Offroad Capabilities

hey, i got my h3 a couple of months ago and i wasnt planing to do any off roading so i got the base model.

However, after reading all the posts about off roading and all that stuff, im thinking i wana get into it. I have never offroaded before, i guess the closest thing to offroading that i have done is the other day i climbed a 8 inch curb in front of home depot.

Anyways, my question is this. Since i do not have the rear locker, what can i do off road and what cant I do? what are my limitations compared to you guys with lockers?

As for the tires, i can go bigger if needed, but the locker is the only thing i am missing.

Oh and is there any way to have a rear locker installed?

Try surfing through the Events section and the Offroading section. Then see if you can connect with others from your area. Mostly they are good with N00bs.

Congrats! I used to live in Lake County IL about 15 minutes drive to Wisconsin. But I don't recall any trails Offroad park around the area, all flat!. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The base model is still very capable and the guys I've been out with that have them haven't gotten stuck yet. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

And yes you can add the rear locker although I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet on the H3.

there is a surprising amount of skill involved with off-roading. So as you get the experience you probably won't get stuck as much. Just make sure you have someone with you when you go out and have a good strap and couple quality shackles... You will still have a great time... its always more about who your out with than how difficult the trail is.

A good friend of mine has the base H3 without locker. They added good tires and they can wheel better than most. Your truck will do lots. Go out and get your truck dirty. I have wheeled with that person too and the base model did great. I know that with the change in tires to the BFG A/T KOs the base model went places that the adventure with stock tires couldn't do.

As all the others have said, the H3 base is very capable off-road but more specifically without the rear locker, you can not take advantage of certain obstacles that benefit from a locker. Like in the picture - the wheels will come off the ground and why do you need power on a wheel that has no traction the locker will pull you thorough obstacles with power to only one wheel.

Go out and drive it.

Get out an walk thru a tuff spot to see where you are going to put your wheels or how deep the water/meud sand is.

If you get hung up on something or a wheel starts spining, get out and look underneath to see what is happening and why.

Sometimes it is better to keep one vehicle in a good spot while the other is going through the tuff spot incase you have to pull it out or go for help and parts.

Learn the low spots of the H3 like where the shock mounts and rear diff is etc. (best to do in the driveway rather than in the mud)

Go with anther vehicle and bring a tow strap and jack and shovel.

Let some air out of your tires and have some fun.

If you realy like it then you can up grade yours or get your next H3 with the Adventure pack.
