Since I'm loving the Jack Daniels so much, I had to try the other "Tennessee whiskey", George Dickels. This stuff is great!
So far, my favories, in order: (1) Jack Daniels, Black Label (yes, old regular #7) (2) Old Weller 107 (3) Jack Daniels Single Barrell. I will also give high honors to JW Blank, Crown Royal. Latest purchase: |
Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Would you please post a pic of that same bottle tonight around midnight? Thanks.:giggling:

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
This is a topic that has been at the center of discussion for years at every Scottish dinner that I have ever attended - I have sat in front of big open fires all over the highlands over the years bashing this one out.
There is no right or wrong - its your personal choice. But if I was to only drink one whiskey for the rest of my life it would have to be Balvenie 12 year old Doublewood - it goes down the throat like the Devil in velvet trousers. www.balvenie.com You cant go wrong with any of their products. And on the subject of gin - there is only one option for me - being a colossal gin drinker - Hendricks Gin - made in Scotland - it is a cucumber based gin - serve it with Schweppes (the ONLY tonic that belongs anywhere near gin) with a slice of cucumber - not lemon. Try it and get back to me - if you drink gin and have never drunk Hendricks then you are in for a treat. |
Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Andy - That's funny , I just opened a bottle of Balvenie, 15yr single barrel yesterday. My first time trying it, usually drink Talisker or Macallans. It was some fine whiskey. :D
I'm going to a tasting tonight where there will be some very high end whiskey's to chose from. Anybody have any recommendations? |

Pretty much all the higher end Speyside single malts are good - but look at the Islay single malts as well - Ardbeg 17 year old being a favourite of mine - a fine smokey peat flavour. |
Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
I just noticed - I have been in this country too long now - I have started spelling whisky with an e in it.

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Wow did I taste some fine whiskies last night and a few good armagnacs as well. The best whiskey I tried was a Benraich Curiositas very peated 10yr 92 proof. Very nice. Here's the website to the place their full whiskey menu is on the site. Next time you make it to NYC you should check it out. http://www.brandylibrary.com/sections2007/home.htm

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
I can't believe you guys haven't found the best whiskey yet.
Not CO, tho. Yarn fibers are probably messing with his senses. |

It takes years of extensive research, travelling, tasting and falling over. I think my problem is that I have probably tasted the nirvanna of whisky but unfortunately have no recollection of actually drinking it - thats the problem with tasting sessions - to be honest after the first couple its like feeding strawberries to donkeys - you have no idea what you are drinking. Ah well the research continues.:D :D |

Funny you should mention it. I've been knitting bottle socks for my Jack Daniels collection. |
Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
I drank Crown last night. Alot of it. Then I couldent sleep, and now I've hit the wall. This sucks.

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
I drank George Dickel and a little Beam Rye last night. Quite a contrast between rye & bourbon whiskey. I like both.
Actually......I'm liking the whiskey so much that I can hardly drink congac anymore unless is REALLY good XO stuff. |

Here's tonight's purchases on the way home from the airport. The best I can figure, I'm up to around $450 in whiskey purchases.
Andy inspired me to get the Balvenie 12 yr Doublewood. |

I also found this stuff in my old liquor stash in the kitchen. I believe I was gifted it in the late 90s. I looked it up on line and I think it's over $100/bottle. It was made in 1980, 18yr old.

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
I thought this was appropriate.
ALL GRANDPAS, HEED THIS WARNING: Do NOT lose your Grandkids in the Mall! My grandson got away from me Sunday at the mall. He approached a uniformed policeman and said, "I've lost my grandpa!" The cop asked, "What's he like?" The little boy hesitated for a moment and then replied, "Crown Royal whiskey and women with big tits. |

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
So I started the night with some good 'ol #7 JD. As usual, very sweet and good.
Then I moved on to the Balvenie 12 yr Doublewood. Not to shabby. However, I haven't developed the taste for Scotch yet. I'm partial to Bourbon & Tennesse whiskey at this point. Next was some Jameson, my first real attentive approach to Irish whiskey. I gotta say......I LIKED it, alot. I'm gonna have to pursue the Irish a bit more. I'm finishing the evening by downing the last of my Wild Turkey 101 (not the Rye in the picture). I'm just not sold on WT. I can't get the idea of it tasting like medicine out of my head. |

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
I dedicated the weekend to Scotch and Irish Whiskey. In a few short days I've been able to gain a much greater appreciation for good scotch. I definitely like the Balvenie Doublewood. Andy C - great recommendation.
Irish Whiskey, with it's triple distillation process, is really smooth and enjoyable. But I know I've really only scratched the surface with generic brands like Jameson and Tullamore Dew. More to come on that. |
Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Beer is always good.:excited:

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Tonight, it's time for a little Dickel. Don't get me confused with Adam. I'm talking about the whiskey here.

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Tonight's early selection was a Glenlivet 12 yr Scotch at dinner. It went well with Sushi.
Now, I'm trying to finish off a small bottle of Early Times I bought last week. I've certainly had better bourbon than this. But, you can't win everytime and I will do my duty to drink it to the dregs. :D |
Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Good move. Stay away from the Early Times.
Thompsons is what burned me out on whiskey. The bar across the street had Makers, JD, and Thompsons. By the time I started venturing over that way I had already burned myself out on JD, so that was out of the equation. Makers was only served straight up, thats all fine and well but when I'm trying to get drunk its not possible to drink that much whiskey straight up. Also, you were not allowed to shoot Makers. That left Thompsons.... I have alot of vague remberences' of nights while drinking that stuff like it was going out of style. I lost it one time too many, ever since whiskey has just not been the same. :crying: I'm hoping that one day my gag reflex will go away, I tried to force myself through it by drinking more whiskey. That was a very bad idea. |

Ah Bushmills and Glenlivet - both admirable choices. My quest for the perfect Whisky is on hold for the time being - I am sitting here in Frankfurt airport - probably one of the most dismal in the bloody world by the way - with six hours to kill - heading back to sunny Kazakstahn where the weather is a balmy -20C at the moment - lovely - back to drinking vodka that can make you go blind just smelling it.:crying: |
