View Full Version : 35's on stock rims - Q&A

I've seen quite a few of you on here with 35's. From what I'm gathering, 315/75/r16's ATs do NOT rub at full lock, but I also read that 35x12.5r18s MTs DO rub. After checking out tire dimensions (315/75/R16 MT vs. AT), it seems 35" MT's are about a 1/2" taller and wider than most AT's. I'm guessing we're limited to 35" All Terrains without modification. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Questions:
1. For those with 35's, what brands are fitting without rubbing? bbyhummer mentioned Mickey Thompsons and Pro Comp Xterrains, but I couldn't find true tire dimensions on these.
Nitto Terra Grappler AT's maybe?
2. The stock 33's kick up dirt all over the rear fender and side. Are the 315/75's 'much' worse? I'm more concerned with regular driving...off road, its something you have to expect.
3. Stock chrome rims are the same dimension, but the dealer swears they can't hold the same tire as adv. pkg wheel. Why, I don't know. Will 35's fit stock chrome wheel? 8" seems to be the minimum wheel width required for 35's, but I'm seeing 37s on stock rims http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif It's confusing.
4. Power - Is there a noticeable difference in power? Sticking to a lighter stock rim, I'd imagine it wouldn't be too noticeable.
5. Torsion bars - How many turns, if any, do you recommend?
Kacyk answered a lot of these questions in a past thread, but he had MT's and a heavier 18" rim. I wanted to gather info on 35's on stock rim.
Thanks

I am in the process of doing the same thing. The Rancho lift is coming off on Thursay and they are putting the 35/ 12.50 Procomp Extreme AT's on the stock rims. they told me that the 35's should be fine on the 7.5" rim. The tire manufacts. suggest 8". but we'll see.

It's only a 1/2", I'm sure the tire companies are playing it safe for liability purposes when it comes to wheel recommendations.

As far as your #2 concern ... I have installed the 3M Paint protection kit for the fenders and lower body. I would HIGHLY recommend installing this on any H3. I had this product on the nose of my last car and it is great!
We had a couple of snow storms here in the last few weeks. The places that the kit protects is exactly where the snow and sand was caked on.
It took me about 2 hours to install the kit (yes I am slow but I ma careful).
I woudl have sent pictures but you would not have been able to see the installed kit in the photos.

I don't think those will fit on the stock rim. I looked at those before I bought mine.

So answer me this, how did Rough Country fit 37's on stock, but some 35's don't fit? And what brands are P metric ?
Confuses the hell out of me.

so the 315's will fit becasue they are metric?
I hope so, because that's what they are doing today. the Extreme AT's are the same size as your X Terrains. so they should. I guess I'll find out in the next couple of hours. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

YEAH! They fit. They touch the sway bar just a tad. My torsion bars are at the stock height too. So for those that are questioning if they fit, they do! I went from 35's to 37's on my SUT and had way more rubbing than this. They barely touch and that's at full lock in reverse only. I'll post some pics in a day or two if anyone still wants some.
Now all I have to do is order a new front skidplate. They cut mine to make it fit for the Rancho Sucko lift. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif So, other than that, it rides just like it did two weeks ago when I picked it up from the dealer. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

timgco if they rub "a bit" that doesn't fit. sorry to sound like johnny cockrin with the ryhme. i mean i dont really like the idea of any rub on a brand new expensive tire. they look awesome but i dont want any damage. do you plan on adding wheel spacers to correct? i want to keep my wheels or atleast the size and add 35's but i would like to be comfortable with the clearance in the fender wheels.

when you bump the tire size it's pretty tough not to touch a tad here and there, especially if you twist the suspension up. with these the fonrt doesn't flex much so you avoid alot of contact.
I would expect to trim a bit here and there. remember every manufacturers tire is going to have a differnt actual size from the one listed, wheel width/air press etc can also affect the actual size and your backspacing/width will affect contact

LMAO at your avatar. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Ok,
Defenition of rubbing on my truck: It only touches on the dr sd sway bar at full lock and you cannot even feel it in the steering column/ wheel. It is so minor that it won't mess up your tire. The only reason I even mentioned it, was so that owners wanting to MT's on there with larger lugs than my tires will expect a little more rubbing on the swaybar.
the H2 I had with 35's rubbed more than the H3 with 35's. the 37's on the H2 polished the swaybar on both sides at full lock and never showed wear that it was damaging the tire. I only had about 14,000 miles of wear on them though.

OK tire guys you seem to know what your talking about. I'm thinking of going with a 17 or 18 inch wheel. I know the extra rubber is needed at the sidewall when airing down, but will the slightly larger wheels get f-ed up when offroad or will there still be enough rubber. Obviously, if I'm too hard on it, any wheel will be damaged but I'm just talking trailing, hill climbing, and nothing too crazy. Thanks for the input.

You'll still be fine with 17's. 18's would still be good too, but you will find the price starts to jump up there too.

They will stick waaaaaaayyyyyy out! If you go look at my post inthe photos section with the lift, those were 4.5" of backspace. I hated it so bad becasue you drive through on puddle or rain/ snow and your rig is trashed! If that's the look you want, great, it looks good. But as a daily driver, I am happy they are back in!

NEOCON1....
I was playing around with the numbers and this is what I'm figuring. The 17x9's should stick out about 3" farther with the 35's, than the stock rims with 33's. Even with a wider tire & rim, the interior of the 35's will be out about an inch from where the 33's sit now. Rubbing shouldn't be an issue. Looking forward to the pics.

hey timgco 17x9 with 4.5 bs they will stick out about 2 in more than stock should be ok i like the stomper look and so cal not as many puddles and stuff to splash sides. not sure how they will tuck up in wheel wells in serious flex situations ? hopefully the tires wont rip my fenders off http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif if problem with serious flex will throw the 33's back on for hardcore wheelin just until the rough country is ready for us . thanks again for all the info on your experience with the rancho kit http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
