Story by 9News Reporter Bill Price:

Photographed by Chic Poppe and Dave Marlo:
A suspect is dead and two Blue Ash police officers were injured after a high speed police chase ended in a police-involved shooting early Tuesday morning.
The suspect has been identified as Charles Wayne Bennett, 37, of Blue Ash.
Officers said they were forced to fire upon Bennett, who was unarmed, because he reportedly tried to run them down -- not once, but twice.
The incident started just before 12:30 a.m., on Cornell Road near Sycamore High School, when the black Chevrolet Bennett was driving was spotted driving suspiciously, police said.
When officers tried to pull the car over, they said Bennett turned his car around and drove back toward their cruiser, almost hitting it.
Officers tried to get him to stop, but instead Bennett led them on a chase of several miles through Blue Ash, at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
As Bennett's car approached Reed Hartman Highway at Glendale Milford, he was seen driving left of the center line and without his headlights on.
The car then slammed into a Blue Ash cruiser at Reed Hartman and Cooper Road.
As two officers approached the stopped car, they said Bennett accelerated towards one of them.
Both officers fired into the car in response. At that point, Bennett reportedly took off again.
Just 200 feet away along Reed Hartman Highway, Bennett hit another Blue Ash police car.
A third officer was struck by the car as it lunged forward.
He was slammed onto the car's roof and then fired additional shots into the car to get it to stop.
The chase finally ended near the intersection of Reed Hartman Highway and Cooper Road in Blue Ash, after the driver crashed into a Blue Ash cruiser.
Blue Ash Police Captain James Schaffer explained what happened next, "Further down the road at Reed Hartman, the suspect crashed into a second police car. Then the car lunged at several officers as they tried to approach, and more shots were fired."
Bennett was shot by police and was taken to Bethesda North Hospital in Montgomery where he died.
There are numerous bullet holes in the suspect's car, which police said was reported stolen out of Clermont County.
Two Blue Ash Police officers suffered minor injuries. One was taken to the hospital and released, while the other refused treatment.
Police said the suspect had, what they refer to as, "an extensive criminal record."
Bennett's passenger was injured by flying glass and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released. He is not being charged.
The three officers who shot at the stolen car have been placed on paid administrative leave while the pursuit and shooting investigation continues. Bennett is well known among Blue Ash Police for charges of drug trafficking.

I'm glad to see all the officers involved were OK.

Lets build more prisons (like that Sherrif with the tent prison in the south) and stop pussy footing with career criminals...

For Capital Murder no more of this 10 years till they are put to death. One year of appeals is enought.

For Law Enforcement Officers "IN THE FIELD" rewards for capture of career criminals.

One thing I would like to think about would be a National Police Force. That way the LAW would be the same everywhere which can possibly lead to less loopholes...

As much as this guy needed to go down - it still pisses me off to see pigs use deadly force so easily. If you have multiple pigs with radios just beat him at the game and take him down. No need to use deadly force like that when a man is unarmed.

Pigs always cry about the odds are staked against them and look at this situation, they had every advantage and still used deadly force.

I don't think you read the story:

A third officer was struck by the car as it lunged forward.
He was slammed onto the car's roof and then fired additional shots into the car to get it to stop.

Time to go nite-nite after that.

No it was not tongue and cheek. =)

I have real cops in my family..

There are several different types of cops, those who have honor and truely serve and protect and those who just want to harrass someone and then even worse those who just want to shoot someone for any reason.

I respect those who serve and protect us at all costs as this deserves appreciation and admiration. The guy who jumped on his hood and pumped an unarmed man full of lead was a pig! He could have disabled him or his car many other ways. That was a human life regardless.

We are all comforted by knowing it turned out to be a class A loser that deserved what he got, but at the same time it could have been a great father of 5 who just snapped by losing his job and went off track from drinking himself stupid and is now dead from just trying to run from them and get home to see his kids.

When you pull that trigger and send a soul packing, a cop should make sure he was a deadly threat.

I may be wrong but its just my opinion.

It takes a person 6 months of police school to arrest you for nothing and seriously complicate your life, and it takes an attorney 6 years of school to possibly get you off the hook, and even worse a judge that requires no education to call balls and strikes.

The douschebag was trying to run over those guys repeatedly. If you were the police man (hereinafter "Pig"), would you let him run you over to save yourself from the stigma of being called a "pig" by someone on a couch in another city? Did you even see what led up to the guy shooting (other than the perp trying to kill several people with his car)? I didn't see a "guy who jumped on his hood and ..." did you? Did he jump? Hop? Skip? Was he hit by a maniac who had recklessly endangered numerous people already and just wanted to see his wife, kids, and mom again? I didn't see that part in the video. Did you? He's driving over 100mph in a small city, ramming cops, trying to run them over. How would you like it if the "pig" had not fired his weapon and had been thrown off the car and paralyzed and another family of six driving home had all been killed in a head-on by the perp? Would that be better? Not by me -- kill the a$$hole who wll eventually end up killing others.

