Offroad Newbie

I have a stock 2006 H3 and I want to do some offroading ( i.e. Moab, other insane offroading locales) and I was wondering what I needed to get in order to go and do this. What type of tires, wheels, other accessories? I have chrome wheels, btw.

you need rocker protection , under carriage protection , and some 35's .

then just ditch the steps and you are all set :jump:


then you can line-X all that chrome ;)

NEOCON1, I have a few questions for you. I have always admired your rig because it is so clean and simple, without too much offroad gadgetry. You say 35's, ok. How much of a lift did you put on it? **Please bear with me as I only have a basic understanding of tech stuff on cars, I am more of an expert on which car is what, performance, etc.** Also, where did you get the rocker protection and under carriage protection? Which brand do you recommend, if any?

i have not lifted the truck , it just looks bada$$ ;)

the factory under carriage protection is fine , i think its great for the price and same with the rocker protection . we have done some pretty radical stuff with just the factory protection . check online and gm parts direct for the best deal . its been almost 2 years since i bought mine , someone here should know where to get the best prices at now .:beerchug:

Looks familier, I need to take a photo of the one I have on the drivers side door. Oh wait I have one somewhere from last year at moab right when Nav was taking a photo fromthe outside...where did it go????? I was steeeep but since I was following everyone else it seemed ok. :jump:

you don't need much just some straps, and a friend if you go where you may get stuck. Here is a bone stock base H3 with auto on some serious sh*t. some chirpping and whell slip but stay on brake throttle and your in. slow and easy and nothing gets broke

Do you really need to have 35's to off road? I dont have adventure pkg on mine. I plan on putting undercarriage protection eventually, but am worried about the correct tires. Can a base model without adventure pkg handle 35's? Im sure its obvious but I am very new to off road vehicle. My last vehicle was Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled in bad rollover wreck.

Also, I know this is probably a dumb question but what are "lockers"?

35's are not necessary to offroad, it depends on how extreme you want to get.

Lockers:
a device installed in the rear, or front. differential, that locks, to cause both rear or both front tires to spin or drive together.

You would be surprised at what your truck can do just the way it is. Enjoy it.

I had the base model with Toyo 33's the two times I went to Moab.
I didn't do anything super crazy, but it is amazing what even the base model is capable of. Prior to 2006 we never really had what would have been considered an "off road" vehicle, had vehicles with four wheel drive but more for just the Montana weather.
