OK, I'm new to Hummers, so don't jump on me for this question:

I thought pulling in reverse was a bad idea due to its stress load on the drivetrain, which is not designed for greater torque in reverse drive.

I always attached tow straps to the rear frame points of my 4 x 4s and pulled forward. Is the Hummer a tougher breed to where towing in reverse is not an issue?

Obviously you can winch from the front by setting the parking brake and tranny in neutral, but that's a situation of stationary pulling where the extraction vehicle acts as an anchor.

I've actually been told the same thing.

Only reason I can see for pulling in reverse are that you can better see what you are doing, and that in some automatic transmissions, the lowest gear is reverse.

I guess sometmes it can't be avoided, if the guy on the trail in front of you is stuck, and you can't turn around. Then you'll HAVE to tug him out in reverse.
