This is funny chit.......Broken tie rod incident.....

"I am pretty sure that that video was taken on the Big Sluce on the Rubicon Trail. I've seen well built CJs and FJs with broken axles, broken chassis, steering boxes ripped out of the chassis, stripped gears, and even a transmission and transfer cases that split in half from the hammering!!

To get to that point on the trail that H2 would have gone through a LOT of abuse. I did the trail in a STOCK Range Rover, and it is a tough trip, so much so that a British magazine published a story about our trip when they heard bout it. (Land Rover World, April98) We bent tie rods many times on the trail. My guess is that it was already damaged from repeated blows. That's why one of the first things that truck owners do is to significantly upgrade their tie rods.

Taking any stock vehicle on that trail is insanity. (yes, Jeep does it, but with lots of spare parts, support vehicles, mechanics, and later in the year after it has been smoothed out from previous adventurers.

Also, even if I am wrong about the trail, the wildly spinning tire grabbed on the rock and put a LOT of pressure on that wheel. Letting a tire spin like that is a no-no for experienced off-roaders, and WILL lead to damage. The mark of a novice, (or an experienced off-roader with a split second of brain fade that we all get sometimes.) Abuse like that is like taking your econo box, revving it to 6000 rpm, and dumping the clutch over and over, then wondering why the trans, axle, or clutch failed.

Nope, that H2 was doing pretty good. It was just a bit of driver error. And yes, a heavy duty tie rod might have not broken. But, the tie rod and tie rod end is about the easiest thing to repair. Think of it as the fuse in the link, and if it is overbuilt, then instead of the tie rod you will break steering boxes, rip steering boxes out of the chassis, break stub axles, snap off steering arms, etc."

You can get an Outback up to the top of Bill Moore easily, but I certainly wouldn't take one on that boulder field shortcut where Alec's famous video was taken.

I happen to know for a fact that the driver was indeed on Big Sluice on the Rubicon, broke the tie rod and kept wheeling. He had air suspension and manually adjusted it so that only 3 tires were on the ground. He was limping around to find a flat, easy spot to change the tie rod and ended up at Bill Moore Lake, only about 1000 miles. Upon finding the good area to change the tie rod, he realized he didn't have a spare and had to walk all the way back down to the little Jeep roads and get a ride with a Jeeper to town to get a replacement rod.

I ran Rubicon after the TC failed. You fools thought I was still at the Gonzo. Hell no! I drove too damn far not to head on over and cruise through the rubi. Just like a Sunday drive, Baby.
