Good luck to all. This type of cutting was all too common in Silicon Valley during the last 5 or 6 years.

Good to hear. Any word from the rest?

Ma\'Deuce 03-28-2006 06:37 PM

My dad and I made it through the day without gettin tapped on the shoulder(fired). hope i'm lucky again tomorrow. I saw a co-worker being escorted out and heard of a few more that were asked to leave. Some were friends . I hope they do ok. this really sucks.

HummerNewbie 03-28-2006 07:12 PM

That really does suck but glad to hear you and your dad made it out ok. Any sign of fstop yet?

Ipedog 03-28-2006 07:49 PM

Damn, this really bites. I feel for all you guys, let go or not.

Best of luck to all of you.

Still a GM worker, but we were informed today, our group will be targeted later in the month of April.
I'm at the point in my life, it would not bother me too much. I just wish they would get it all over with as soon as possible.
I'm planning on getting out in two or three years anyway, so if they gave me a 15 month severance package, I guess I could not complain too much. Hell, they already f'ed up my pension.

bparker 03-28-2006 09:15 PM

Glad to hear. Take care of yourself.

HummerNewbie 03-28-2006 09:35 PM

Glad to hear you are still there fstop but sure wish they would let you know what the hell is going to happen. Does being within a year or two from leaving anyway make you more likely to be offered the package to leave? That is what they are doing right, offering a lump sum to walk away?

Glad your still around. Good luck in the weeks to come.

The same thing happened to me when So Cal Edison deregulated. Lots of layoffs and people asked to leave. Funny thing, they kept me long enough to re-train the the older guys they brought down to do my job and let me go a few days before I would be entilted to any sort of retirement. Then they had the balls to ask me to come back 2 years later. Not too cool. Anyway, hope all goes well for you guys involved.

No lump sum to walk away, no packages, straight firing is what they are doing to cut the salary workforce.
They will give a person one month severance for each year worked, up to a maximum of 15 months, for 15 years or greater service. The severance does include health insurance, as it exists when let go. Does not include anymore contributions to the retirement, but GM's contributions are cut way down to any retirement as of Jan. 1 of next year.
In some ways I feel I won't be cut this year, or next, but the following year I will be, and if it is in 08 when they let me go, that would be ideal.
However, one thing I have learned, no matter how critical your job is, you can be let go at any time, so I do not feel secure until all the heads are cut this year.
Hell, I'm 58, worked for GM for 15 years now, and I have a small retirement from a little over 15 years with the Federal Government, so I won't be hurting too bad.
However, if I do get cut, I won't have access to GM's service manual anymore , so won't be able to help anyone out in that regard.
Time will tell, I just wish they would get it all over with ASAP, and let all of us get on with our lives.

Good luck to you too. I was over at the Tech Center today and drove around the VEC. Saw the TV crews sitting on Van Dyke. I don't work at the Tech Center so maybe they will forget about me.

DarthKarl 03-28-2006 11:52 PM

I'm glad to hear that you guys at least made it safely through Black Tuesday.

When life deals you lemons, make lemonade. I went through a corporate downsizing in 2001 with a communications company. Out of the blue, called to a meeting in the morning and given a severance package. Security guards watched each employee as they packed up and escorted them out the building. Totally unexpected and blew me away.

The GOOD news is 5 years later I have the job of my dreams . . . there's no looking back.

Hope y'all don't have to go through what I did, but just know that there's life after layoff. You're in my thoughts and prayers, folks.

nmikes 03-29-2006 02:52 AM

Yeah, hang in there and keep your head down... I was with AT&T Wireless when it was bought out by cingular... they let me go. It was a couple years of hard times, but I'm so much better off now than I was then. Similar to when I left the military... I think for the most part if you do get let go, for the majority of folks... if they want it bad enough, they'll be better off in the long run... just takes alot of work and a certain amount of guts. This is the greatest country in the world... there isn't anything anyone can't do if they are willing to work for it.

NOOOOooooooooo!!!!!

Glad to hear you made it through.

Ma\'Deuce 03-29-2006 10:09 AM

Wow! thanks for the thoughts, prayers and inspirational stories. I like my job, and would like to keep it, but if it goes down hill i'm going to look for something a little less stressfull. Like Full Time elcova Hummer forum padder . maybe not as lucrative(sp?), but atleast i wouldn't get fired.
thanks again.

I don't know, JASON is now a TASK MASTER

"Now I ask some assistance from you:
Please refrain from the unnecessary PAD posting. It is a waste of time for everyone. Further, if it is that important to you to have more "karma" points, ask me for them. All requests will be considered."

BEST OF LUCK GUYS & GIRLS !!!
