HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

Okay...let the story of my drama H3 continue....

Started driving home Tuesday from Paragon. Got the speed up to around 60mpg and there was a gawd awful noise and vibration. Called my local dealer who informed me to contact Onstar to find the nearest Hummer dealership....which ended up being in Allentown PA...an hour east of where I was. So....head to Scott Hummer in Allentown. They pull my truck in thinking perhaps the problem was a U-Joint or a Wheel Bearing.

First thing they do is rotate and balance my tires..."just to rule out".
Of course...that didn't fix the problem. So about 4hours later they tell me....are you ready for this....MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL "was shot". (keep in mind I just had the front replaced 3 weeks ago and from that, I now have a front axle seal leak that was to be corrected).

The Service Manager at Scott Hummer tells me that they have replace about 4 early build date H3's rear diff. GM has told them that "they have found a containment/chemical of some kind in the differential housing that cause the breakdown of the internal parts. No point in replacing the internal parts, b/c the breakdown will happen again. So instead we have to replace the whole differential...meaning completely everything except the wheels. This will take about 7days". (just glad it didn't have anything to do with my "sassy wheeling skills". ;) )

Thanks so much to HiMobility and his family for opening up their home and allowing a "slummer" to stay there. :p :D

So....left my poor H3 in Allentown, PA...with hopes that it will be shipped to my local dealer in about 1 week. I've contact Hummer and my "case" has been escalated beyond customer service to a "case manager". Time to play hard ball. :mad:

I just got home tonight around 6ish. 10hour drive is never too much fun.

BEWARE those with the early build dates.....your break down of the rear diff. maybe be happening soon.:(

hey hi , sounds like yours had the flashing compound issue . no rear end howl up to this point for you ? i think most occured with lower mileage . F5 can fill you in much better than i can about this issue :cool: sorry to hear of your misfortune , they will get you back together and it will be better than new . welcome to the early build club . :p you , bebe , sewie , and i , plus a few others ;)

maybe you T&Aers just wheel to hard :eek: :D

Sorry to hear about your baby. Makes me wish I had paid more attention to when mine was built. Though I'm pretty sure it was early this year.

Goldilocks:
Your H3 diffs are too small;
Hi-Mo's fire-breathing brakeless H1 is too big;
Time to try the one that's just right - H2 ;)
Brakes; diffs, they've got it all (excepting the tie rods).:D

Just kidding.:D

Sorry about the road-trip difficulties Hi. I bet he was tired. However, isn't this the perfect opportunity to get a locking rear diff for the Sass-mobile???

Sorry to hear about that Hi-Honey. What a bummer. It is going to be covered under warranty, right???

does this mean we're not wheeling, like soon??? *tear*

Re: HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

AAM produced some axles, prior to Aug. '05 that had lapping compound left on the gearset. Usually, within 3-5K miles, the axle would be too loud to be drowned out by a Monsoon system. :D Some happened with earlier mileage, some after 5K; depending on the amount of lapping compound.
As the gearset wears, it can cause some vibration problems.
AAM foots the bill for this repair, which is a quick swap of the axle. Easy diagnosis, pull the cover and see if there is sandy substance floating in the lube.
I would have thought most are replaced, but evidently there are a few out there that are still with low mileage or with small amounts of compound.

Re: HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

FYI on the mileage...don't get past 3-5k and think you are okay. My front diff. went out around 19k and I'm at 21k now w/ the rear. Yes....I drive...a lot....:)

Hi-Mo is Hi-Mobility. Had a little brake problem on the H1. He's the best trail guide in the Western Hemisphere.

You're saying you were able to go 21K with the lapping compound problem?:eek:
Oh, and the reason they are replacing the entire diff is that is the only way it is serviced at this time, AAM/GM does not service the gearset. But I'm confused as to why they would also service the drive axles.

Yup F5, that's what I'm saying...:p

I talked w/ my service manager at my local dealer and he said that there are several new bullentins out on the H3...from things like the water leaking in from the sunroof to battery drain to the transfer case.....:mad:

Hummer had told me that they are looking into if this would be a severe enough case to give me another H3. Got to get the appropriate hands in the pot first.

Oh yea...their little 24hour response time isn't completely accurate either.:mad:

Thanks to Hi-MO and his wife for calling and bustin my chops over how lonely my little H3 looks in the parking lot of the dealer...off to the side all by itself. :(

Re: HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

GM had a similar problem on the vettes(not mine).The rear ends were made with a pourous material and the fluid in the rears would slowly leak out through the metal.Haven't had a problem with my H3 as of yet!!!!

There are no bulletins for sunroof leaks, there is a new bulletin just issued in regard to the rattle, and that is a quick easy fix. I can find some service manual update bulletins, but that does not mean there is a problem, that means the original procedure was incorrect, and the techs were having problems repairing items.
There is some preliminary information posted on the T/case, as well as the very early fill procedure check.
Only thing I see about batteries is the covers are now released for service, and to make sure you confirm the battery is dead before replacement under warranty.
Theses are all checks done on the GM-Dealerworld site, that is updated DAILY by GM with all bulletins, preliminary info notices and service procedures. So, I'm not too sure where your service manager is obtaining his information.
Sorry to hear about all the trouble you have had with your H3, and I'm just pointing out the reason they are installing your entire new diff, and would question why they have to install shafts, unless the splines were destroyed, and if they were, then the shafts do need replacement.
Hopefully Hummer will work something out with you.
Good luck....
