guy I would check your insurance,in OH it is covered under comprehensive ( same as animals and vandalism).
I have State Farm and no deductable so I just call insurance company and they give u a list of shops that they deal w/ direct.
They came to my H2 dealer to replace the cracked glass in the Suburban I traded in on the H2 and never even saw the bill everything was done between them. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Good news!!! i just called my insurance company and they do cover glass under comprehensive coverage!! so i asked them to bring my deductable down from $500 to $100.. it will be $200 extra a year for the h2 and my Honda.. but that is worth it!!!!
the only mistake i did is that i kinda mentioned the window is already cracked.. but then i called back and told them i had a bad cell connection with the other rep and i think she misunderstood me and thought that my h2 has a crack.. i was only talking about my brother having this misfortune with his truck over the weekend and he has a high deductable.. so i was just protecting myself!!!
anyways, my policy change takes in affect at midnight tonight.. and i have this strange feeling my windshield is going to crack while i go offroad this weekend!!!!

by the way, insurance doesnt go up if i say i take the car offroad, does it????

You're one lucky SOB H2_GUY. I got a stone chip in my windshield and am screwed.
The replacement cost is $600. Can't put it through my insurance company cause my deductable is a G-Note.

Hey Guys and gals, if any,
I am new to this forum. Just discovered you yesterday. I have been looking for other H2 owners because I have had some problems that the dealer told me were unique to me. Of course I am sad to see that any of you are having difficulties but I am very happy to see that I am not crazy or particularly unique. I am on my 3rd windshield in less than 9 months. Currently, I have 3 large rock chips in the one that I have. I kept asking the dealer if anyone else was having this difficulty but they said that I was a fluke of statistics. I have been using my engineering background to analyze the glass. So far the only thing that I have come up with is that the front glass is a compound curve in that it is curved in two directions, top to bottom as well as side to side. I am not sure yet as to how the Mexican company is tempering the glass but I am working on it. The main issue of course is, If you look at other common front glass configurations on X vehicles, the rake is more extreme but another issue is that if you have a compound curve glass and a rock does strike, even the slightest give would reduce the stress on the glass. In a compound curve there would have to be compression instead of flex. Compression and glass is not going to happen. This is a theory, any comments? If true, it appears that we stuck. Don't get me wrong, I reallllllyyyyy like my truck but something has got to give.

By the way, you can add me to the keyed list. I am thinking about having some large magnetic signs made that say GREEN PEACE and sticking them to the side of my truck to hide the "to the metal" gouges. Wouldn't thay fry their ass?

I think your cracks are more of a result of the angle of the glass than it's ability to flex under the pressure of a rock strike. One thing I have noticed twice since I have had my H2 is that a rock struck my windshield after being flung from my one of my own front tires. I then began to notice on gravel roads that the front tires slings rocks forward of the rig from time to time.

I am going to apply a plastic laminate on the outside of the windshield once I replace it and see if it will help any. I have spoken to the manufacturer of a laminate and they don't suggest applying it to the outside of a windshield but they are interested in me giving it a try to see how it stands up and to see how well it performs under strikes from debris as well as the constant friction from wipers.

That 3m clear laminent is an awsome product. It will work on anything including your windshield. The only problem is that if any grit gets on your windshield and you use your wipers it will scratch and be hard to see through.

Be careful...NJ will catch you for insurance fraud. ANY change to a policy with a following claim within 30 days raises a flag and WILL be investigated.

Not that I care but I KNOW someone that was caught doing EXACTLY what you are doing. He had a small fender bender...no police report. Called and lowered his deductible...then reported a week later. Got SEVERAL calls from fraud department. Long story short...they did not pay. Gave him a choice...pay in full, or be charged with fraud.Check the fine print on your policy folks.
