Okay, so I am the very first on the block (or anywhere else, thank you GOBI) to have GOBI's new recovery loop step device. It was a bit harder to install than expected, due to my SMA tire carrier, but it is VERY cool.
It merely bolts to the existing rear recovery loop(s), and then enables the loop to sit in a horizontal position as a step when needed. It is much lower than the bumper, yet higher than the hitch, so it does not impede the departure angle.
I will post pictures of it this week, since I know we'll have the camera out for an off road trip.

To add some engineering geek speak to this - the T bar you see in the picture is movable to a vertical position (allowing the rear hook to lie down in it's normal position) or you can rotate it to a horizontal position (as pictured) where the hook rests upon the T section - thus creating the "step".
Tried this on Adam's rig today - and WOW, very very cool. The bumper is just too high for a first step (especially for old guys like Alec), so this really creates a great first step that is easily reachable.
Hey Sandra - if that is not a glowing review I dont know what is - now can I get one for FREE http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif !

I was at GOBI today doing some computer work for them - saw a few of the step devices lying around. I have to go back again tomorrow to deliver a PC - I'll ask about availability and pricing.
If I can get Sandra and Paul distracted for a minute or two I'll swipe a couple and sell them to the highest bidder here - Bidding starts at $500! LOL
On a serious note - I will ask about timeframes for the official release.

What the..... I thought I was supposed to be the first to get the new GOBI stuff.(first stealth rack, first aluminum fairing for the stealth racks).
Sandra and Paul,
Did I offend you somehow?

It could have been you, Alan. They brought the thing to the dinner you missed. Apparently, they have newer and better ones.
Personally, I think Paul wanted to find out how hard it was to install it on a vehicle with the spare tire carrier, without having to actually do it.
Believe me, it was pretty hard.

Why was it so hard? Didn't you take the swing arm out of it's receiver? Not trying to be a smart ass just curious.

You may be a smartass, anyway, but you're right. However, there was no way I could lift it out without removing the tire, then the arm, then remounting everything (receiver, shackle, GOBI step), putting the swing arm in place, tighten everything down, and put the tire back on. It was just more than I bargained for after seeing the folks at GOBI install one on one of their SEMA show trucks without a tire carrier on the back.
