David,
Could you be more specific: "If the install isn't done properly or becomes loose"
I want to bring this up to my installer and I would like to know what he should look for. Thanks in advance.

Sure, I just went through this with a CodeAlert system on my H2. There are some wires on my alarm that are for options not used. They are sometimes not "powered" as my installer tells me so if they are not sending a 12V signal, then the H2 computer picks it up as a problem. The "service 4WD" message is exactly what is sent on the CodeAlert's but it only occurs on remote start. If it occurs with regular key start, then this is not the problem from what my installer tells me. I don't remember the exact nature of the problem except the service 4WD message. Do you even have a alarm or remote start besides the factory one?

David,
I have a Clifford MATX RS3.5 in my 2005 H2.
Thanks I've been looking for info on this for almost a year now. I don't think DEI knows about this glitch. My installer double checked his install and told me he even asked DEI techs if they came across this (of course they said no).
Thanks again.

If you want to save $600 and your truck has less than 36K miles, bring it in ASAP.

Got the same "SERVICE 4WD" message and have been ignoring it for a few weeks. Then fianlly got a chance to bring it in. My rig has 44K+ miles when the message first showed up. The diag from the tech says the "TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MODULE" has to be replaced. The damn thing is about $350 and labor is about $250.

I hope that helps. Does the problem occur with a key start? Did it begin after your install? I don't want you to overlook a true 4WD problem.
I just caught a mistake I made. My alarm system is a AutoPage, not a CodeAlert. I write for a publication called "The Coding Alert" and got the names mixed up but the details otherwise are correct.

I brought it in on Friday and they(dealership) said that there is nothing wrong with my 4wd..
Thanks DrG for the info I'm having my truck looked at because it only happens when I use the remote start.
