I would have even settled for a hand crank rear window. It'd be cool to have it removable as well, like the avalance. It just seems like one of those necessaties in an off road vehicle. I'm talking of course about the swing gate window.

It would be hard for the glass to go through the bolts that hold the spare tire on to the swinggate.

No. It's good good old american steel and heavier than most. There is a 35lb piece of reinforcement sandwiched between the inner pannel and outer pannel. The middle piece is what the spare is actually bolted to.

ok, my next question is...why are they hanging the spare on the swing gate? I can tell you that on all vehicles i've owned and ridden in that have a spare on the gate, squeaks and rattles see to be the norm. I like the bumper mounted tire carrier personally. rock solid and no weight on the gate. like the H2.
I'm just thinkin outloud here. I know there's a reason for GM engineers doing things the way they did and there's no way my intelligence could compare with theirs. no sarcasm. i have a lot of respect for the design engineers of the biggest auto company in the world.

Personally, I like the styling of the spare on the rear door. Mine has yet to rattle or make any noise and if you have to use it, it's easy to get off - those under the frame spares are a pain to drop down and use. If you do offroad long enough, you're going to use your spare more than the average person. I don't find the door that hard to swing open with the extra weight of the tire either.
On the other hand a lot of people prefer the clean look, but styling wise that big tire hanging out there says MACHO all over it IMHO. It does block some rear visibility, but there are those who sawed out the split and replaced the rear window on the '63 Vette too - to each their own!

That should have been a capital offense. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If the glass was able to go down there would'nt be anyplace for the jack.
It would be great if they figured a way for it to go down though.

There are several reasons the rear window doesn't go down but one that hasn't been mentioned is the possibility of exhaust fumes entering the vehicle.
Some vehicles (especailly SUV's) can create a vacuum and draw exhaust inside when moving.

good point coolH3. as much exhaust fumes as i've inhaled in my past wranglers i can't believe i hadn't tought of that before i posted.
There are a lot of reasons as mentioned, but doesn't it just seem as though that would be a major consideration during design phase?
I'm even open to the half n half method.(gate closed, window can go up sepparate). even mini vans have those.
