Michiana is the common name given to the area of Northern Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan which comprises 11 counties , the core being La Porte, St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall (in Indiana) and Berrien (in Michigan. The main towns are South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart (in Indiana) and Niles (in Michigan), all of which lie along the St. Joseph River, which winds it's way through the area to it's mouth in Lake Michigan to the north.
St. Joseph County is the fourth largest in Indiana and South Bend the largest city in the Michiana area and the fourth largest city in the state with a population of 108,000 (2000 est.). Mishawaka and Elkhart both have a population of around 50,000. South Bend is named for it's location on a south bend of the St. Joseph River, while Mishawaka, the "Princess City" is named after Princess Mishawaka, daughter of Shawnee Chief Elkhart.
The area is the center of the RV (Recreational Vehicle) and Manufactured Housing industries, as well as the Band Instrument industry, with a number of other communications and pharmaceutical companies, and AM General (manufacturers of the Hummer).
South Bend is also home to the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College, two of the most prestigious Catholic universities in the country. The area population is made up of a number of immigrant groups, including Hungarian, German, Polish, Irish and Greek, with a growing Asian and Hispanic population in the 1990's. There are also Amish and Mennonite communities in nearby Nappanee and Shipshewana.

Re: Stupid Question.

I should have known this wasn't a yes/no question.

Not that it was an issue in purchasing, but I've found women are more attacted to the Hummers than they were to the Vette. Hey, they are kinda cute togetherunder the car port, and the neighbors are amsed. :jump:
