View Full Version : Aside from H1 or H2, what would you get?
The thought hasn't even occured to me the past year since I've owned my H2, but the H3 release got me thinking what else I'd excited about getting. I like this Jeep Rescue concept, which I'd definitely get over an H3, and maybe one day try in place of my H2 when it wears out. Respectable features and some cool toys.
JEEP RESCUE FEATURES

Front hydropneumatic suspension combines with the heavy-duty link-coil rear suspension

In black of course, this color has to go.
Cameras underneath would be cool, but not sure how long they'd be visible (mud and all)

Looks like it may need more undercarriage protection. A few more skid plates would be nice.!

I find it especially interesting that one thing was never mentioned - price. Even Jeep afficianadoes are going to have a hard time coughing up $60,000+ for a vehicle when a modified Rubi isn't too far off and and $20,000 cheaper. Has anyone seen what Jeep plans to market the Rescue for?

The Rescue is clearly marketed towards the same people who bought H2's and rightly so.

Very true, but keep in mind that there are 2 distinct types of H2 buyers - those who bought it for the looks or for status, and those who bought it for off-road capability. Judging from GM's numbers that roughly 5% of H2 owners take the truck off-road, I don't think that there's that big of a market for another true heavy-duty large SUV that excels off-road (not merely capable, but is truly built for off-roading like the H2). I think those who are into serious off-roading and can afford the Rescue will definitely be enticed, but I also think a number of serious off-roaders will still gawk at the price tag when they already have decent modified vehicles that can keep up with any off-the-lot truck. Jeep may want a slice of the pie of the current Hummer market, but I can't see that there's that much up for grabs in the first place. They will certainly win a lot of Jeep owners back who were looking for something more than the Liberty and felt that Jeep strayed from its roots, however.
It would be interesting to run an informal poll on this site on how many would consider trading in their H2 for a Rescue. I think you'd find that quite a few off-roaders would still keep their H2s despite the fact there's a better off-road machine out there. While the H2 may not be as capable as the Rescue in that respect, the Rescue is lacking a lot of what the H2 has - such as looks and refinement. I can't imagine your typical soccer mom or business owner who does off-road on the weekends driving the Rescue on daily errands or to entertain clients. It simply isn't the complete package that the H2 is.

Under-powered turds. Chrysler had the chance to drop in a V8 and instead put in a couple of hamsters(Richard Gere has ruined the supply of gerbils) on a wheel. That could have been such a great retro hotrod.
Oh well, they've redeemed themselves with the 300C SRT-8. 425hp!!!! I drove the "regular" 300C Hemi and it rocks!! I loved it!!!

I'm intrigued by the Jeep Rescue, but Jeep is known for having a HUGE gap between their "concept" car and reality. I sincerely doubt they'll deliver anything remotely close to what they are calling for.
If they do make it...I will take a serious look at it. I think we all will. I plan to always own a formiddable 4x4.
The greatest disappionment with the H2 is the appalling lack of clearance. The approach/departure angles are great, the 4x4 system is good/great...but we REALLY should have a front-locker in contending to be the primiere offroad vehicle that can "go anywhere". But the clearance under our belly is just lousy.
Check it out: I was on the freeway and saw some Toyota truck, large size. I think it was a Tundra? There's ****loads of clearance between the ground and the belly!!!! And the cab sat at our same height! If they made the nose more snub, cut the back off, put on a full cabin, gave it traction-control & lockers...it'd kick our asses!
(hope cranky Steve doesn't read this)
The H2 did something very simple: it made "HUMMER" affordable and practical. What was either too expensive or not practical for regular family use was suddenly reasonable. That was then. Today the phenom is over, and gas prices are hurting it further.
GM should find a way to shrink the H2 about 10-15%, put a diesel in it, give it some clearance, add a front-locker and keep it fresh with some neat options.
Opps....looks like Jeep figured that out!

But they didn't, so it doesn't.
As for the Jeep- you'll just have to wait and see the final showroom product. You're so right about Jeep putting up a great concept vehicle and then playing 3 Card Monty with it.

Guess if H1 and H2 were out of the picture then it would be the other "off-roader" I've always lusted after!!
Can you drive that one? That's the US version, but there is a white Euro version on the same page. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Trust me when I tell you the Lambo LM002 is NOT in the same class as the H2. It was built for the Saudi sheiks that wanted to run fast on the sand. I seem to remember them being capable of 120mph on the sand.
I've driven them and they are uncomfortable & cramped inside. Driving an LM is very similar to driving a semi from the 80's.

Yeah, I know it's a bit of a beast, and incredibly impractical, but damn it has presence in the flesh!!
But DRTY is right, they are a pig to drive.
When I was down at the Lambo plant in Sant Agata seeing my car being made, I had the opportunity to drive one - unwieldy is the word that comes to mind! I also drove a modified version in Germany once - guy had put twin turbos on the V12 engine (I think Koenig in Switzerland did the conversion) - bit pointless really!...but good fun nonetheless!
Phil, yes the D90's are expensive over there, in the same way that H2's are big bucks over here. Don't think I would spend a great deal on one though - as you know they are VERY primitive (though admittedly effective!)

I hear you about that LM 002 Darren. A dealer by my house just got one in stock a week or two ago, I have been meaning to stop by and take a look at the thing, but I'm affraid I'll have a desire for an even more impractical car.
