View Full Version : Jeeps are junk?

I'm sure it's only a matter of minutes before someone rips my head off, but here I go anyway.
Why do folks on this site like to tool on Jeeps?
I have both an H2 and a Rubicon, and I like both. They are two different vehicles. Both have been great military vehicles, both can go just about anywhere, both are fun to drive.
I don't want to sound like a "can't we all get along" pansie, but I don't get the animosity.
Can anyone explain this?

Ex-military vehicle sibling rivalry???

We're not "tooling" on Jeeps. We're just poking at them. I don't think anybody hates them. Like Mr. I-Man said, it's kind of like a sibling rivalry.

They're good -- -- we're just better.
There's no rivalry.

I love my H2 and my jeeps.....2 completely differnt vehicles. The jeep is great for tight trails.....my jeep has gone down some trails in central PA that I wouldn't even consider taking a H2 through...to big.

We can get along, but I love showing Jeep owners the diffrence when given the chance.
Do you guys think that H2 is better than Rubicon off-road??

I personally do not have an issue with Jeeps or the owners of Jeeps. I have had very bad luck with one wrangler that has left a poor taste in my mouth if anything. The company I work for has company are Jeeps, and they seems ok. What I have a problem with are the people I do not know that decide they need to come up to me and start talking in poor respect for me, and my truck. Not one have them have been a Jeep driver yet BTW.

I agree with Seth... I was trying to follow a friend in his Jeep a couple of months ago over a hill and thought I could squeeze around a rock he zipped past and now have "the gash" to remind me I couldn't...

You guys are poking fun at the Jeep Liberty. Granted, most Jeeps suck the big one...posers. However, i doubt that the Jeep Rubicon is one of them.
IMHO, i don't see the H2 being in the same class as the Rubicon in off-roading...size & weight alone put the Rubicon ahead. Then you add in Dana 44 solid axles front & rear with gear-based lockers (and rear gear-LSD) and it's not even a fair fight.
BTW, to be fair, i don't consider my G500 to be in the same class as Rubicon either. Rubi has the perfect size with a great off-roading powertrain (amazing crawl ratio, torquey engine)...it's made for off-roading, unlike our rigs, which compromises on-road and off-road ride.
My brother has a Rubicon. We went off-roading in CO last year...i did about 85-90% of the stuff that he went on...but i would not say that mine was better on anything. Sure, i had a more comfy ride with a better stereo system, but that's about it. Capability-wise, i don't see anything matching the Rubi on the trails. Modifications are cheap and just around the corner too!
On-road, anything can beat the Rubicon...but in off-roading, Rubis are in a class of one.
Toss-up in off-roading??!!http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Ok...we don't see the same thing then. I think that i will end here in this thread.
I would love too. I live near Houston. How about you guys??
Last month, i organized a small gathering and we off-roaded in Liberty TX. That was some crappy mud...damn acidic mud or something got on our paint!! It took a few weeks for it to disappear...weird stains!
Anyway, we had: my G500, Lexus GX470, 2 Rubicons, 2000 4runner, and Porsche Cayenne. Yes, a Porsche Cayenne!! We had fun.
Just keep me posted please. When's the next event??

Seth brings up the very weakness of the Rubi. It's short, tight wheelbase makes steep bumpy trails (Hell's Gate, Tip Over Challenge) particularly dangerous to it where the H2 has the wider and longer stance and can handle it comfortably. This is not to take away from the Rubicons' capability, it is that, but too put it in a class of one I give you my special "one". No way.
Dave
Ya know, last time i checked, Rubicons don't have much problems in Utah. Also, can a Rubicon make it across Hell's Revenge, etc.?? YES. Basically, Rubicon can pretty much go anywhere an H2 can...but the reverse is not true. And it's not just tight spots...just the fact that it has lockers front and rear puts it ahead of H2. Now, add in the ultra-sweet crawl ratio. There's no competition.
So, yes, it is in a class of it's own. I know that you guys love your H2 and think the world of it, but you guys need to be fair here. Rubicon is NOT a Jeep Liberty or Grand Cherokee.

