Rear View Camera

Hi there. I know that there have been other discussions regarding this subject, but after searching I still have a couple of questions. I'm actually looking into possibly the HitchCam. They have 4 models, I'm trying to decide between 3 of them, the H-Cam (one that replaces the center light), HitchCam (hitch mounted one) and the FrameCam (for the license frame).

My H2 has the spare tire carrier on the back, so I don't know if the H-Cam would really help since the view down might be blocked by the tire itself.

The HitchCam, since it's too low, would it be effective to avoid us from backing unto another car with the spare tire? Since you have an almost 2 feet extra sticking out with the tire after the rear bumper, that's one of the fears I have since you can't really see at all how close that tire is to objects.

Also wanted to know if someone who owns any of these would be so kind as to let me know whether they really work and if possible post a picture of what you see on the screen?

Someone on this forum took the H-Cam apart and was able to adjust the lens so it pointed out a little to see over the Spare tire. I don't have a picture of that however here is a picture of the normal H-Cam on my H2 with no spare tire. Picture quality sucks but you see the the Hitch Step at the bottom

Thanks NJ H2, wow, I can see how much you are really not seeing without a camera! It seems that the tire would definitely block the view though.

Respectfully, your conjecture about the Hitch-Cam couldn't be more wrong. The lens is extremely wide angle and you get a perfect view of exactly how close the spare is to everything is approaches. Things you might consider include whether or not you will be keeping the spare carrier. If so, you can mount the unicam into the license plate placard. Yes, you do not want the H-cam if you don't want to lose that light or if you want to see what is below the spare. Yes, I do remove my Hitchcam when I off-road or tow. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

JMV1210 has a great Camera set up in the rear bumper cut out. It has awesom night vision and great visability. I don't know what Camera he is using.

Thanks tower, and everyone else for your help. Tower you mention that yon can see the spare and its distance from objects. As long as you can then I would conside the HitchCam. Seems simple to install. Really worried my wife is going to hit something with that tire when backing up, or run someone over (concerned about the ones who don't deserve to get run over http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) when she goes to the supermaket.

A picture of the view would be great!

This thread gives an idea of what you can see with my high mount rear camera and the spare mounted outside. For me it is the best compromise that I could come up with (as I regularly tow a trailer)...

I have a tire carrier as well so I installed a cam on the bumper so the tire does not get in the way at all. Gives me a great view of everything directly behind me, I can even read people's license plates when they pull behind me! Saved me from taking out my kids scooter once, though I almost ran it over anyways just because it should not have been there! LOL

Only problem is when I tow I cannot see much of anything, though I really don't really need to either...

I did not want to use a hitch cam because I use the hitch a lot and later I bought a set of back up lights that sets itself on the hitch and would have interfered.

Don't really use the hitch. Leaning very strongly towards getting the HitchCam. Just want to be sure that I can see how close the tire is to objects.
