I couldn't stand it any longer. I had to try these new Toyo MTs. As most of you know I'm a bit of a tire packrat. I've got a set of brand new stock BFG ATs on stock wheels, a set of 37x12.50x17 Iroks on black stock wheels, a set of siped stock BFG ATs w/o wheels and a set of 37x12.50x17 MTRs on black wheels. The MTRs were getting down to the 50-60% tread range so I figured it was time to try some new tires(in anticipation of the next Moab trip). I've been hearing great reviews on the Toyos so I called up my local Les Schwab store and ordered a set.

I was surprised to see that the 35" Toyo was as tall as(if not slightly taller)the 37" GY MTR. The Toyo also looks wider because of the tread design and sturdier outer lugs. The Toyos look more aggressive than the MTRs, but ride as quietly as the stock BFG ATs. Directional stability is much improved over the 37" Iroks and a bit better than the MTRs.

I took the following pictures to show the flex of an aired down Toyo MT vs a GY MTR. Both were aired down to 15.5psi.

Take into consideration that the MTRs have been used quite a bit and the Toyos are brand new.

When I get around to it I'll show the Iroks, too.

H2Finally 07-28-2005 04:37 AM

Oh great! Just great! Wanna bet those pics makin the Jeepforum rounds asap -- "Look! H2 offroading... on a curb!!"

J/K! Great comparo. You sure they're same size? The Toyos quieter though huh?... hmm... anyone need a set of BRAND NEW MTRs???

DRTYFN 07-28-2005 04:40 AM

They're VERY quiet. I'll be off-roading in the next couple of days to try them out. Stay tuned for the review.

rodster 07-28-2005 04:46 AM

Looks good! Dang, just when I thought I'd made up my mind about the IROKs you go and get these.

Why 35s and not 37s? How tall are the Toyos compared to the IROKs?

I'll check tomorrow. But the Iroks are super tall.
I went with the 35's because the 37's only come in a 13.50 width and those would rub like Oprah's thighs rushing to a buffet.

rodster 07-28-2005 04:57 AM

Think I just answered one of my own questions. Looking at Toyo's website it doesn't look like the 37s will fit a stock 17 rim?

Those are the 35 Toyos? Looks bigger than that! Great setup!

I'm getting a set. They got mine stuck in port. Truckers strike.

Drty, anymore updates?

I got to test the MTRs yesterday at Aqua Dulce (Bouquet Canyon). Lots of nice climbs. I aired down to 20, but not liking the traction I get at all.

The last climb, also the steepest, I can't make it over the top ledge. Backed down, and since the temp outside was 110, I checked my tires, and sure enough, it was at 24.5

I lowered to 20 again (tire air was so hot, I got to use a longer stick to air-out cause it was burning my fingers!!) and finally made it over.

I thought the MTRs supposed to be "tougher" than the stock ATs? But after just 1 run, I've got plenty of rock rashes/gouges.

What's your preference in pounds for running on sandy rocks with the MTRs? I need to learn more abt the MTRs 'cause NOT happy at all for now..

Thinking I should have gotten the 37" ATs instead.

DRTYFN 08-01-2005 01:53 AM

Depending on the terrain any where from 18 down to 12. !2 is for maximum traction and I usually air back up 3-4psi.
You'll like the 37" ATs. I spoke with a guy that had them and he liked them.

(As you can see I've been procrastinating on getting an Irok off the stack to measure. I'll get to it... eventually.)

Christa 08-01-2005 07:02 PM

Those Toyos look very nice on your rig.(even if there is not one bit of pretty shiny chrome to be seen ) I have the same tires except mine are the 37's. Mine don't rub, but I dont do the wheeling that you do. The toyos are very quiet, ride smooth and give the truck a nice stance. You'll love them. They look mean!
Why so many sets of tires? Are you a fickle bitch or do you use different tires for different terrain or weather?

DRTYFN 08-01-2005 07:10 PM

I'm a tire pack rat and I like variety.

DH22G 08-01-2005 10:00 PM

drty THAT LOOKS SICK MAN.. i know those toyos are awesome tires. let me know how they are offroad.. i saw a lifted silverado hd in BIGBEAR this weekend and it was a toyo mt 40 /13.5/22 . I was about to shoot fireworks in my pants it looked so amazing... still waiting for mine over here ,,,

Rodster,

I have the Toyo 37's on stock rims. Love the result. Minor rubbing in front resolved when I put on the Fabtech HD steering components.
Also had one air bag sensor connecting rod get broken by the tire on the right rear..

Overall VERY glad I went with the 37x13.5x17's

Thanks, Jerry. That's all good news. I have the Fabtech steering components sitting here in boxes and plan to have those installed when the tires and wheels go on.

The big challenge right now is the tires -- nobody I've talked to has Toyos. Any tips on that?

I'm leaning toward American Racing Mojave Teflons 18x9.5 with Toyo M/Ts 37x13.50x18. Anyone have thoughts on that combo?

If I can't get the Toyos soon then I may very well go with the same size tire in the Nitto MG. Then, when the Toyos are finally available, if the Nitto noise is making me nuts, buy the Toyos.

Thanks again -- Rod

KenP 08-02-2005 05:40 PM

The MG's will be loud. I have the TG's and they're louder than stock, but not so bad.

drmiles 08-02-2005 06:32 PM

Rodster

if you go with the 9.5 rims it WILL rub on the inner fender and front stabilizer bar. I was able to put the 13.5 tires on only because I kept the stock 8" rims with the factory off set. Do not try this with after market rims. Unless your never going off raod!!!

The rims I'm looking at have 4 1/4" backspace. Does that change things?

drmiles 08-02-2005 07:49 PM

Yes it will rub with the 4.5" offset, the only way you can get 37 x 13.5 tires to fit is to use the factory wheels. I'm sure the offset on factory wheel is less than that.

Hmmm. I'm talking 4 1/4" backspace. You, 4.5" offset. Are we on the same frequency?

Also, this thread says the factory backspace is 5.5".

Yup, it's official, I'm confused.

Sorry I was working and trying to answer you at the same time.

I didn't know the factory backspacing

If 5.5 is correct and you switch to 4.25 instead of the usual 4.5 that would bring the tire in closer to the frame a 1/4", probably still rub with the 13.5 tires.

Also every Hummer is a little different some rub more than others with the 37 x 12.5 tire and 4.5 spacing. 4.25 would help that.

I guess you just have to go to the tire store and test fit...

Good Luck

Dallion 08-04-2005 02:10 AM

Anyone know how the Toyo MT's handle in the snow? I am thinking of going with the 37x13.50's... But wondering if I should keep the stock A/T's for the winter time, or if these would be good to leave on.

DH22G 08-04-2005 03:11 AM

i have heard that they are awesome compared to the stock ats. because they are so soft.. toyo has been a sponsor of my other rides for a long time and they are usually pretty honest with me

I've had these on my wife's H2 for some time now and she loves them. No need to air them down going over the Bellevue Mall speed bumps!

dochummer 08-08-2005 02:54 PM

Was there a final word on off-road performance? How do they do in soft dirt? We have an abundance out here...

If they're about the same noise level on the highway as stock, I think i've found me next tires....

DRTYFN 08-08-2005 04:22 PM

Doc,
I ran out to Brown's Camp last week and tried them out on Hog's Back. Usually I need to reposition once when going up HB, but with the Toyos I walked right up and never even slipped a tire.

That looks sweet drmiles! If the rubbing is minimal, I may go that route when its time to buy.