I was being fair. I didn't say Hell's Revenge, I said Hell's Gate and I didn't say it couldn't do it, I said it was more dangerous in the Rubicon because of its short wheelbase and narrower stance. It's obvious you don't even want to give the H2 its due, so lets call a spade a spade. I'd rather go up Tip Over Challenge in an H2 over a Rubicon, lockers or not, just on the safety factor alone. Or how about Roaring Fork at Kinzalows? 3-4 feet of fast moving water just might sweep those sweet lockers out from under you.
Jeeps have their ground, we have ours. Accept it.
Dave
Dude, cool down. It's not that i don't give H2 their dues...remember, i said that the Rubicon is better than G-wagen in off-roading.
How reliable is a locker in the front of the H2?? Long term durability?
If i arrange something over the next month or so, then can you guys come with us??

Having a locker survive in any vehicle is up to the driver. I've seen many locked Dana 44's go boom because of bad driving technique. Did you think the D44 was initially designed with a locker? Noooo... Lockers came about out of need and want. Only recently did they start becoming options in current production vehicles. I think Pinzgauer was the first way back with its hydraulic lockers. Anyway, it gets tiring when fanboys simply won't acknowledge strengths in competitors or the weaknesses in their object of affection.

I've got nothing against Jeeps and I love wheeling with their owners. I think the Rubi has great offroad DNA and makes an incredibly capable platform but stock vs. stock it will not walk away from an H2. (assuming both have capable drivers)
Offroad: Yes, the front locker helps, the solid axle is a wash since it doesn't articulate well in stock form (obviously the capability is there though with additional suspension mods). 31 inch tires are weak.
The other 95% of the time: You're left with some big short comings. Where do you put the family? Gear, coolers, camping? How do I tow my boat? How do I take out clients in a 2 door? I'm 6'4", It feels like driving a go-cart.
The H2 just works better for me Overall!
If all you want is offroad performance, get a trail rig. For 6K you can get a baddass old Yota (I like 85 4Runners -last year of Solid axle, first year of fuel injection), CJ, K5 etc that will make the H2 and Rubicon look plain silly ofroad.
We can and do "get along". Come wheel with us. Bring your G500 or feel free to ride along with me. I'll show what an H2 is capable of.

I have to agree with Thai on a few things....My 97 tj with 5 1/2 of lift lockers and a ford 8.8 rear was a beast off-road....I've driven rubi's and they are pretty capable stock ( I prefer a little lift) The new longer wheel based rubi is what I would buy if I were in the market for a new jeep.

Is THAT why you come to an H2 Forum to try and justify your neighbor's Dodge G500? Your subtle but obvious stabs at the H2?
The members here can easily afford a Rubi. But why would most of us want to lose comfort, space, stability, looks, cargo, to name a few. Rubicon is nice but a different class. Don't compare.
BTW. If you wheel with the Texans, by the looks of it, you'll have to drop out when the gravel road ends.
Get us a REAL picture of your ride. Don't steal someone else's POS picture.

The picture is from Benzworld.org because your forum does not let me post big pictures (see my link below). So, i had to post them first on benzworld (which resizes automatically) and then link it here.
Here are some more pictures from my trip to Colorado:

As you can see, my G500 was stock when i did those Passes in Colorado in 9/04. I am pretty much still stock now except for new rims and tires.
DO YOU NEED ANY OTHER PROOF?? Kiss my a$$.
Since you're on Benzworld.org, why don't you do a SEARCH with my name, "Thai". http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Dodge G500?! What does Dodge have to do with G500?? G500 is military-grade and purely original with heritage. READ UP ON G500 before posting...please!
BTW, do you know where the H2 came from??!! Hint: CHEVY. Yeah, i am jealous of that "heritage."

