View Full Version : HUMMER Hatred - Are they envious? Jealous?
MisterMark

I've been thinking about getting an H3, but in doing research online, I'm amazed by the amount of hatred that so many seem to have for the HUMMER brand.
I imagine that most owners learn to ignore them, but what do you think causes such knee-jerk reactions? Is it envy? Jealousy? Or maybe HUMMER is just an easy target for people to vent their frustrations. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Jealousy, misinformation and easy target are all appropriate answers.

I think that the brand and models are so different that it makes them for an easy target.
If you look at the facts: most people complain that they are gas guzzlers; although in reality they are no worse and even better on gas milage than some other brands like Jeep for one.
But they dont want to listen to this and continue to hate, so for me I dont care. If you are so close minded to think this way with out knowing the facts I dont care to know you anyway. In fact driving a Hummer keeps the idiots away from your social life in some sense.

Well I won't have one until the fall when the 2007’s are out but I would enjoy a confrontation from one of these ignorant do-gooder, tree huggers who like to bash the H3 just because it’s a Hummer.
I'm all for protecting the environment but when these morons target the Hummer and specifically the H3 over all of the other giant SUVs and gas guzzling trucks, they are ill-informed and uneducated and it will be time to lay the smack down on them. This I will enjoy.
On the other hand, if my soon to be H3 is ever the victim of vandalism, I will go nuts.

I'm not caring because I'm not seeing the hate. Here in Silicon Valley the H3 is well liked by all.

ufcjeff, I'm thinking the same thing about vandalism.
But actually, I have to admit that I enjoy the idea of pissing off the automotive-holier-than-thou types. I just didn't realize that I had it in me until I started reading some of their rants, which have me wanting a HUMMER even more than before. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is from one of about a gazillion sites that bash the HUMMER brand:
The Hummer's basic statement is: "**** you". Hummer's own market research shows that the typical Hummer buyer is vain, insecure, self-centred and has little concern for the consequences of his or her actions on others.
The overall yuppie four-wheel drive attitude to safety is also "**** you". The basic idea is: "I'm bigger than you, so if we have a scrap, you're going to come out second best."
After I read this, I thought, "Well, hell yeah! This is the truck for me!" http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My opinion, who gives a flying F**k what someone says about the vehicle you drive. Most people are too ignorant to know the fuel mileage of any vehicle. I had neighbors in TN who thought I should drive my Jeep TJ more than my Vette since according to them, the Jeep had to get better mileage. (Jeep 16, Vette 28 highway.)
They never believe me when I told them the Vette was my economy car, and I didn't care then, and I don't care now. My basic answer is, "f**k off," and the older I get, the easier those words flow from my mouth. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I may drive a Hummer, and a Vette (when it is running), but I live in a house that is totally energy star rated. Not just all of the appliances and furnace, but every light bulb in this frigging place is fluorescent (they take a while to turn white), and the place is to dang tight I have to open the doors in the winter to get some airflow.
I bet most of the people driving those little fuel misers have a thousand lights on at one time, all incandescents, and leave their porch lights on all night because they are afraid of the Bogey man. (Me, I sleep with a SIG under my bed http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, but it is in the dark.)
RANT over....
I've been given lots of hate, but don't really care. I've never had a death threat, so they're up until now harmless. Hopefully I'll never be shot by some gangsters or an angry tree hugger.
Most hippies are oblivious to facts and common sense. They simply go with whatever they hear at the local "Pot for Peace" rally. When idiots gather, bad things happen. Though I now have grown quite leary of the current establishment! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Personally, I think driving something like the H1, H2, and to an extent the H3 isn't the cafefree, F-YOU drive most hippies think it is. I mean, if I hit one of their econoboxes, I might just climb up over the hood and roll. And when that jerk pulls out in front of me in his oil-burning '70's Ford Fiesta or Toyota Echo, I have to hit the brakes, because I know that he won't survive the impact. I would hate to bloody the bumper. With great power comes great responsibility.
But then again, Mooses fear my 7-slot grille, road debris and rocks easily clear the underbody, most impactors will probably just leave scratches, and very few roads are left impassible.
However, pedestrians have yet to figure out that a oncoming Hummer is not something to step out in front of. I guess Darwinism will solve that one.

you never appreciate how thick people can be until you enlist. much of it is herd mentality i think, but alot of it isn't so much ignorance, its just that some people absolutely have to have something to discriminate against to either bolster or to justify their place in their social establishemnt perhaps its also to have another thing to be right about, feeding their ego's ergo they do no research (so in a way ignorance I guess)... after the initial frustration wears off... they end up getting my sympathy... how much would that bring the suck to live in fear of the environment collapsing, the bugs in meat, getting melanoma from too much sun, deet in insect repellant... I know someone whom locks the doors at all times... even when they go to take out the trash. its just gotta suck to live like that.

Just have all the haters you run into that complain about how Hummers are killing the environment read this article (http://elcova.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/6916043161/m/9181086071/r/9181086071#9181086071) http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I love this section the best http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
For example, while the industry average of all vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2005 was $2.28 cents per mile, the Hummer H3 (among most SUVs) was only $1.949 cents per mile. That figure is also lower than all currently offered hybrids and Honda Civic at $2.42 per mile.

