On engines with higher compression or FI engines, don't they detune/retard timing when they sense knock. Then that would mean less power on lower octane.

My gas mileage goes from 10.7 to 10.5 in the city switching from premium to regular. My vehicle is SC and requires higher octane. Can't say that I see a big difference in power. However it seems to start easier on premium when cold.

Has anyone else ever noticed that they alternate the positions of premium gas at the pumps?
On one pump it will be 87-89-92 then the other pump 92-89-87. The only reason I can figure is that they know people wanting 92 will purposely select 92 but that other people who don't care might just hit the left button(left is usually lower in most things in our society) and not notice until too late that it is the more expensive gas. |

you know, fellas, of all the places in the world it doesn't make sense to get called a tool of the oil companies, i think an H2 board might be at the top of the list. (forgot to add taht last night) ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline ethanol has 100,000 BTU's per gallon, gasoline 150,000. 10% ethanol in gas 145,000, or a bit more than 3% less, about in line with the price diff, and not far from my observed 5% diff in mileage. Same BTU's per dollar, seems reasonable to me. And finally, i'm nearly sure that what gas i opt to fill my truck won't cause you guys bodily harm, and i'm so sure of that that i'm willing to accept liability unconditionally. ;) |
