I checked out two backup sensors today. One uses infrared and the other ultrasound. I have a basic understanding of the two technologies but cannot determine which is better for this application. Any thoughts out there?

Seriously, I have experience with infrared and it is great. Of course, when I say "experience" I do not mean anything super high-tech. I am talking about IR home cameras and IR binculars.
That is surely comparable to what you are talking about and it is great. I bet the Usound is more expensive...
