View Full Version : Pintle Hooks

In response to a few inquiries I got about the hitch on my truck.
Pintle hooks are made by a few different companies.
There are ridgid mount and articuable mount types.
The ridgid ones bolt onto the truck directly or in the case of the H3, onto an adapter that slides into the receiver.
Articuable ones need a special designed mount to allow the hook to spin as the terrain changes.
In the case of my military trailer, the trailer has an articuable lunnette eye that spins in it's tounge so if the terrain changes suddenly, the trailer won't flip or pull the truck over with it.
Generally one of the vehicles should articulate. Ideally both.
I found that Buyers Products, makes quite a bit for trucks.
www.BuyersProducts.com
I used a PM84 receiver adapter to mount a PH15, (15 Ton capable pintle hook) and a USGI Rigid Pintle Hook Chain Plate.
The adapter fits the 2" receiver.
They also make multiple height adapters, but I thought the PM84 looked better for the H3. The adjustable height ones are a little tall, and don't look right. The PM84 keeps the pintle hook at the same level as the receiver tube, with out any extra metal on the top or bottom.
The Chain plate, just adds a degree of bulk to the hitch, and assists me in towing the trailer since my hitch pin tends to cover up the H3's chain plate holes.

Origianlly I put it on to assist as a rear crash device. I thought, let someone rear end the pintle hook, not my bumper. It is just at the right height to rip out the front end of a car. Grill, condenser, radiator, etc. :crying: I think though they will still hit my bumper.
Oh well, I don't think it will hurt quite as bad, as if I didn't have anything.:twak:
The trailer was purely secondary. I didn't even think about it, until I had put the hitch on. Then I thought, wouldn't that be neat.
Then I bought one.:OWNED:

:iagree:
This was the reason I was looking for the pintle type hitch plus it looks cool too, haven't been able to source the whole assembly with hitch adaptor over here though. Probably have to get the adaptor fabbed.
No need for a trailer at the moment, just like the look of it

Looks great!
Where did you get the chain plate? How much did all 3 pieces cost?
Thanks

Receiver adapter is made by Buyers. It's a PM84. One height, same line height as the receiver. Made for 2" receiver. The H3 has a 2" receiver. Most trucks do.
Pintle hook is 15ton capable. Buyers PH15. There are of course other sizes available. 5 ton, 8 ton, 20 ton. Depends what you want.
I think the whole thing was like 80 or 90 bucks. I can't remember and wasn't really monitoring the price all that much; I was going to make it regardless.
Chain plate is USGI, bought on ebay. Hard to find! around $20 or $25.

very nice
I'm a big pintle hook fan myself -- my trailer is the 3/4 ton version. It needs a paint job, but is otherwise in perfect working condition.

Bigpoppa & bjc,
Those are some great trailers!! Any idea about what they weigh?
1,250lbs empty. I've made many trips to the dump where it tipped the scales at 4,000lbs, though. The H3 tows it just fine, but ideally I should have trailer brakes for the types of loads I pull.
Lex's trailer is actually a much better match for the H3. You really can't overload it to the point where it is too dangerous, and it fits and articulates nicely on the trails.

Mine is 775 lbs.
I found mine from a surplus dealer in Colorado. He had three left, and now he's sold out.
There are other places, like the site above. Some may need a bit more TLC than others. Mine only needed a few rust repair spots, and new paint.
Then I added all the extra stuff. However, it did come with the tarpaulin.
There is a dealer in Quebec. Name on ebay is Military Tires. Michele Kuntz, I believe is the name.

I called the number listed on the site and they are completely sold out. Sold last 4 earlier this week and he doesnt expect getting any more for quite some time. Dang, I really want to get a hold of one now. They look like they go perfect with the H3!
