This little exchange got me interested in the point me discussed, so I headed over to the Gobi Racks Website.

Amazingly enough it looks as though they have done little to protect any sort of trademark or design of their own besides having their logo registered.

Gobi looks to make a fine product that many people would be happy with but I have to side with Detonate in that a metal framed square with a single raised end would be hard to argue as being intellectual property. I would like to think that the Gobi lawyers will one day see this thread and the only thing they will have to say is, "Sandra, be quiet."

They email their Price Lists out. I'm pretty sure they change the prices based on demand and cost of materials.

Why is it so tall? It kind of looks like a double decker. Is there two levels to that rack? It's hard to tell in the pics but maybe you can store cargo underneath. Can you buy additional levels? What is the maximum number of levels, maybe 6? It's probably best to put the heavy cargo on level 1 and the light stuff (like marshmallows) on level 6. Do you think this is a good idea with a 4" lift or will this baby tilt over in a stiff wind?

It clears the Factory Roof Bars if you have them. I do not.

I really like the tough country stuff! Being from Texas, everything is a little bigger than most. I happen to like the higher sidewalls on the roof rack.
I am currently designing my own roof rack, and plan to incorporate the best of everyones designs.
Is that breaking the rules?
I guess we wouldn't be driving the awesome vehicles that we do, if the best ideas of different makers weren't incorporated into one.

How come the guy in the bumper dumper pic didn't pull his long johns down? Is he pooping in his underwear? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the bumper dumper?

I think the dumper on top is a bad idea. It is obvious detonate is about ready to roll the truck in to the water. I'll bet as soon as he leans over to wipe it rolls but only because of the lift he installed. Maybe the brush guard that is 4x too big for the truck will keep it down but with that roof rack that's 6x too big it's hard to say. Does Tuff Country make a new 8 headlight setup too like the family truckster? I think soon your trucks going to look like this:

Ah, that explains why the directions from the west coast to Texas are "Head east 'till ya smell ****, turn right and when your stepping in it your in Texas ....."

Nice looking rack. Does it make a lot of wind noise? Mine did until I moved it back a little. I now have the spare tire up on my rack but you can not hear it at all.

I designed and built the rack on my H2. Here are some pictures of it. I do CNC machining, if anyone is interested in a set of Billet aluminum feet for a custom rack let me know. Eight of them would be about $500 with a clear coat.

The rack doesn't make any extra noise that I've noticed.

When they put it on they warned that some people had mentioned a little Hum, but by sliding the rack back an Inch at a time till it went away solves the problem.

I'm not sure if I can justify spending $500 for some billet, when I can weld up some metals ones for about 20 bucks.
Not to say they don't look really nice!
How is the rack actually mounted to the billet pieces?
Are there mounting screws that go into the billet pieces?
It's OK if you don't answer(Confidential), I was just thinking out loud!

There are 1/4-20 thread inserts put into the bottom of the steel tubing. The crimp kind, see the Thread Setter on eastwoodcompany.com. The aluminum is counter bored from the bottom for SS cap head screws.

There are other ways to connect the feet. You could weld on a flange and just bolt through it into the aluminum. That is how many of the rack companies connect there feet.
