Okay, removed the tape this morning. The black silicone stuck like a champ, no movement in the trim at all. Drove up to 80 mph at lunch time strong cross winds and all, blissfull silence, well at least from the A-pillars :)

If you have this annoying problem, spend the 20 minutes and just do it. At least for now, looks like the silicone (or RTV) is THE :D solution, plus in my opinion this will keep all the crap from getting behind this trim piece, as well. Mine my packed full of dirt and debris.
