Newest Pictures of my H2.
Got a new Roof Rack, hadn't put the tire up top when the pictures were taken. The Roof Rack is a 3 piece design with spots to mount up to 6" lights in the front, and some Fogs in the Rear. The rack has a spot to mount your spare tire as well. The Sun Roof Insert is removable for those with a sun roof. These pictures are also the first I've taken since I got my winch installed. Everything is coming together nicely! The Rack, as well as the Front and Rear bumpers are made by an Off Road Shop here in Texas called Tough Country. http://www.toughcountry.com/ ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |

That's the rack that is copied from GOBI's design, only upside down. They didn't have any in the booth at SEMA, I guess out of fear of being caught.
No surprise you've got one. Adam P. Smith Mortgage Pros, Inc. 303-407-2405 p 303-407-2414 f aps101374@yahoo.com |
Actually these racks have been around longer than the Gobi ones have. Go figure.
But then again, I guess it's not too tough to copy a rectangle, huh? ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |
Detonate, that`s comming along nicely.
![]() What`s the next step? Tires or lift? |
Things on the checklist:
Lift + 38" Tires (Has to be done all at once) Paint Front Grill Black out Lights (Maybe) Replace Nerf Bars with heavier extendead Rock Rails Then we'll see. Muahahahahaha! ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |
DETONATE:I would like to have our lawyers prove to your lawyers who came up with the GOBI Rack and ladder first. I take it you have upside down pants also? What's next are you going to name it IBOG?
![]() [This message was edited by Sandra on 12-01-03 at 06:12 PM.] |
This is a Gobi with Tire Carrier and Sun Roof Opening.
![]() There is virtually no usable space on the top of that rack. On the Tough Country rack you can take the tire down, put in the sun roof insert and have the entire rack space usable for storage. Or you can put your tire on top, take off the sun roof insert and cruise town. The Rack is also sectionable so you can slide the front piece all the way forward, and the back piece all the way back for storing longer items. You may think that bending a pipe to make room for some lights is some super secret patentable idea, but I don't. I just want a heavy duty rack that will suit my needs, and the TC rack is just better than the Gobi, hands down. ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |
Do I smell a fight?
|
Not from me. I don't own Tough Country. :P
Besides. I think the forum members here are smart enough to realize that there are only so many ways to put a rectangle on top of a rectangular vehicle. ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |

LOL. What a joke.
Let me guess, if the pipe didn't have the bend for the lights it would be a copy of a Wilderness rack right? I am not the one driving your vehicle. I really never say much on this site but after a year on having you make false statements such as "TC was the first to design the Rack and ladder" I think its time to set the record clear. Members on the site are respected business owners as well and understand that false statements from you are just gasps of air that don't sever a purpose. I will loose no more time on this matter.

I like that rack man, what does one of those cost? I think they look better than the others, personally... |
I hate to say it, but I think i am with Detonate on this one. I have seen a GOBI rack in person, and although they have their similarities, which has to be expected when making a like product for the same vehicle, they definitely have some differences too. If that wasn't allowed than 1 company would have a Monopoly on the market, and that is against the law (atleast in theroy).
|
So are you trying to tell me that nobody had ever made a roof rack before you?
Nobody had ever designed a ladder before you? This is some magical new concept that was invented by Gobi the same time the Hummer H2 came out? Or is it possible that people have been making racks and ladders for various makes on models of vehicles for years, and years. Even before *GASP* Gobi? And is it also possible that products were planned for the Hummer H2 even before it was released to the public? Maybe yours was the first sold. I don't know. That's never what I was saying. I'm saying that TC has been making Racks, Ladders, Front Ends, Rear Bumpers, and tons of other Off Road parts for not just many years, but generations in their family. They didn't have an H2 in El Campo Texas the day they rolled off the lot. They had to borrow one from a guy named Mark at Star Customs in Austin. 6 weeks after they got their first H2, they had a concept done. And until you made a big stinky on the forum after Texas Truck and SUV show, the family owned business of Tough Country had never heard of the arrogance of a new company named GOBI. ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |
This little exchange got me interested in the point me discussed, so I headed over to the Gobi Racks Website.
Amazingly enough it looks as though they have done little to protect any sort of trademark or design of their own besides having their logo registered. Gobi looks to make a fine product that many people would be happy with but I have to side with Detonate in that a metal framed square with a single raised end would be hard to argue as being intellectual property. I would like to think that the Gobi lawyers will one day see this thread and the only thing they will have to say is, "Sandra, be quiet." ![]() ________________________ Black 2003 H2 - Just like most of yours, just possibly with less crap bolted on. Why is it so tall? It kind of looks like a double decker. Is there two levels to that rack? It's hard to tell in the pics but maybe you can store cargo underneath. Can you buy additional levels? What is the maximum number of levels, maybe 6? It's probably best to put the heavy cargo on level 1 and the light stuff (like marshmallows) on level 6. Do you think this is a good idea with a 4" lift or will this baby tilt over in a stiff wind?