Wow that’s some pretty fierce off-roading you were doing in your G-wagon, I never would have attempted the rocky-12-degree-hill-that-looks-like-my-neighbors-driveway obstacle. Maybe you can Photoshop it and show me the line you took incase I ever have to go to his house. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
As far as the H2's DNA (heritage as you call it) well it is still assembled by AM General. GM purchased the rights to use the 'Hummer' name, as well as provided their basic truck platform for the vehicle to be built off of, which was then modified heavily. Did most of the parks come from the GM Parts bin? Sure they did. Does that make the H2 an inferior vehicle because of it? Absolutely not.
Parts are parts. No matter who manufactures them, at some point someone has to make them. I fail to see the relevance of 'who makes the part' lets all laugh because most of the parts on your G say 'Daimler-Chrysler' on them.
Your G is a 2004 model, which is well after the Daimler-Chrysler merger. All of the engineering now (and since 2000) has been done in the United States, by Chrysler engineers. They are also the ones responsible the new mall-queen G-Wagon that’s going to replace the model you currently drive.
My point here is that a manufacture does not make a vehicle inferior solely because of their name. The main thing that makes any off-road vehicle a poor performer is an inexperienced driver.
I have been on off-roading trips where posers in HEAVILY modified Jeeps (yes some of them even Rubicon’s) failed to keep up with us after one or two obstacles. Likewise I have wheeled with folks who kept up with me fine in a Nissan Pathfinder with mud tires and a 4" lift.
See my point? It's not what you drive; it’s how you drive it. And yes I am educated and informed on the history and development of Hummers, all the way back to the HMMWV. But if you would like some reference material to educate yourself, there is a wonderful book available by clicking here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0760318638/ref=sib_dp_pt/002-0591110-4704041#reader-link)
PhilD,
Not sure if you are trying to be amusing or simply sarcastic. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif But stereotyping H2 owners into 2 catagories; bush buggy operators and "mall queens" is not doing H2 operators any justice. In fact it is playing into the hands of those tree hugging grads that think we should only commute by bus.

Thai-baby, you see. You can read all of the 4x4 magazines, pretend to know all you want to know. It all doesn't trump experience. Dana 44, crawl ratio, locker, solid axles........ All of that doesn't mean crap if it isn't packaged correctly. It is the sum of the parts that make a vehicle work, not the individual parts and to have one or two supposedly better components is not going to overcome other inherent bad designs. Wheeling it and testing is the way you determine, not spouting statistics and component names.
So, if one of us were to go to a G-wagon site and say that the H2 can wheel better than the G, you think the members of that site are just going to lay down and not say anything (even though it would be correct).

Phil is a really nice guy and would never intentionally stereotype or judge you.
I, (on the other hand) think you're a sniffling little whiner whose fishing for sympathy and attention. Maybe I'm wrong, but your track record of 10 lack luster posts has made me lose a several IQ points.
You'd better leave now so you don't miss your Lufthansa connection in Franfurt. Buh bye.
Well, my apologies Phil, I thought that those comments were sent from you.
However Longhornrockcrawler a.k.a Bovine prairie oyster fondler, I am not looking for attention nor am I a whiner. It is interesting to see that you have the ability to past judgment on someone without even knowing him. You need to understand that cow patties are not rocks regardless on how big they are.
Granted I am a new user of the forum. Big deal. So were you at one point. So what if I have asked others, opinions on certain items that interest ME. I could care less if they interest you or not. Non-traditional “Longhorn” breeding techniques do not concern me. By the way what size of a rubber boot do you wear anyways? For the record, I am here to exchange information that might prove helpful to me and possibly someone else. PERIOD. Being a clown like you with wiseass comments makes me think that your chewing tobacco has affected more then the color of your teeth, if you still have any.
You are unfortunately the exact stereotypical H2 owner that I do not want to be part of. You are the reason why some of us get cussed at; as some of the public see us H2 owners as don’t give a **** about anything kind of people. Thank God I do not live close to your inbred sorry ass as I can only imagine what reputation your mouth generates in PR for other local H2 owners.
By the way I can see that your knowledge of Germany is little to none. The name of the city is Frankfurt. Spend more time with your websters and less time sniffing gas and you might come off as something more then a person that survived Waco or was that Wacko?
I did not bring up any insults to H2...until one of your members insulted my ride.
As far as praising Rubicon, please re-read what i wrote.
In fact, did i even mentiion H2 vs. G500 until one of you guys mentioned it (and insult me in the process).
The only things that DC added to G-wagen were interior and stability control. Lockers, axles, and frame have been around for years...25 years to be exact.
If you go to JeepsUnlimited.com, then you will see that most off-roaders use the Rubicon as the starting point in their mods. If you were to buy the Rubicon-equivalent parts aftermarket, your Jeep will be MORE expensive than the Rubicon price. Price it out for yourself.
Paragon...so, are you saying that the Rubicon is not packaged right from the factory?? From what i hear, the Rubicon package is quite durable & reliable.
Sfox, doesn't Jeep have events for owners too?? As for H2 owners offroadig more than Jeep's, i doubt it. There is as much bling-bling H2 owners as G-wagen's. Jeep owners have forever held the title for highest percentage of off-roading among all manufacturers.
Again, i hate Jeeps...except the Rubicon, which i think is a great package. Like you guys, it's just not very appealing as an overall package for me to buy. My G-wagen is my daily driver, along with being my off-roading ride. I don't plan on putting Swampers or lift my G...because i also want durability, safety, and reliability. I just want a rig that will travel to most places (scenic places), like Utah & Colorado.

