Yee HAW! I just got my soldier.:D

It only takes a couple of weeks. They have to call and confirm your identity and such. I got mine this morning.

It is a great program. You can either become a penpal or adopt one. When you adopt you write weekly letters and send a monthly care package. We did it as a family. I am really excited. They have a list of stuff you can send. Mine will be deployed until 7/07 so he will be there for the holidays.

Anyone that has served before have any suggestions?

He is 26, married and is in aviation support. I'm thinking games and snacks and stuff and of course many thanks. Any suggestions would be awesome.

For the most part you hit it pretty good with games, snacks, magazines, old books just stuff like that. Tobacco products are always a winner. Homemade snacks like cookies will not lose you any points. Offering to be a friend to his loved ones back in the states does wonders for the mind. It really comes down to just receiving items while you are away is the key. It really doesn't matter what it is.

Ooh, the offering to take care of the family is a great idea!!!:)

I think I will also just ask him if he has time to write requests too. They said packages take 6 weeks at the most to get there, so I should send something now.

This seems like a geat program. While we were deployed we had several groups adopt soldiers and send stuff. Cookies are ok during the winter months, even ones with just chocolate of peanut cjhips in will met and spoil during the summer. The one thing I appreciated most was one group who sent cards to my kids to thank them for their sacrifice and sent them small gifts. Magazines are the best options. Car, motorcycle, and any of teh stuff/FHM are had to come by

I remember reading somewhere that there are restrictions on what can and can't be sent. No playboy mags, that sort of stuff.

I think sending some small gifts to his children, if he has any, would be great.
