View Full Version : Dick Durbin on Hummers

Just ran across this in an article in the Weekly Standard. In an analysis of his widely publicized statements on Gitmo is this gem delivered last week:
--- snip ---
The uproar which had not abated since Tuesday continued to swell, with more and more active-duty military and their family expressing their contempt for the Democratic whip.
Durbin was apparently unaware of the depth of his problem early on Thursday, because he began the day as a participant in the debate on the energy bill, and delivered another clue to his mindset:
People drive these Hummers. Have you seen them? I personally think if you want to drive a Hummer, you ought to join the Army. But people want to buy them, want to go on the road, and get five or six miles a gallon. And Detroit keeps churning these big, heavy cars. Well, from my point of view, we ought to step back and say as a nation, "Isn't it worth something for us to have more fuel-efficient vehicles so we don't get drawn into foreign conflicts over oil? Is it more important to me to drive a sensible car, and to spare someone's son or daughter from serving in the military, in the Middle East in a war?"
--- snip ---

What an idiot. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
And only in America are you going to find As$holes like that questioning our interrogation techniques and treatment over there at Gitmo. I have a feeling that if any of our citizens got there hands on Prisoner # 063, the 20th hijacker due for the PA plane, the little coward would be worried about more than listening to Christina Aguilera over and over. We are so tame! and who provided the Koran that we supposedly flushed down the toilet?

I just bought my first Hummer, Red lux H3, and I served in the Navy. Why don't these idiots who complain have their daughters or sons serving. Lead by example. Sorry, my 2 cent rant.

Hey Dick(head)! I did 25 years in the military and drove hummers from the moment they hit the field. But wait a minute. . .I'll bet my service probably doesn't qualify me, in your mind, to drive one in retirement. In fact, I'l bet you consider retired military to be Nazis, Stalinists, or Pol Pot wannabes as well.
What a moron. . .clearly his own first name is always on the tip of his tongue (if not half way down his throat).
By the way. . .he graduated from HS in '62, college in '66, and law school in '69. Wonder what his excuse was for not serving in the military. As I recall, there was a draft. Guess he found a way to have someone else serve in his place so he wouldn't have to associate with "nazis."

Classic Stupidity. Anybody know the license number to his small-d**k prius...I'd like to show him what a Hummer doing 5-6 miles per gallon can do to his POS car... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Let's see....gas peddle about 85% to the floor for 5-6 MPG right? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Should I put it in 4-lo or 4-hi?
We do need to get off of foreign oil, and Detroit needs to try to find ways to make more efficient cars. It's possible to have the best of both worlds...Power and Efficiency..........Okay, this where everybody gets mad at me for having a another perspective.

There's nothing in what you said that would make me mad. . . unless you want to add a section defending the idea that the US Forces at Gitmo are running a torturous nazi murder camp because the guards were screwing around with the temperature control on the friggin' AC in a prisoner's cell. . .
Durbin's comments have been quoted extensively on Al Jezera. . .I don't know that what he did makes it to the level of treason, but the same a-holes that are defending this screamed and hollered until Trent Lott was removed as Majority Leader for saying nice (if somewhat stupid) things to an old man at a retirement party. Trent Lott -- Too bad, Stomm, that you weren't elected president. Dickless Durbin -- If I didn't tell you he was describing Americans, you'd think this was nazis, soviets, or Pol Pot. Where's the outrage now??

We should be spending 10 cents a gallon on oil that we're importing from the United States of Iraq as far as I'm concerned. But I wasn't in charge so it didn't go my way.
Incidentally, one of the main reasons isn't that we can't get the stuff, it's that we can't refine enough of it fast enough, which is why the prices go up, which slows consumption. A shadow government thing, I'm sure.

So true, we haven't built a refinery since the 1970's. We still need to get off the oil, I think it's suppose to run out in 2050.
FreeorDie2- I don't listen to either side anymore. Durbin compared the prison camp to a nazi camp, Rick Santorum called democrats nazis for holding up the judges, Howard Dean criticized the white christian republican party, Dick Cheney told a Senator to go F**K himself on the senate floor. Trent Lott said america would be better with Strom Thurmond as president. Robert Byrd was a Grand Wizard of the KKK. Both sides are messed up, they just use this to pit people against each other. Divide and Conquer baby!

It is certainly your right to look at things that way. And all the items you cited were valid examples of behaviors that could be criticized (though personally, I admire Cheney for telling Leahy to eF himself -- at least Cheney has the balls to look a guy in the eye when he says something).
On the other hand, throwing up one's hands and saying "a pox on both their houses" increases the chances that you will end up getting screwed. Whatever your politics, I think the best way to go is support the folks who most closely align with your views. In my case, it's the people who I think will leave me alone the most. . .who will rifle through my wallet and not take all the large bills. . .who will not try to stop me from driving the vehicle I want to drive, etc.
Before you throw up your hands too far, just remember that allowing politicians to have their own way got us toilets that don't flush.
Now. . back to H2s and lurking. . .