Your right, I didnt see how he got there and no i didnt get to see it all. Which only gives me part of the facts. But in the vid I never once saw him try and run them over. I did see in the vid where they DID run him over (which was the right thing to do to disable him).

One has to ask the question: If a man is "truely" charging at officers why the hell would they get out of the car and stand in front of it? Why wouldnt they just use thier own squad cars?
Officers want to go home at the end of the day just like everyone else. Very few people actually have a death wish. So, if he was "really" trying to run over someone why on earth would you A: get out of your squad car to allow yourself to be ran over. B: jump on the hood of the guys car in the first place and not jumped to the side. Watch the vid again he was barely moving. All they needed to do was to box him in and then take him down.

You are right on another thing, in this case he deserved what he got as in the specific person in this case. But again, what if that was your brother or another family member or co-worker that had just flipped out. They pig on the hood went too far. Taking lives so easily should not always be the answer when they are not showing eminent danger. He never even once tried to hit one of the cop cars. He we in thier direction sure, but watch again he avoided them to go around them.

Just my opinion.

what if that was your brother or another family member or co-worker that had just flipped out.

I appreciate your candor, but that aspect does never pursuasive to me. If Charles Manson was my brother and we'd played on the playgrounds together for years back in the 60s, i'd probably want them to let him out. The "what if it was your mother who was commiting bad crimes" hypothetical never influences what a proper response should be by the police.

As to the guy not deserving it, read the story:

Officers tried to get him to stop, but instead Bennett led them on a chase of several miles through Blue Ash, at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
As Bennett's car approached Reed Hartman Highway at Glendale Milford, he was seen driving left of the center line and without his headlights on.

Finally!!!

I watched the video again and I must say at the very beginning when the police officer lurched his car towards the suspect and the suspect went around him and he starts yelling, "Suspect tried to ram me!" was a complete OVER exaggeration on the rookie's part.

That being said, police officers regardless of training, are human just like you and I. They feel rage, anger and even racism. Some can control it, some can't. They have a very stressful job and put their asses on the line more in one day than some of us do in a lifetime.

If I was on that guy's hood, I would have shot it up and killed him too.

Because by that point, rage would have taken over.

I know! Its a play on words to justify thier actions and to amp up the other officers. He never hit one of them (from what I saw) they hit him - which is totally what they should do to disable him.

They knew he wasnt a danger or they never would have goten out of thier cars. Have you ever watched a cop get out and run into the live of fire when they knew he was armed? NO! they take cover and take aim like they should. They knew he was just trying to run and wasnt going to really hurt them so they didnt get him boxed in and he kept evading and then it was all over when the one cop emptied his clip into an unarmed man.

But your right Dennis, its easy for me to sit here on the side lines and call shots of rights and wrongs as the rage probably would have taken anyone over by that point. But again, I dont think he ever intentionally tried to ram or hit any of the cops. But I cant see the whole vid but a majority of the action.

I had a neighbor in Plano TX once, and while they were out of town a friend stopped by to feed the dog and let him out. When leaving they forgot to secure the front door and it was left adjar. The security alarm went off and the local police responded where they were greeted by a old yellow lab. He growled at them as they made thier way to the house front door and 2 officers unloaded thier guns on the famliys pet which was a 10 yr old sweet yellow lab who only growled at them in defence of his residence. He never charged or anything just growled and they emptied two clips into him just because they "felt endangered".
They could have called animal control or sprayed him with pepper spray (as they had it on them and was later questioned as to why they didnt use the peppey spray) and they said they felt "eminently endangered". Needless to say they family was devistated when they came home to find the family pet had been slaughtered.

Pepper spray on the lab would have been more than sufficient. But I think those police officers needed a better "Wow" factor. That's sad.:(

Ya know I myself discuss this with my cop cousins all the time where as they dont put up with sheat and dont hesitate to put the smak down on someone who is disrespectful to them. And I would have to say myself that I would do the same (as in beat the crap out of those who deserve it or spay them from head to toe with pepper spray. But when you ask them about shooting someone - thats a whole different mentality and conversation. They really never want to be faced with that situation and are not anxious for the opportunity. They are honorable guys, and on countless situations have pulled over drunks who were appologetic and humble and they simply drove them home or had someone come get them for a safe passage home.

Last week, my woman got hungry for some fast food (late night) and we had a pig follow us out of our neighborhood, down the street 3 miles, through the Taco Bell drive through and once we left the drive through got on our way home followed us right on our tail the whole way home. As we were pulling into our driveway he hit the lights and did nothing but harrass us! My wife and 14 yr old daughter was with us and he had us all get out of the car (the girls were embarassed as they were in their PJs) as he searched the entire Hummer for anything and everything to justify any citation he could find. Once he was done I asked him why? He said I was driving suspiciosly........ P I G S! Of course he found nothing to justify wirting us up.

Remember, it takes a punk 6 months of cop school to fawk your life up with false charges, and it takes an attorney 6 years of collegeto get you out of trouble and worse a judge to make final descisions as you life hangs in the balance, which requires no educaiton at all to be a judge.
