How about the alternative: a sensor that just audibly indicates your proximity to an object behind you for a fraction the price?

What about getting a self adhesive fresnel lens for the "broader" view of things (in life?). And no, I don't have stocks in 3M.

Anyone in the SF Bay Area know which shop handles back up sensor? what type of stores do this? audio stores?
I saw sensor for sale about $10-$20, looks cheap plastic, but quality installation is a must.

My dealer just quoted me: "The backup sensor is 495.00 and the backup camera is 1,495.00. They both take a day to install."

I will absolutely get the sensor or camera both, no matter what, ASAP. I will not go into the details, just too embarrassed, enough to say that I just had another accident in my driveway last night. This one will cost me $3K-$4K to fix that car, Hummer is ok. I have had no accident for 16 years. I am soooooo stupid, I don't deserve to drive a Hummer.

I have decided to go with an audio back up sensor system ($60), and found some shops locally to do the job at $50/hr.

I also may double up with a LED light alert system if I find a good unit, the one I saw looks cheap, don't want to cheapen the dash. This type lights up green, yellow or red LED lights to indicate distance.

Once I get the parts number straighten up, I will also add a back Up Alert, which beeps when in reverse and change to brighter white LED reverse lights.

Visited and called a dozen small and chain stores, not one has back up sensor or camera. The next step will be to add a back up camera, since rear hitch has step, camera must go up. I am getting very serious about this task.

Nice looking sensor package, any ideas where the senor is mounted? Also, is there info on the detection range of the sensor, i.e. 1-3ft....?

Hey Mac,

I understand and agree with you. Living in the bay area myself, I worry about parking. If you bump the car behind you, you can take out their grill, and could be expense. I also worry about the kids when I go pick up my son at school. They seem to flock to the truck. I am thinking along the lines of a camera, but would love to hear what you think once you get them on. Let us know.

I have had 2 back up accidents in my own driveway, costing me $5K in repairs to 2 other cars. Both cases I did not even look, 4 tons Hummer backed staright into visitors' car/SUV. My own home my own driveway far from street no neighbor no strangers no traffic, I just backed out as I always did. The fault was my peewee brain. Audio alarm would have given me 1-2 seconds to step on the brake, it is always on whether I look or not, blind spot or not, peewee brain or not.

Based on my unfortunately experiences, I will add double or triple safety features to my butt. If anyone else has any systems to recommend, please let me know.

I'm not into this infrad sensor. Living in a city where parallel parking is a part of everyday life, you need to know how many inches are behind you. In every car I've had I could always sense how much space, but the H2 is too big and the bumper is high enough to damage grills.

I think a good feature to add that costs nothing is the wide-angel rear window lens. Here's one on ebay for under $5. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1875306003) THere's another thread on this on the forum.

For Mac it is simply a sign hanging from his front visor that says "Look when you back up Sherlock". /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey MAC,

Great work on the sensor. Please let me know how things turn-out. Maybe, like an alarm system, you'll get a discount on your auto insurance once you install one?

Seriously....good research, keep us posted! That looks like the ticket!

Seemed like I can handle the toughest city traffic with no problem, obviously I am my worst enemy. Once I accepted the fact of my smaller than usual brain size, logically I need some system to guard against myself, that is if I have a back up camera and LCD screen but not look at it when backing up. Audio alarm is activated once Hummer is in reverse, I have no choice of not hearing it. I cannot do anything about what have happened, but it is only logical to do whatever I can to prevent the next one. Luckily there were only vehicles I backed into, not people.

I want to look into commercial security/surveilance camera for Hummer, I recently installed the system at home, but it is too big for Hummer. There are some spy shops in town, I have also seen pin hole camera for sale in catalogs, all of which are cheaper than hitch camera($300).
