What Size Trailer Hitch ???

OK,

I got the trailering package on one of my H-3's and now I need to buy the hitch and ball.

The question is I see hitches that are straight, and others with 2", 4" & 6 " drops and (BALLS) of different sizes {can't wait for the answers i,m gona get on this}...

Which is the most common if I only want to buy one to start (asking about hitch: straight or drop & ball size)?

I don't want to buy the MULTI/ADJUSTABLE hitch,
$150 seems to much to pay...

Straight or 2" drop most common. Small trailers(no trailer brakes) use 1 7/8 ball, medium trailers(with trailer brakes) use 2" ball, badass trailers(with bigger trailer brakes) use 2 5/16" ball. Start off with the straight insert with a 1 7/8" ball and go from there. ball size is stamped on the trailer coupler.

Wait and buy the hitch/ball that fits your trailer with the trailer level. You're wasting your money to buy before then. It's no big deal, the hitches and balls are everywhere. I've only ever pulled 2" and 2 5/16" . Anything requiring at 2 5/16" ball is too big for the H3 so don't even bother.

I have a 2" ball with a 3.5" drop and trailers that I pull (snowmobile trailer and a multi-purpose steel trailer, both single axle) tilt away from the H3. I would get a 6" drop and by both the 1 7/8" & 2" balls along with wrenches to interchange them. Don't wait 'til you get the trailer. You got the H3 before you really had to ford a 24" deep stream didn't you? Don't forget a pin lock.

X2 Depends on what trailer you are getting.
My trailer for our boat requires a 2" ball
can't use a smaller ball or a bigger ball.
You need to know what kind(s) of trailer(s)
you are going to use and buy appropriately.

Hey, I'm just speaking from experience here. I've got a big pintle hook hitch I've only used once and about three others that I never use because they don't have the right drop. Why waste money?

You really only have one choice and that is to wait until you have the trailer and choose the drop than.

If you didn't know your shoe size you wouldn’t go out and buy a pair of sneakers until you did right?

Seriously though, what kind of trailer are you thinking of and what are you going to be hauling? I'm in somewhat the same situation. i got rid of my truck bed and now i'm concerned with all the crap i have to haul. like 2x4's and 4x8sheeting and all kinds of building materials. Well, i used to. now i'm pretty much done with the house and need somethingto haul http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. wish my wife would let me get a 4 wheeler so i could get a trailer and tow it around http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.
I think you want the trailer to sit level to the ground when it's loaded. load should be centered over the axle. if you have too much load at the front, tounge weight?, then you'll have problems. all the load on the tounge will drag your ass end down and towing will be difficult and dangerous. someone help me out here if i'm full of s*&t. I think you can tow, safely, a weight comparable to your vehicle, H3 roughly 4800lbs?