Excellent article. Thanks for the link.
As I was reading it, I was thinking, "Someone should send this to Arianna." And then I saw the last post which said, "Something please forward this to...Arianna Huffington."!
Apparently, she's been a success at establishing herself as the hybrid queen. The funny thing is that most of the time she has herself chauffeured around Southern California in a Lincoln Town Car. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

So far I have found that most reactions to the hummers are positive, smiles, thumbs up an people saying cool Hummer. The only negative things I've seen so far was a hippie in a SMART car shaking his head and finger at me whilst stopped at a red light.. and the ribbing I get daily from my boss for buying a "soccer moms" Hummer http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Yeah......so I do live in Kansas, however if you were to come visit the part of the city I reside in; it wouldn't be what most people had in mind. The greater Kansas City area, (shared with the show me state as well), is a great place to live, and has just as much to offer, if not more, than the more popular larger cities. JO stand for Johnson County, and Overland Park is in JO. It's where all the money is at and people here let everyone else know this. Trust me on this one! It's been that way for years. I really don't buy into it....I just enjoy living here. That being said......I get more snotty comments from my plates than my vehicles.....so HummerNewbie is right. I've just learned to ignore them. It can be expensive to live in JO and that's the root for all the stereotyping that follows JO inhabitants. I just realized that while I'm actually traveling in JO, I don't get many looks at ALL. Usually always happens if I cross over to another county or the state line....which are all within 10 miles of JO.

Overland Park was ranked #1 city to live, #1 city to work and #1 city to raise a family, in the US. Big reason why Sprint moved their world headquarters there. It is by far a better place to live than Orlando and someday I will probably move back there.

It is expensive to live there but I have never been anyplace in the US that is overall as nice as JO. Every place has nice areas but not usually an entire county like JO. Doesn't hurt that the two school districts in the county always rank in the top three in the nation. At least they used to.

Ok.....so how ironic is it that this thread was started......I respond that I've not encountered anything negative.....and then...."an incident" this afternoon after I get off work happens?
I'm driving to Raymore, MO with a fellow employee to do some shopping, and I'm sitting at a red light waiting to make a left. A guy in a white Galant pulls up to make a right......has plenty of time to make his turn, but pusposely stops......I look over and he makes a gesture with his hand as if his stroking his dick. He then spits on the inside of his own window, and then makes his turn. What a complete ****ing moron! It was so surreal, I was stunned. My friend and I looked at each other; for about a minute........and I say to him "What the HELL was that?".........we just laughed. Was I suppose to be hurt? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Man......I tell ya. Not sure about some people. He was seriously pissed off that I was driving a Hummer. Even before I was an owner, I would see the H2's and the H3's and just think "Cool".

A great bumper sticker that should come on every Hummer (or at least optional).

And notice that they're currently sold out of that bumper sticker. It's obviously appealing to a lot of people. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I imagine that most owners learn to ignore them, but what do you think causes such knee-jerk reactions? Is it envy? Jealousy? Or maybe HUMMER is just an easy target for people to vent their frustrations. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
San Francisco, California, USA Just remember, you live in one of the most liberal armpits of America. Your truck will always be a target there. Buy it... Do NOW! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The words "liberal" and "armpit" don't belong together, in my opinion. I happen to be a true liberal, as in Libertarian, which means I believe in maximum freedom for the individual. Unfortunately, many liberals in America today want to see lots of restrictions placed on how we live our lives - just as many conservatives do.

I had my first encounter last night. I was at the store waiting to park. A lady and her 12 yr old son walk in front of me to get to their car. Now- the lady can see that I'm waiting to park in the spot right next to her. What does the b**** do? She looks RIGHT AT ME, smiles at me and sticks her damn cart right in the middle of the spot I'm waiting to park in. I figure not a big deal. I pull up beside the parking spot- move the cart (this whole time I can hear her son saying "I'm sorry. I told her not to put the cart there"), I get back in the H3, back up and start to pull in. I get about halfway in and the b**** starts flooring her car driving right at me. So since I can see that she's being an idiot- I stop. She gets about 1/2 inch from my front passenger side, hops out of her car and starts bitching at me. "What the f***'s your problem lady? you think that because you drive a hummer you can do anything you want?" I look at her like ok psycho let's see....Then I tell her-first- YOU intentionally put the cart right where I'm waiting to park and then YOU try to hit me. And I'm the one with a problem? I'd have gotten outta my H3 but my hubby is very non confrontational and he could see that I was extremely pissed off at the lady....so he proceeds to stand right by my door. The part that pisses me off the most- My hubby tells the woman we're sorry. I say very loudly with the sunroof and every other window open "I'm not f****** sorry. I didn't do a damn thing". Then I asked the lady if she'd like me to shove the cart up her ass. She got in her car and drove away.
Damn people anyway. I wasn't even doing anything wrong! I was just trying to park!

He was ahead of us in a van.
The jerk only gave us the finger about 7 or 8 times http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
