View Full Version : Header Heat Wrap

I needed to shield a couple plug wires from the header pipe.
I got some pipe wrap and applied it to just the section that needed protection.
It's burning 2x as hot now on the wrapped section. About 500*. Right before and right after the wrap it's mid 200s. If I take the wrap off it's mid 200s.
I thought header wrap was supposed to insulate the pipe, blocking the heat.
Anyone know why it's burning twice as hot in that one wrapped section? I need that section to be as cool as possible for the spark plug wires.
Really baffled here.... HELP!

header wrap is gona hold more heat then a open pipe. its insaulation .its just retaining the heat in a short section and the open pipe is cooling faster cause its got air around it just covering a short section dosnt do the job , u should use a insulatiing plug boot to protect the plug wire insted

Thanks. I thought header wrap brought under hood temps down?
Are you saying its because I only wrapped a small section, and that if I wrapped the entire header it would be cooler not hotter?

I would not wrap them at all. Even the very expensive brands I have seen break welds all due to wrapping them and the temps being far higher than they should ever see. If you need to protect certain things like spark plug wires, plug boots, etc I would wrap those individual parts and not the LT's.
The BEST thing would be to get those new LT's ceramic coated in and out so they retain the heat better but I just saw your thread about the install so that's out.

I've never seen anyone partially wrap a header. I know full wraps work, I had it done on my GNX motor w/ a turbo blanket and it cut out a ton of heat.
Mid 200's shouldn't effect plug wires. Just dont have them touching.

It seems that if you only wrap a section it has the opposite effect. Why I'd really like to know.
The point of wrapping just one section was to insulate it because with OEM plug wires and the LT headers there is no way two of the wires won't be in direct contact with the header.

Just saw the pics from your other post.
I'd call up the mfg and ask them what the correct solution to this is.

The header manufacturer?
They don't return calls, and the couple resellers I've found including the one I bought my kit from aren't worth a sh*t when it comes to knowing anything.
I was hoping H2Much would post a picture of his DT header on the driver side. The OBX and DT are supposed to be the same I thought.
In any event, I just removed the section of header wrap and temps are back down to the mid 250s. Coil pack plugs are actually all even now so the header wrap was hurting not helping.
The heat tape combined with the wire sock is good to go!
Still like know the reason wrapping just one section of the header raises the temps in that spot. I know it's some physics thing but WTF.. ?

quick look at the fullsize forums was showing combination of 1500 degree heat sleeves and using wire brackets to hold away from the pipes. Common issue of smoking two plug wires on drivers side i guess.
