Just the double sided tape side since the other side is bolted in on the inside of the tailgate.

The biggest problem with the guards is they used a really flimsy piece of metal on the side that bolts to the body. If you had used a more rigid piece of metal you would not have to use 3m tape at all. You would only have to use a space/bumper as a cushion so it would not bang against the paint.
