Klaus can you update us on your progress with this install? I'm anxious....

Klaus 10-06-2004 09:28 PM

Yeah, I know... Drty and I are racing to see how slow we can do our projects (his bumper and my XM install).

I plan to do the install some time next week, so I should have some good news for everyone then.

BalanceMan 10-08-2004 06:17 PM

I bought the kit from gmpartsdirect.com. Everything installed with no problem.

It works properly through both the DVD/NAV system and the steering wheel controls. The song names and station names display on the NAV display and you get 12 presets on the radio, XM 1 and XM 2.

I used the XM antenna supplied with the kit and mounted it on the right side roof, symetrical with the Onstar antenna on the left side. Have seen it that way on other H2s. Had to pull down the headliner a little and drill 2 holes, but the antenna has a built in gasket that seals well on the flat surface. Total installation time was about 4 hours and it took me a while to figure out how to remove the sunvisor. Only modification to the kit i made was to cut off an extension on the reciever mounting bracket. All the other parts and connectors fit with no problem.

I just installed my XM Kit!

As BalanceMan said, works fine. More later...

Is there any reason to be concerned that the kit will not work with the 2004 6 disc CD Radio?

I bet it would work fine.

BalanceMan,
Exactly which part number(s) did you order? And exactly what was included in the kit?

Very nice picture Klaus. Looks great.

Drty,

I gave up on the idea of using the 2005 antenna, as the connectors are completely different. Therefore, I used the XM antenna in the GM Kit, drilling 5/8" and 3/16" holes in the roof to mount the antenna.

From GMPartsDirect:

GM PART # 12498768
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $397.14
OUR PRICE: $333.60
DESCRIPTION: Add on XM player for 2003-2004 trucks

Installing the antenna in the kit on 2003s with sunroofs may be a problem. 2004s and later should be a piece of cake, as the XM antenna can be installed where the AM/FM antenna is installed on the 2003s. The problem is with the reinforcing areas on the underside of the roof. It limits where the kit's antenna can be mounted. However, the antenna connector on the XM Tuner Module is standard, so a small stick-on aftermarket antenna could be used.

I took a bunch of pictures, and will work on an install doc in the next day or two.

Is it absolutely necessary to drill holes in the roof?

If you want to install the GM antenna - Yes. However, I believe you could use an aftermarket magnetic/stick-on antenna instead. I have not tested it, but I suspect you would just have to change the "sleeve" of the connector on the aftermarket antenna to plug it into the XM tuner.
