Re: For you that Pray!
I thank all of you for your support.
We moved or should I say the Hospital decided it would be best for him to go to a rehab center in Mount Vernon VA. I personaly think it was the insurance company putting pressure to move him out of the hospital. His surgery was a success! but he hasn't had much food since and can no longer stand he ahs lost so much muscle. Like most of the older generation he has his pride and being bed ridden has taken its toll on him. He stated tonight that he is giving up! Of course true to my dads style he waits until I get back to FL for the weekend to say that. I am at wits end here and I would like to know if any of you have any sort of connections or politcal power or suggestion on how to get him back in Alexandria Hospital so that he can get 24/7 care. Re: For you that Pray!
Thats a tough one Wayne, You mentioned that the old school guys and theyre pride, My pops is 82 and going through the same stuff, I never understood him, until you just made that statement. Thanks.
Insurance Companies do alot of things, like quit paying the hospital bills and then the hospital has to kick him free. It costs a small fortune to stay in the hospital. Hospitals have a 300% mark up, I know this cause my Mom paid all cash prior to passing of cancer recently and they worked a deal with her. Im sure you have seen how scary our Medical System is here in America, Its really sad that we take care of everybody else out of country and Illegal but when we need it, were shoved downward. Its going to take another EVENT for your father to wind up in the hospital again, Im sorry to put it that way, but thats how it works. I wish I had an easy answer for you but its a tough one and I feel your pain and concern. Hang in there and keep us informed Hucky:beerchug: |

Re: For you that Pray!
We're saying prayers for your dad here, too, Wayne. My best advise regarding rehab ... PLEASE make sure you have someone there with your dad at all times. Whether it's a relative or a hired nurse or nurses assistant... someone needs to be there to make sure he's getting his meds .. to make sure he's getting the CORRECT meds .. to make sure he's being turned so not to develop bed sores, etc. Once the hospital puts a patient into rehab, it has to do with insurance, but also because a patient's immune system is lowered due to illness or surgery that they are vulnerable to picking up something. I had an immediate family member in the hospital for 2 months (2 weeks in ICU, 2 weeks in PCU .. and the rest of the time on the medical floor). The staff was afraid something else could be picked up from being in there so long. I know that to be true now after hearing and reading so much about staph infections among long term hospital patients. But, back to the rehab. You need to be your dad's advocate and make sure someone is with him overseeing. If a family member can't be with him 24/7 .. and if one of you can't pay for a nurse or aid to be there overseeing, then split the cost among the immediate family members and get one. If someone isn't there physically with the recooperating family member, they will be overlooked much of the time. Good luck to you. Our prayers are with your family and dad. Please keep us updated, Wayne.

Today he seemed to be in a better mood, I took Hmmm3 advice and will be flying up Tuesday to meet with a nurse that my dad liked at the Hospital and have her go and look after him when she can. I guess all I can really do is wait and pray that he will somehow pull through this. I will be flying up every week to check on Mom even though she thinks I am checking on Dad. Thanks everyone. Re: For you that Pray!
So glad to hear that your dad is in a better mood, Wayne. I'm also happy to hear that you'll be flying up to visit and to talk to the nurse. If you won't be hiring a nurse, you (or your sis) may want to periodically give the nurse (the one your dad favors) a few dollars for taking the time to look in on your dad. Just tell her it's for a cup of coffee or snack (or whatever). This way she'll feel more inclined to make the visits. We did this with a family member and it gave us peace of mind. Also, a friend of ours mom was put into rehab (attached to the hospital). The hospital is in the top 100 in the U.S. Because her mom and the other woman in the room were elderly and sedated, they did not realize when the med rounds came around. The friend's mom was given the other woman's meds and vice versa it caused enough of a problem that the family decided to have a grand daughter stay round the clock with her in a sleeper chair in the room. While there, the grand daughter took notes and noted that the meds weren't always given when they should have been .. the catheter for wastes would overflow ... etc. She had to be the 'noisy wheel' to get things done right. I'm not trying to scare you, I just want you to be aware. It's good to have someone keeping a watchful eye while your dad is in rehab after the hospital. Rehabs are much more lax than the hospital atmosphere. Best wishes and plenty of prayers going your way.
