Hell I am sure the bastard and all his relatives found a way to get through our security and cast their votes for the democraps. Hell that is it. That is how the republicans lost. The damn ragheads voted them out. |

Debate and deadlock doesn't worry me nearly as much as a single party control of capitol hill and the white house who criticize the judges for "legislating from the bench" just because they rule against the party line. I felt the same way when the dems had it locked up under Clinton. The purpose of the three branches of govt is to prevent rubber-stamping a single party's (or president's) policies. Also, congrats to Pelosi as the first female Speaker of the House. I know most of you don't like democrats, but as the first woman in that position, she'll be under INTENSE scrutiny and pressure to be reasonable and bipartisan. If not, she could do a lot of damage to women's rights. Another milestone in gender equality. :beerchug: |
Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken
Just watched Bush's speech.
Very encouraging. Humbled, good natured, acknowleges the voice of the people, but still stands firm on his principals. Very Presidential. Shows a more human side. He's no Reagan, but he looked good today. I think this balance will show better progress. He's still Commander In Chief but with check points now to make sure his decisions are made in the best interest of the majority. Interesting what the next few months will show. Rumsfeld was no surprise. Good riddence. Is it just me or were some of the questions the reporters were throwing at him seemed a bit low class? |
Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken
I know to some this theory of mine will seem awfully dumb. But my idea is this:
If you are a Republican running for President then your running mate for VP must be Democrat. And of course vice versa. To me this would alleviate a lot of animosity between the members of Senate, Congress, and America as a whole. Is there a written law where the President and VP must be from the same party????? |
Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken

I fantasized about that too where the loser automatically becomes the VP.:fdance: But it would be more anti productive when your VP is always disagreeing and badmouthing you on every issue for the sake of representing his party. Wouldn't work. |

Sorry I wasn't clear. The damage I'm thinking of is political. As the first female speaker, she is setting a precedent. If her term is marred by scandal, infighting, extreme partisanship or extremist policy, people may be less likely to vote for female politicians in the future. That would be a blow to female representation in government. I didn't mean to imply that she would take away women's rights just by being in office. |

I figured you didn't. Just wanted to poke at ya a little.

Not a dumb theory at all. The executive branch was originally made up of the President (who won the most electoral votes) and the Vice-President (the first runner-up from another party). But the concept was abandoned in 1800 after an electoral tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/..._President.htm |

Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken
:iagree: Our founding fathers knew what they were doing. It's awesome to see how the voice of the people has now changed the entire political landscape. I hope these next few years bring fiscal responsibility, a clear, careful, and positive plan for Iraq, and a move back towards the center. Personally, I would like things to move a bit left (renewable fuels, education), but I think the center is more in the interest of the majority.
|
Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken
The center is more of what most looking for, but the pursuit of higher minimum wages and some of the other battles they've "lost" in the past is more what I'm concerned about. That and some of the views that I've heard/read that Pelosi has is scary. Perhaps they were rumors. I definitely hope it's for the better, despite where I stand. I know we all do.

Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken
Pelosi is just plain scary with some of the vitriol that's spewed from her mouth.
I'm very concerned for our country and the safety of our citizens. |

yeah...the democrats will fix everything like back social security for illegals working here, stuff like that.
to me the political landscape has just become one big mess. republican or democrat, either party is more interested in garnering votes however they can get them, self serving, absorbed in their power. you have bushie taking us to wars under the premise of wmd's and terrorist plots....4 years later its still untrue. no wmd's and no terrorist groups. but we ruined the most advanced middle eastern country seemingly over bushies personal vendetta. now we are finding that maybe saddam did a pretty good job of keeping the peace in that country as we have managed to bring them to the brink of civil war. and dont forget abt iran. iraq used to watchdog iran, but now they cant. whats gonna happen there? how much has this "war" cost us in dollars? trillions and trillions. whats the price of lives to both sides? now were stuck there. bushie thought we would be in and out but hes "staying the course." has anyone figured out what that "course" is? the dems will fix it though....president h clinton and obama will take those trillions were spending on a useless "war" and feed, clothe, doctor, and finance illegals. why? because they will be voting soon enough. and theyll get al gore in to save the planet. and gay rights will come to the forefront. how wonderful. governments feel they have to regulate and control every facet of life....thats so they can then turn around and tax u! face it folks.....our political system is for sale to big business and special interest groups who can foot the bill to ensure whatever party's continued grasp of power. i find it disgusting. |
Re: Majority = Americans = They have spoken
From James Lileks:
Democrats ran on a two plank platform: not mentioning the taxes they would raise, and promising to lose the war faster than Bush. FWIW, Allen did the people of Virginia and the country an honorable favor by conceding to Webb.:crying: |

Yeah, can't wait for high and mighty Democrats. The one next in line to become chair of the ways and means committee wants to give tax cuts to latin americans and doesn't discriminate at all.
Pickering wants NY congressman to apologize for comment about Mississippi By By Emily Wagster Pettus The Associated Press JACKSON, Miss. ? A Democratic congressman from New York says he wasn?t trying to insult Mississippi in published remarks today, but a Republican colleague from Mississippi says Rep. Charles Rangel should apologize to the state. Rangel, D-N.Y., was quoted in an article today in The New York Times, saying: ?Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?? Rep. Chip Pickering, R-Miss., issued a news release criticizing Rangel?s words. ?I hope his remarks are not the kind of insults, slander, and defamation that Mississippians will come to expect from the Democrat leadership in Washington, D.C.,? Pickering said. Elbert Garcia, Rangel?s press secretary in New York, said Rangel had received calls Thursday about the Mississippi quote. Garcia e-mailed The Associated Press a response from Rangel: ?I certainly don?t mean to offend anyone, I just love New York so much that I can?t understand why everyone wouldn?t want to live here.? Rangel is the ranking Democrat on Ways and Means, and is in line to become chairman of the powerful tax-writing committee. The New York Times article was about how the New York congressional delegation gained political clout in the midterm elections. Rangel said, among other things, that he wants to direct more federal money to his state. U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., said he believes Mississippi will be treated fairly by Rangel and other Democratic leaders. As for Pickering?s question of whether Democrats could hurt the state, Taylor said: ?That?s Chip.? Pickering was elected to the House in 1996 and for the first time will be a member of the minority party in Congress. |

x2 ... that's why I like a good red and blue balance in government. They either work it out and find consensus or fight so much they can't pass as much crap into law. When either dems or reps dominate the government for too long, bad things happen. |
