I carry it out back on a factory carrier.
I keep thinking about taking it off, but I know that if I do within a week I'll need it.
Better safe than sorry.

DTRY...Is that because of offroading, road trips or what? I've been toting mine around for 1-1/2 yrs in town and just put it in the garage this weekend. I'm not into rockcrawling, yet, and I do carry a SUV fix-a-flat. I'm also thinking about getting the rear tire carrier. Your thoughts?
I carry the spare on my Manik rack on top. It's completely out of the way and I still have it just in case I need it because I off road all the time. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I keep the spare in the garage, have for a couple of years now. I carry a big can of fix-a-flat. I've been on several long trips and havn't missed it, luckily. However I'm more than like going to buy a rear tire carrier in the near future as I will be traveling long distances more often.

Thanks for the input. That's my concern. I'm planning on some traveling and somehow just think I should have spare tire. Don't worry about it running around Vegas. But I also have a couple BIG dogs in the back so no inside spare tire. I'm looking at the one kacyk bought from GStyle. Price is right and looks like a nice clean application. Opps..forgot the pic of one of my "kids"

I just like having the spare handy... just in case. It doesn't do me any good in the garage.
Plus, I like the idea of the extra econo catbox hood killer back there too. Who knows, I might get lucky and bounce one of those Honda Element Outhouses off into the weeds with it.

Hmmmm. Hadn't thought of the hood killer aspect. Ordered mine last night. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Hummer roadside assistance won't cover you if you don't have your spare with you. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Since the aerodynamics of the H2 are not exactly state of the art, I put mine on top. Besides, if you have one of those racks for the back, you have to open it EVERYTIME you want to put groceries in the back! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Then you get all dirty everytime you touch it, yeah, I'll never have to use it if I have it, so it's on top. Then I don't even really see it. Besides, I like the Merlin Perkins look. I take video while Jim wrastles the Anaconda. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I have the rear carrier. Works great and has afforded me protection when I was rear ended. I was hit by a minvan. The minivan had extensive front end damage and had to be towed away. I was hit on the tire. The cover had a 1/4 inch tear in it, otherwise I had no damage. I was stopped at a light and the wonman that hit me said "I never even saw you". Go figure.
The spare is usually in the garage. Last time I had it in the truck I almost backed over a little old lady at the grocery store. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I couldn't see her at all. After I apologized for being stupid, she told me my truck was beautiful. I guess that's because she didn't see the dirty undercarriage. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

mine is on back w/ a SMA tire carrier...a little annoying when the dig gets in and out, and when loading stuff, but wouldn't let that over shadow the gain in cargo capacity and the look, whihc i actually preffer

I always carry mine, rear tire carrier. I don't want it taking up room in the garage, plus I like the way it looks on the truck. I can't see squat at the back, but it hasn't bothered me any.

I do not carry mine unless I am going on a trip. If I take it to the beach, I strap it to the roof.
I have carried mine on the rear tire carrier for 2 years with out incident. Two weeks ago I hit a piece of metal in the road, and distroyed a brand new tire, put a 4 inch slice on the side wall. I was glad I had the spare.

I never leave home with out it http://archeryproshop.com/newwebl.jpg
I took the spare tire out as soon as i got the truck. It was taking up to much space and visibility. I have traveled from maine to florida for the past two years and havent needed it. I'm leaving for vacation again in feb and think i better bring it. I have 60,000 miles on the original tires . Does anyone know of a simple roof carrier out there? I also have the luggage box mounted on the roof which makes it a little more tight for space. Thanks Doug

Doug,
I have the SMA carrier and it seems to work OK. I also have a Gobi but my wifey likes the SMA look better.

You "strap it to the roof"? Do you lift it up there yourself? Holy Crap!! Please include a photo of that.

Yes I did it myself. I won't be doing it again until we go to the beach in June. I put it on the roof behind the rear roof rail. You have to move the rail forward a little. I also have a Kanga roof pouch to stuff with all the vacation beach garbage. We stay in North Carolina on the outer banks. You have to drive up the beach 10 miles to get to the house. During high tide it can be rough because you have to drive in the soft sand and there is many ruts. Come to think of it, I do have pics from last year with the tire on top. I'll post them when I get back.

Received my rear tire carrier yesterday & installed last night. Easy install & no drilling. Very quality product & cost effective @ $740 total for carrier & cover including shipping. Thanks to kacyk for putting me on to this product. Here's some pics & do you think people get the idea where NOT to park at my office. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I also have the rear tire carrier in the back, i think it's made by sma. the dealer installed it when new so i thought it was the original one the whole time until one day i was washing the rig and saw a little "SMA" label on the bottom of the vinyl cover http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif i like the looks of it but like others have said, it gets old everytime i want to open the back and i have to swing wide open the carrier first. Also, i have to grease that "t" bar or else it gets very difficult/sometimes impossible to open. Now i get grease all over myself every now and then http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Yeah, i've seen the new ones with the latches but i am really thinking about getting the gobi racks and have the spare up in the roof instead.
My only concern is how heavy does the stock wheel & tire weights? Has anyone actually weight one before? I am sure for some lifting it is no problem but i am not exactly the physically fit type http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I carry mine all the time on a SMA carrier. Yes it is a pain to swing that thing open all the time but I will put up with it for the security of having a spare. I would love to put it on the roof but my garage won't allow the fit. The big pain is parking on a side slope where the carrier wants to swing back closed. Like having a gun: "Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."

the tire and wheel are 95lbs.

The weight of the tire and wheel are not bad. I've gotten mine in and out of my truck several times. It's just very awkward - there's really no place to get a secure grip. Which really sucks if your hands slip and you're on a sloped driveway. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

So you mean your rig actually fits in your garage http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I've tried folding down those roof lights and it still won't fit. And my rig is absoutely stock height wise http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Good point, no grip huh... i wasn't sure if i should get the ladder or not but i guess you've just helped me decided http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Speaking of sloped driveway, does anyone has problem with their front doors not able to hold it's own weight? On mine, even at a very slight incline, the doors will come right back at you if i don't hold on to it. Just like how rifle was saying about parking on a side slope and the carrier wants to swing back closed. I've tried 3 dealerships and none were able to fix this http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif They've replaced the this black sliding bar thingy twice and tightened whatever chinga ling ding in the doors but still the same. The rear doors are fine, just the front driver & passenger door http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

My front passenger door has that problem. All the other doors seem fine. I've just learned to deal with it.
As for the tire carrier, there's an easy solution to that. You can lower your hatch just slightly to catch the tire edge...that will hold the carrier in place and should still give you enough head room under the lifted hatch.

I don't mean to sound like a know it all, but that doesn't look to secure up there. I'd hate for it to fly off if you had to hit the brakes or something happened and it came off.

I bought 2 XTC's for the front and back. 1 week after Jason delivered, the cockmonkeys came out with a new rear light design http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif. But I still love em. I see you have a set on order.

Yes my H2 fits in a std 7 ft garage. Watch out for the rear froof rack- I positioned mine forward of the the rear axle because the of the slight lip frome the drive and the garage floor. If you hit the bump a bit too fast it may "touch" the garage-like it does at my vacation house. Also if your H2 does not clear, make sure it isn't the bottem of your garage door-if it does, adjust the travel to pull it up toward the opener more. Thanks for the tip on the rear hatch for the tire carrier.
