Looks like a great time, thanks for posting the pics.

I see blue tape in this pic but not over the whole fender. Whose is that and what did you use shields on the fenders?

Looks like you had a great time.

Do you have to have a guide? Or did you choose to hire them? How does that work?

Guides are not mandatory, but to be Rubicon friendly, it is suggested. Friends of the Rubicon, a non-profit org., asks that you go with someone who knows the trail the first few times you go.

You can get very lost up there. It is not just one trail. Many offshoots and places to get off the path. They have Sherriffs and Rangers walking the trail, and they write tickets, expensive ones, if they catch you off the trail.

We did not hire them. They are members of the Rock n Roll 4x4 club (Cranky Steve is too). Scott is a member of the "Rubicon Trail Patrol".

I simply just asked if someone would be willing to take us out on the trail, and immediately got three volunteers.:D

Didnt' see them, but they were supposed to come in from the Tahoe side.

I did see Amir driving up 50 so I'm guessing they still went.

So what was your guides impression of the H3 before and after wheeling all weekend.

Re: H3's on the Rubicon

So except for Bebe's stubborn locker, there were no mechanical issues. Just a lot of rock rash and a couple dents.

So here's the damage report on my truck: :D

Dent in rear PS door.
Rock rash on DS rear fender.
Dented rock rail on DS
Passenger rock rail bent up about an inch
Front piece of UCP bent up a couple inches
Scrapes and gouges on just about every part of the undercarriage. :D

Awesome pics. Gotta love the night wheeling too! What's the story on your locker humbebe? Was it out the whole trip?

HummBebe 07-24-2006 05:52 PM

Re: H3's on the Rubicon

Not much choice in coming down hard....big rocks = big drops on the under carriage.

My carnage list:
Rear driver door handle has a granite gouge
Rear driver fender made nice with a couple of trees
Passenger rock rail has sheets of line-x coming off
Driver rockrail is scraped up underneath
Didn't even bother looking under the truck, I know it's trashed.

Sometimes. :D But it's really unavoidable in a lot of places. If you go to slow over some stuff you would just get high-centered. So you had to slide along the rails/UCP in order to not get stuck.

You should BABHUMV's Manik rails. One of them was smashed almost flat.

The E-locker story:

Wednesday my truck was at the dealer having the CD player replaced. It died.

When they replaced the CD player, they neglected to make sure the e-locker module was snapped in all the way.

I ran from GateKeeper to Wentworth Springs Campground, in the dark, with no locker:mad:

Babhumv saved the day, when the next morning, he pulled my console out and fiddled with the module. It snapped back in and we were in business. I almost had to turn around and go home.

Thanks Babe, I don't know what I would have done without you, 'cept cry myself a river.:D

Bebe, how do you think an H2 would have done? Probably a lot more dents? Glad you had a good time, looks like it was a lot of fun.

Let's go find out! I think we can test just how wide the trail actually is. I really want to go up there.

Glad you got the locker fixed Beebs!

Send a gift to those ignorant motorcycle riders. f5's idea is worth looking into...:D

I think the 2's would have no real problems, yes the squeezes would be very tight resulting in more body damage. It is unavoidable.

I would worry about the tierods though, lots of rolling rocks to slide off of. I was surprised we made it through without breaking one.

There were a couple of times I thought mine were done for. But it kept on driving!! Yay mee!:D

Re: H3's on the Rubicon

Great pictures, wish I was there, however how do you guys trash your rides like that and seem like its no biggy? Wow Id be pissed maybe in a few months Ill get over the newness but the cost of repairing those H3's wont be cheap! Do you not repair them?

Overall though I know you guys experienced some serious offroading what is the absolute conclusion to the H3's abilities, is it the ultimate 4x4 capable of most things? Did you learn things that need to be changed? How was the alignment after all that wheeling on the way home? What are you going to change now to make it even better? I know that a winch is in my future probably front and rear, or at least one on the front permanent and a mobile one just in case.

You guys had a ball Id bet, I could feel the fun looking at the photos! Maybe next time Ill trek down from Arizona to join you all if I can get my wifes agreement, shes not a big 4x4 type since I rolled a 93 Bronco about 7 years ago with her in it, busted front and rear drivelines! Learned you cant spin the tires in 4 low that day :) That killed 4 wheeling for her, at least in any situation that could cause it to happen again. More photos please I know you all got em, the sunsets are beautiful there!

If you didnt want to take the chance of destroying your H3 could you still follow the caravan and just skip out on the really rough/rock rash stuff?

I didn't really take any pics of the carnage specfically, but heres a couple that shows some of it.

Bully13's new pinstriping care of H2 Bully. We were wondering when this happened and then I spotted a big rock on the way out on Sunday that had some nice Superior Blue paint on it. :D

You can kind of make out the rock rash on our fenders in this one. You can see the dent in my door in one of the earlier pics.

Nope. But its really just some scratches and little dents. If you really wheel your rig, its gonna happen at some point.

We went on the trip expecting to get some damage, its part of the experience. Actually, we probably fared better than we expected.

Re: H3's on the Rubicon

Thxs Sewie not sure Im ready for damage at this point havent even made the 1st payment yet but in time I know this will be just another vehicle, most cars and newness wears off and the damage begins! Have had a few 4x4s and eventually the fun of wheeling calls and then caution goes the the wind!:D

HummBebe 07-24-2006 08:38 PM

Re: H3's on the Rubicon

Really, for a stock 4x4, it was impressive.

The one thing I would change. The rear shackles. We hung up on them repeatedly!!

Spring under has to be changed if we are going to get serious.

MMM maybe later:D I like my comfy street ride:D

Honestly - thats too much damage for me.

I mean I love wheelin - but if body damage like that is guaranteed - I'd find another place. Just me though. :o

Proud of you guys though - you represented the brand and especially H3s well. GM should send you a check. ;)

Are you talking about the part above where I got stuck? I don't remember that being too tippy unless you went way to the right.

On the spot in the pic, there really isn't anything to worry about since there's only about 1-2 inches to fall until you hit rock. :D