But, no, if that's what I wanted to say, I would have said that. I said what I said and I'll add to it. You spouted components and statistics in deference to experience. Simply put the vehicle as a whole is what matters. It's quite ignorant to argue that the rubi is better because it's smaller and can fit between two rocks. I mean, using that logic, an ATV would be a better option. The point that many have tried to make is that the stance of the H2 provides more stability than the rubi in many situations. Not many here are knocking the rubi nor are suggesting that the H2 "beats" the rubi in every wheeling situation but you are a G-wagon owner arguing about the rubi in an H2 forum and you don't have the experience to make the argument. So, I guess, why are you here arguing?

I could not agree with you more. The use of the truck is entirely up to the purchaser. I further agree that some of the mods such as 24 inch rims certainly imair my ability to go wheeling in the back 40. However I nder purchased the vehicle for that. I use my atv and argo for that purpose. But again to each his own.
I just think that the use of such discritptives can be expected from someone who dislikes the H2. However I would have hoped that all H2 owners share a common interest in that they enjoy their vehicle regardless of the purpose the purchased it for. To pigeon hole a vehicle because of a few modifications such as the application of 24" rims and call it a mall queen I think is a bit much. I take harsh words towards our President as highly offensive.
Firstly, I made the comment to Phil not you. So understand your place here. I understand Phil's comment was not directed at me and never suggested such.
The point that I am trying to make is rather then divide and conquer, H2 owners should be united in the love of the vehicle and not catagorize the vehicle into sub-catagories. Nothing more nothing less.
As for my complex, the only one I am starting to have is understanding why some GI Joe wanna be like you sticks his nose into my comment to another person.

As for my H2 lets get it straight, is it a princess or a queen. Since it is a year old, maybe lets stick with the princess.
With respect to your comment about wheeling, I can only say if you enjoy it, then great. Wheeling has nothing to do with being a man or not. In fact I can argue that you are trying to prove yourself in the hills as you obviously have not in society.

I find it hard to believe that you even own a Hummer. Are you sure your not some tree hugging troll attempting to use wit to get people fired up? And failing quite horribly at it.
If not then perhaps you need a thorough psychological evaluation, as typically people who trash Bush are tree hugging eco-nazi's, who drive little Prius' and cry and hold hands everytime a Hummer even passes them.
Have any pictures of your ride?

See there you go again trying to pigeon hole everyone here. I never signed a Republican party membership card when I took ownership of my H2. If I had to, then I wuld be driving a VW bus, maybe.
I have a great 2004 H2. Love it. Not a tree hugger eventhough we have many more trees up here to hug then where you probally live. Just don't like GW or his father.
The point is I do not have to live in the US to be an American. I do not have to love the Republican party, GW or GW SR. to be an American.

"I was born in 64, so guess you need to think again."
"Everyone can speak what the feel. I think that this is most evident. What a great place we all live to be able to sound off and say what we want to say."

Dennis, it's cool by me. I certainly did not mean to stir the pot THIS much.
Remember, i was stock at the time of the trip. I certainly do not want to try anything "Difficult" rated. But, if you're familiar with Colorado Passes, then you would know that some of the Passes i went thru are moderate levels...not bad for a SUV on highway (actually high-performance) tires!
Can the G- wagen do more? I am sure...but i was not going to test the limits (or even come close) when i still need a vehicle to drive 1000 miles back to home. Like i said earlier, i do not intend to make my G-wagen into an off-roading monster...it has to be comfy for daily driving too. Thus, i did not come into this thread raving how my G-wagen is better than H2 or H1.
But, to answer your questions, i do know something about off-roading.
Thai.
