OK guys I am looking for some sand dunes to go wheelin on in NC or somewhere close by on the East Coast. I've googled this one quite a bit, but come up with nothing everytime. I very seriously doubt NC has any dunes that you can legally wheel on...never heard of or seen any. Just got the fever for dunes for some reason and can't find any. Any and all help is appreciated.

HIHUMMER 10-10-2005 04:27 PM

You and I need to talk!!! I've been going crazy looking for somewhere and someone to go off road with!! I use to go to Onslow County, but they won't let civilians on the beach anymore.

alldunn 10-10-2005 05:55 PM

Definitely...there are plenty of sandy beaches here in NC that you can wheel on and I have been on most of them, but none have dunes. I was looking at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Mears, MI, but that's a heck of a drive just to go dune wheelin. I have a buddy that has a 4 runner that would probably go also if we can find somewhere to go. Him and I have been to the Uwharrie National Forest several times in NC which is mostly wooded trails and a little tight for my H2 (i.e. scratches to h3ll ). If you can find something, definitely let me know. I am sure I can find a few people that would be willing to go including myself.

HIHUMMER 10-11-2005 02:58 PM

What beaches in NC have you gone on?
I recently joined the Southeastern Hummer Club (as the 1st H3 member..yoohoo), simply to try to link up with others and find places to go. They went up to Greenville a couple weeks ago...but I was unable to make it.
I will keep a look out and keep ya posted.
I'm assuming your heart not set just on dunes?

alldunn 10-11-2005 06:22 PM

I've been to about every beach access on the outer banks. Fort Fisher has a nice beach access that we go out on regularly. I have been on trails recently and just normal beach wheelin. I'm just on this kick for some reason to go dune wheelin.

HIHUMMER 10-12-2005 10:39 AM

Well..you've done more that I have. Maybe one weekend we could meet up.

alldunn 10-12-2005 06:06 PM

Yea definitely. I am building a new house and it is almost done. I will probably be tied up with that stuff for the next month or so, but after that, I'm ready to go.

HIHUMMER 10-13-2005 11:07 AM

Just PM me when your ready! And congrats on your house!

alldunn 10-13-2005 12:25 PM

Will do and thanks!

Mike B 10-16-2005 12:41 AM

I know about Fort Fisher (Wilmington) beach riding too. I know that you can ride on the beach in Kill Devil Hills and they have some large dunes for "dune boarding". I'm in NC too contact me too if you go wheeling your H3.

alldunn 10-16-2005 01:23 AM

I actually have an H2, but either way...The dunes in KDH are strictly off limits. That's Jockey's Ridge you are talking about I think. Would be really cool to hit that up. I am sort of thinking of going to Fort Fisher to do a little wheelin maybe two weekends from this one. I would like to go at night. Maybe go during the day and then again that night. I really want to try out my lights since I've put them on. Haven't had a chance to do that yet. What part of NC are you in? I really wasn't going to go until later in the year, but I am dying to get back on the beach. It's so much fun. If you or HIHUMMER are interested in possibly going PM me and maybe we can work something out.

Mike B 10-16-2005 11:37 PM

I realized you had an H2 after I had posted. Hope you wouldn't mind an H3 (econobox) tagging along--may be interesting to see if I could keep up with you. I'm in the Raleigh area (Clayton).

alldunn 10-17-2005 12:35 AM

NO definitely not. I would love to see how the H3 does. Haven't had a chance to see one in action. Not sure how much wheelin you are into, but if you want to do some trails, let me know and we can hit up Uwharrie National Forest sometime.

KenP 10-17-2005 04:14 PM

Undeveloped neighborhoods north of Carova. The "roads" might as well be dunes.

alldunn 10-17-2005 04:26 PM

What's the d@mn deal? Why is it so hard to find some decent dunes? You don't have any up there in VA Ken?

Mike B 10-21-2005 11:49 PM

Let me know when. Most likely in November after my 9 year old son finishes football season (October 29).

HIHUMMER 10-22-2005 01:27 AM

Just caught up the post....I'm in. Just let me know when/where!
Mike...I use to live in Zebulon!!!

h2co-pilot 10-22-2005 10:14 AM

Alldunn, you shouldn't be riding on dunes anyway. They are vital to the eco-system and have little animals in them ect... But the roads in Carova, NC like Ken said are/were fun, but I haven't been there since my parents sold the beach house.

Dunes kinda suck anyway, you should go to Paragon next time or Uwharrie (Baden Lake) NE of Ablemarle has some trails or head to Tellico near Murphy.

CP, that's why I am looking for "legal" dunes. If I didn't care and wanted to go to jail I would hit up Jockey's Ridge. I have been to Uwharrie several times. The picture below is at Uwharrie. The trails are just too tight for the H2 though. I usually just ride along with a buddy of mine in his 4-Runner. When are you guys going to Paragon next? I may try to make that one.

I will keep you guys posted on the when/where. They are very very close on finishing our house, so I may be tied up with moving and whatnot for the next few weeks.

Ted 10-24-2005 12:21 AM

If you want Legal sand dunes you need to head up to MI.

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7...4760--,00.html

Or take a trip to Beaver State Park ATV/ORV Area in OK.

If you really want sand, take a road trip out West.

alldunn 10-24-2005 12:36 PM

I've heard about Silver Lake. I guess I will just have to head up there soon because it's obvious that there isn't any dune wheeling around here. I may try to plan a trip sometime next year up there. Thanks for the info Ted.

Mr. I - Man 10-24-2005 03:03 PM

Oct 31 ist last day of the season to wheel there!!

h2co-pilot 10-25-2005 01:37 AM

Better hurry!

I'd love to take a trip up to MI. My truck is set up that kind of running.

alldunn 10-28-2005 12:04 AM

Well when I get ready to go, I'll try to get a bunch of you guys to go with me. I definitely don't want to go alone. I will keep you guys posted.

Sorry HI. I just considered you "one of the guys." Both you and I-Man are more than welcome to come.

Yea maybe so if it's going to be on the 19th. Let me know what type of terrain and where. You can PM me if you need to.

Mike B 11-09-2005 01:54 PM

Yes, the 19th, not the 18th. I'll let you know about terrain by next week.

KenP 11-09-2005 06:59 PM

Make sure you take pics and post them. We'd love to come down and wheel with you guys.

alldunn 11-09-2005 07:39 PM

Well hell Ken come on. You're not that far away. I'm not the one heading this up, but i'm sure Mike wouldn't mind.

HIHUMMER 11-10-2005 12:51 PM

The more the merrier!

Forgot you guys were in VA..right?

KenP 11-10-2005 03:13 PM

We won't make this trip. But we're always up for get togethers.

HH, yes. Virginia Beach.

Mike B 11-15-2005 11:12 AM

I can't find anywhere to go in this area that would be even remotely challenging.

We may need to schedule a big get-together for another weekend. Suggestions for NC would be Tellico (Western NC-Tenn), Croatan National Forest (near Morehead City) or Uwharrie (not good for H2s trails are too tight). If there's any good place in Virginia or SC, I'm up for it.

Mike

alldunn 11-15-2005 11:26 AM

I'm ready anytime. The only one I have been to out of the three you mentioned is Uwharrie and yes it is way too tight in places for the H2. I know about Tellico and hear it's pretty crazy, but what's Croatan all about? Haven't heard about that one. Keep me posted.
