it has been awhile since i removed mine. but if i recall you need to remove the plastic cover that runs across the floor from one side tothe other, also reome the little storage boxes on the top of each wheel well then you can pop off the side panels you might be able to reach the rear light harness from the opening of the boxes its a tight fit but that is what is keeping you from taking out the lights once you remove the screws from the lenses

by sanding them down you get a cleaner job i actually sanded mine down to where all the writing was off then applied a total of 3 coats per lens and a coat of clear i used 1000 grit in between each coat and i thunk i used 600 grit for the initial sanding it has been close to 4 years now since i did it.