It clears the Factory Roof Bars if you have them. I do not.

It looks kind of like one of those racks that would be up on an elephant for a safari. Are you going on safari?
|
I really like the tough country stuff! Being from Texas, everything is a little bigger than most. I happen to like the higher sidewalls on the roof rack.
I am currently designing my own roof rack, and plan to incorporate the best of everyones designs. Is that breaking the rules? I guess we wouldn't be driving the awesome vehicles that we do, if the best ideas of different makers weren't incorporated into one. Can't we all just get along!? Ric |
Hey, with how deep all the BS is getting around here, ya need a rack up top just to get up high enough to save your watch .......

How come the guy in the bumper dumper pic didn't pull his long johns down? Is he pooping in his underwear? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the bumper dumper?
I think the dumper on top is a bad idea. It is obvious detonate is about ready to roll the truck in to the water. I'll bet as soon as he leans over to wipe it rolls but only because of the lift he installed. Maybe the brush guard that is 4x too big for the truck will keep it down but with that roof rack that's 6x too big it's hard to say. Does Tuff Country make a new 8 headlight setup too like the family truckster? I think soon your trucks going to look like this: |
Ah, that explains why the directions from the west coast to Texas are "Head east 'till ya smell ****, turn right and when your stepping in it your in Texas ....."

Mine did until I moved it back a little. I now have the spare tire up on my rack but you can not hear it at all. RIC-H2 I designed and built the rack on my H2. Here are some pictures of it. I do CNC machining, if anyone is interested in a set of Billet aluminum feet for a custom rack let me know. Eight of them would be about $500 with a clear coat. Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Cheers |
Sweet!
The rack doesn't make any extra noise that I've noticed. When they put it on they warned that some people had mentioned a little Hum, but by sliding the rack back an Inch at a time till it went away solves the problem. ------------------------------ 2003 Red H2 equipped with Tough Country Heavy Duty Armor Series Front End with Winch, Rear Bumper, Brush Guard, and Roof Rack. |

How is the roof rack connected to the billet feet? I can't see how it locks down the roof rack. Thanks. -HUMMERDOGG TROLL POACHER (I hunt trolls even if it ain't troll hunting season...) TROLL TAXIDERMIST (For those of you who get to them before I can. I provide this service free of charge...) |
Nice mounts...
I'm not sure if I can justify spending $500 for some billet, when I can weld up some metals ones for about 20 bucks. Not to say they don't look really nice! How is the rack actually mounted to the billet pieces? Are there mounting screws that go into the billet pieces? It's OK if you don't answer(Confidential), I was just thinking out loud! Thanks for the offer. Ric |
There are 1/4-20 thread inserts put into the bottom of the steel tubing. The crimp kind, see the Thread Setter on eastwoodcompany.com. The aluminum is counter bored from the bottom for SS cap head screws.
There are other ways to connect the feet. You could weld on a flange and just bolt through it into the aluminum. That is how many of the rack companies connect there feet. Cheers |
