Here are a few pictures of my black SUT. I picked it up on Thursday, but I'm still waiting for the wrap around brush guard.

Is the midgate glass not tinted?

Dan, the midgate glass and midget midgate side windows (that's the technical name http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) are not tinted.
Oddly enough, I passed another black SUT from a different dealer about an hour after taking delivery.

How much is the Sewell dealership paying you to advertise for them? I see they placed their name on you tailgate! Is this extra? Did you ask them for their signature to be placed on your beautiful SUT...
I noticed that too. I didn't think many dealers did that anymore. They don't around here anyway. Here its usually a license plate holder with the advertisement on it.

Sewell does that on every car they sell - we have that on our '03 Denali too. If I hated the dealership, I would have removed it already - but since they did give me $500 of MSRP without even asking, I'm pretty happy. However, if they don't get my brush guard soon, that thing is coming off! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Thanks for the compliments everyone!
Okay Mike, time for a thorough review. Give us the lowdown on the SUT. Ride, power, features, impressions, etc. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You only have 4 days left, unless you decide to switch dealers again http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
If I have time this afternoon, I'll start writing up a review. First I have to go install XM in some friend's fugly Element.

Nice, but that spare tire is horrible looking.

For those interested, here's my brief review. Keep in mind I have only driven the truck for 5 days, so I may add more to this review later.
During the 7 month wait, I had thought about selling the truck almost immediately after taking delivery. Having driven the SUT for five days, it’s safe to say I’ll be keeping it. Here are some of my first impressions:
From what I can tell, the ride quality and drivability are almost identical to the 2003/4 SUVs – which I have only driven for a few minutes. To my surprise, the SUT handles as well as our ’03 Denali. Although the Denali obviously accelerates much faster, the SUT’s brakes are just as responsive. Steering is surprisingly light given the width and weight of the truck. Visibility is great for the most part, although small cars easily disappear behind the spare tire and high tailgate. Unlike the Denali, the SUT does not suffer from horrible IP bezel rattles. Although very subtle, I did notice some creaking coming from the midgate when turning onto an incline.
The Ebony interior looks great, and yes, there is still some plastic. However, the plastic doesn’t rattle, and in my opinion, it makes the interior feel a little more durable (and consequently less worrisome). The front seats are great, and the rear split bench provides plenty of support and comfort. The front seats must be moved forward in order to fold down the rear bench, but the front seats can then be moved back a few inches (once the bench has been folded down). As most of you know, XM Radio is finally available as an option on the Base and Adventure models and is standard on the Luxury model. The new touch screen navigation system provides easy access to song information when listening to XM Radio or FM stations using RDS. Although usually accurate, the navigation system sporadically failed to locate my vehicle twice while driving on the same major road. This seemed to be some sort of glitch, and thankfully it hasn’t occurred again. The GUI is straightforward, and the display is easy to read. At first glance, some 3rd party navigation systems seem more elegant and complete – namely products from Eclipse, Pioneer, and Kenwood. I have not had the system long enough to justify its replacement, but I look forward to testing this GPS system further.
The exterior tire mount is easy to use, and HUMMER was kind enough to place a rubber stopper on the mount in case you lower the tailgate before swinging out the carrier fully. Unfortunately neither the tailgate nor the tire mount lock, and it might be reasonably easy to steal the spare. Perhaps one of the coolest features of this truck is the bed-mounted air hose & 12V accessory outlets. The cargo compartment in the right side of the bed houses the jack, while providing extra room for the air hose and other small parts.
Despite a few minor complaints, this vehicle simply rocks. Great looks, innovative features, and cool gadgets make the SUT worth the expense. I cannot wait to test the truck offroad, where I am sure it will truly excel.

Mike O -
Since I haven't had much time to play with my truck at the dealership... does the XM continue to play when you have the NAV CD in? I am worried that I cannot have a map up while listening to music. Thanks for your review!

Shannon,
Yes, AM/FM/XM will continue to play while you are using the navigation DVD. You can even use the steering wheel controls and tuner to browse through stations while using the nav screen. As soon as I have time to take apart the dash and check out the back of the nav system, I will look into adding an external CD changer.
Thanks for the writeup Mike, it was a good read. The only question I have is - can you lock the tire carrier in the closed position?

So what does everyone think about the tire on the back? It looks out of place on the SUT. Don't take this the wrong way . I LOVE the look of the SUT and I will more than likely trade my 03 in or add another to the family eventually. how do you think the tire would look on a cage design up above the bed. the tire could mount horizontally and could be placed at roof level so you could still utilize the bed. in other words it would be as if it was mounted on the roof of your SUV in the back.
might look cool integrated into a full Gobi rack.

Mike,
Count me jealous.
Have you tried playing a DVD movie in the Nav?
I know this doesn't work on the 2004, but surprisingly I have tried on other brands of autos with Nav systems, and a DVD movie will play in a few...
Also - does the DVD-ROM for the Maps have to be inserted for the Nav to work?
I think the spare looks decent. The only thing that bothers me a little is the big gap between the carrier and the tailgate. It would look better if it was in closer.
Your rack idea sounds kinda ****ty http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I think the tire would look cool mounted in the bed at an angle, like the desert racing trucks. But you'd lose the use of the bed with that setup.
No spare might be cool:

hummer17 - Unfortunately the Nav system will not play DVD movies. Yes, the Nav DVD must be inserted in order to use the Nav. I do not believe the system can load your route into memory (allowing you to remove the Nav DVD), but I will check the manual later.
Dan - I don't think you can lock the tire mount. Here's a close-up shot:
http://www.elixant.com/h2sut/mine/DSC01602.jpg
You basically pull out the pin and lift up on that top black piece - no mention of a locking mechanism in the manual.

See if you can use a trailer hitch-locking pin! In lieu of the factory pin on the tire mount.
What does the small pin on the cable do? Does that larger horizontal pin have to come out to open it?
Mike O
06-23-2004, 06:27 PM
I will take another picture tonight, but no, that horizontal pin stays there. The small pin on the end of the metal cable slides into a hole on the horizontal pin to secure the mount in case it did not latch completely.

You need to park it in your neighbor's front yard to the right and on the boulder's in your neighbor's front yard to the left...
Actually, Dan, park your truck on the neighbor's driveway that is in your yard. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Since their driveway is in your yard, it's basically your driveway, right? And since that's the case, I would just start parking it in your new driveway...
That would be pretty funny. Actually, I might take a friend's suggestion and start parking my trash cans on it. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
